In November, Hsin Chong Chairman and CEO Wilfred Wong received the degree of

Doctor of Humanities honoris causa from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and

gave a well-received public lecture.

The honorary doctoral degree was awarded on 25 November at HKBU’s 54th

commencement ceremony. Dr. Wong was recognised for his outstanding professional

achievements as well as his remarkable contributions to society.

Dr. Wong was described as a business and political leader dedicated to serving the

community. In addition to leading Hsin Chong, he is the Chairman of Synergis Holdings

Limited, the Chairman of Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the Chairman of Standing

Commission on Civil Service Salaries and Conditions of Service, and the Chairman of The

Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Limited, among other positions.

On 18 November, Dr. Wong delivered a public lecture as part of HKBU’s ‘Brilliance of

Civilisation’ series featuring the school’s honorary degree recipients. Titled ‘Connect to

Win,’ Dr. Wong’s remarks drew upon his decades of diverse professional experiences.

He spoke on the importance of building strong interpersonal relationships.

Dr. Wong rephrased former U.S. President

John F. Kennedy’s famous phrase when

advising the HKBU lecture attendees: “Ask

not what others can do for you. Ask what

you can do for others.” Specifically, Dr. Wong

emphasised that, when we treat others with

sincere and good motivation, good things can

happen to us in return.

The highly engaging lecture was delivered

before an audience which included several

of Dr. Wong’s family members and Hsin

Chong management.

25日舉行的香港浸會大學第五十四屆畢業

典禮上，獲頒授榮譽人文學博士學位，以

獻。他於同月在香港浸會大學主持公開講

座，深受歡迎。

王英偉致力促進商業及政界發展，對社

會服務不遺餘力。除了擔任新昌營造集

團主席兼行政總裁外，他同時出任新昌

管理集團主席，以及香港藝術發展局主

席、公務員薪俸及服務條件常務委員會

主席、香港國際電影節協會有限公司主

席等職務。

為慶祝頒授榮譽博士，香港浸會大學於

11月18日舉辦「文明的光輝」活動，王

博士負責主持其中一個公開講座。他以

「人脈網絡　致勝之道」為題，分享數

十年來在不同範疇的專業經驗，並指出

建立強大人際關係網絡的重要性。

王英偉在講座中修改了前美國總統約

翰‧甘迺迪的名言：「不要問別人可以

為你做什麼，要問自己可以為別人做什

麼。」他特別強調要以真誠待人，好事

自然來。

當日，王英偉的親友及新昌管理層亦到

場支持這次富有意義的講座。

Hsin Chong has won new contracts from the Housing Authority (HA) for two public rental housing development projects at Tung Chung and Yuen Long.

One project involves the construction of four domestic buildings ranging from 38 to 41 storeys at Tung Chung Area 56 with government, social welfare, kindergarten and retail facilities. Upon completion, the project will provide 3,580 residential flats.

The Yuen Long project entails one 20-storey and two 16-storey domestic buildings with a car park and single-storey retail block at ex-Au Tau Departmental Headquarters. Upon completion, the project will provide a total of 1,203 residential flats.

Building Environmental Assessment Methods (BEAM) are to be used throughout both projects.

On 15 November, a Finnish delegation comprising business elite from the construction, machinery, building and city planning industries visited Hsin Chong. Directors from a number of Hsin Chong businesses met with the delegates to share experiences and explore opportunities for cooperation between Finland and Hong Kong.

On 22 November, Hsin Chong hosted delegates from a construction company based in Foshan, Guangdong. A half-day programme was presented with representatives from different departments sharing their expertise. Topics included the application of a project cost control system, tender estimating and planning, final accounts, and safety and labour management in Hong Kong.

Regarding the two visits, Ir Joseph Choi, Executive Director of Hsin Chong, commented, “It is a pleasure for us to meet with our industry peers. We appreciate our guests’ interest in our work and industry practices in Hong Kong.” He added, “We are happy to play a part in facilitating these exchanges that offer very good opportunities for mutual learning.”

On 6 December, Hsin Chong’s project team along with representatives from our client, Drainage Services Department (DSD), and consultant, Black & Veatch (BV), gathered at the commissioning ceremony for the interception facilities at Jordan Valley Box Culvert.

The ceremony was officiated by Chan Chi-chiu, JP, Director of DSD; Kelvin Lau, Director of BV; and Paul Lee, Assistant Managing Director of Hsin Chong Construction Company Limited. They were joined by other government officials and district council members.

Started in 2011, the project provides interception facilities at Jordan Valley Box Culvert to improve the water quality of Kai Tak Approach Channel. “We are happy to celebrate the successful commission of this project here today with our client and the consultant,” said Mr. Lee. “Hsin Chong wants to thank DSD for placing its trust in us, and not least the contribution from everyone working on this project.”

席間，雙方互相分享經驗，並探討芬蘭與香港之

間的合作機遇。

11月22日，新昌接待來自佛山廣東六建集團的代

表，並安排不同部門為訪客介紹新昌的專長，分

享主題包括工程項目成本控制系統、招標估算與

規劃、工程結算，以及香港的安全和勞動管理。

新昌營造執行董事蔡健鴻工程師對代表團的來

訪表示歡迎：「我們很高興與業界同行會面，

亦感謝訪客主動了解我們的工作及香港行業慣

例。我們十分樂意促進交流活動，提供互相學

習的良好機會。」

新昌獲批兩份房屋委員會新合約，分別為位於東涌及元朗的

公屋發展項目。

東涌第56區發展項目內容包括興建四幢樓高38至41層的住

宅樓宇，附政府、社會福利、幼稚園和零售設施。項目落成

後將提供3,580個住宅單位。

元朗項目位於前凹頭政府宿舍，內容包括興建一幢樓高20層

及兩幢樓高16層的住宅樓宇，設有停車場及單層商場，落成

後將提供合共1,203個住宅單位。

新昌將在上述項目中以建築環境評估法（BEAM）為建築標準。

佐敦谷箱形雨水渠截流設施於12月6日舉行啟用典禮，新昌項目團隊與客戶

渠務署及顧問博威工程的代表在當日聚首一堂。

啟用典禮由渠務署署長陳志超太平紳士、博威工程顧問有限公司董事劉毅

輝及新昌營造廠有限公司助理董事總經理李啟鴻，連同其他政府官員及區

議會成員主禮。

項目於2011年開展，所建的截流設施有助改善啟德水道的水質。李啟鴻表

示：「今天，我們很高興與客戶和顧問在此一同見證項目啟用。新昌非常

感謝渠務署的信任，亦很感謝所有參與工程人士的努力和貢獻。」

Hsin Chong recently won a main contract from the Water Supplies Department (WSD), in joint venture with Tsun Yip, for the replacement and rehabilitation of water mains in northern and eastern New Territories. The works form part of Stage 4, Phases 1 and 2 of the WSD’s comprehensive programme to rejuvenate the water supply network. A contract signing ceremony was held on 29 November at the head office of the Water Supplies Department.

Kwan Chi Keung: Devotion over the Years關自強：多年來孜孜不倦

Chief Construction Manager Kwan Chi Keung became a member of the Hsin Chong family in 1979 and has worked continuously at the company for more than 30 years.

Kwan said training opportunities opened doors for him right away. “It wasn’t simply a matter of the company giving us money to take courses,” he explained. “They also gave us time to learn. As a result, I have a strong sense of belonging to Hsin Chong.”

Over the years, Kwan has proved a valuable presence on a wide variety of projects. At first he worked primarily on construction contracts affiliated with the Housing Authority. Later he would work on everything from elegant hotels to cutting-edge data centres.

Kwan recalled one particularly unforgettable project involving the residential development Kornhill Gardens. Over a 12-month period in 1986-87, he and his team had to complete all works from building formation to the erection of a 20-storey tower.

He said a healthy team-centred attitude encouraged everyone to excel. “We had to communicate with owners, engineers, architects and of course fellow colleagues to keep moving forward,” he noted. “We emphasised team spirit to bring out the best ideas possible.”

Another memorable project promoted a family feeling. From 1992 to 1995, Kwan worked on United Christian Hospital, a complicated undertaking because

extra care had to be taken to avoid disrupting patients and hospital traffic. He learned a great deal simply by observing and discussing approaches with other experienced colleagues.

“Some colleagues showed me how important it was to establish trusting relationships with the community, and other colleagues were skilful in explaining to the end users what was happening,” he recalled. “That was eye-opening. I appreciated my colleagues’ generosity with me.”

As a result, Kwan recognised that working at Hsin Chong is comparable to maturing in a family. He stated he feels a burst of pride whenever he points out to his granddaughter a building that he helped construct. “I am sincerely pleased to be part of the Hsin Chong family,” he said with a smile. “It’s nice to grow both professionally and personally.”

When Augustine Tang, Director – Macau Civil Engineering and Building Construction, joined Hsin Chong in 1976, he had no idea that a lengthy and distinguished career awaited him. He was a fresh secondary school graduate and only 18 years old.

“Hsin Chong had a training scheme for technical staff,” he recalled. “I attended a part-time day-release course in construction engineering and worked as a technician apprentice for four years.”

Even as a young employee, Tang was involved in Hsin Chong’s signature projects. His first came in 1979 in Mei Foo at one of the company’s first large-scale housing developments. Tang remembered the working hours were longer than today’s.

“We started at 7:30 in the morning and finished at about 6,” he said. But the demanding schedule helped colleagues bond. “We had a wonderful team of highly-trained people – engineers, mechanics, surveyors,” Tang added. “You seldom saw that in Hong Kong in those days.”

Tang steadily climbed through the ranks. He was the site manager for a Chek Lap Kok project to construct stormwater drainage box culverts for the new airport and later the senior project manager in Shenzhen as Hsin Chong built headquarters for Huawei Technologies, a joint venture that represented the Group’s first time as a main contractor in China. The latest projects he oversees include Galaxy Resort & Casino Phase 2 in Cotai City and Campus Development at University of Saint Joseph.

“I’ve held many roles, so I know very well how Hsin Chong operates,” he said. “We started as a medium-sized company and grew to a big one. We now have a lot of departments with staff numbering in the thousands.”

Amid the company’s evolution, Tang mentioned a constant strength. “The biggest advantage of Hsin Chong is its people,” he said. “We have excellent people with diverse backgrounds. We train well, and our retention rates are also quite stable. It’s like a large talented family.”

董事鄧文儀於1976年加入新昌，當時年

僅18歲的他剛剛中學畢業，對未來漫長

而傑出的職業生涯仍亳無頭緒。

他回憶說：「新昌提供專為技術人員而設

的培訓計劃，我曾經參加建造工程的在職

日間課程，並擔任技術員學徒四年。」

即使鄧先生當年十分年輕，仍有機會參

與新昌的標誌性項目，第一次便是於

1979年參與公司首個大型屋苑發展項目

之一的美孚新邨。鄧先生猶記得當時的

工作時間比現在更長。

「我們從早上七時半工作至大約下午六

時。」然而，要求嚴格的時間表讓同事們

更加團結，鄧先生補充道：「我們擁有訓

練有素的專業團隊，包括工程師、機械師

和測量師，那時候在香港很少看到。」

鄧先生逐步晉升至管理層，曾擔任赤鱲

角項目的工地經理，為新機場建造雨水

排放暗渠，然後在深圳擔任華為技術總

部建造項目的高級項目經理，該合營企

業是集團首次在中國作為主要承包商的

項目。到最近負責的重大項目還包括澳

門銀河娛樂渡假村第二期及聖若瑟大學

校園發展項目。

他表示：「我曾經擔任過很多不同的職

位，對新昌運作非常熟悉。我們由一間

中等規模的公司發展成現在的大型建造公

司，設有多個部門，擁有數千名員工。」

即使公司不斷發展，但其中的核心力量

仍然保持不變。鄧文儀指出：「新昌最

大的優勢是員工，我們擁有來自不同背

景的優秀人才，加上良好的培訓計劃，

挽留人才率相當穩定，就像是一個出色

的大家庭。」

新昌總建造經理關自強於1979年加入新昌這個大家庭，一直在公司服

務超過30年。

關先生表示他得到了不少培訓的機會，「公司不但資助我們參加課程，

還給予我們時間學習。因此，我對新昌有一份很強的歸屬感。」

多年來，關先生在不同的發展項目均表現出色。他起初主要參與房屋委

員會的建造合約工程，後來涉足各個範疇，由優雅的酒店以至尖端的數

據中心。

康山花園住宅發展項目可說是關先生最難忘的項目之一。康山花園建於

1986年至1987年，關先生與項目團隊需要在短短12個月內，由興建

地基到完成20層高的住宅大樓。

他表示團隊良好的態度讓大家都發揮出超水準的表現，「我們需要與業

主、工程師、建築師及各同事溝通協作，帶領項目繼續前進。我們很重

視團隊合作精神，集思廣益，結合出最佳的可行方案。」

另一個令關先生最難以忘懷的是1992年至1995年的聯合醫院項目，這

個複雜的項目需要格外小心處理，盡量避免影響病人和醫院附近的交

通。通過觀察和與其他有經驗的同事互相討論，關先生學到了不少知

識，也讓他感覺到一種家的感覺。

他回憶說：「有些同事向我解釋與社區建立互信關係的重要性，有些同

事擅於向最終使用者講解項目的發展，真的很感謝同事們樂於與我分享

他們的心得。」

經過多年來的工作，關先生明白到新昌就如一個大家庭。每當他向孫女

指出某些建築物是他有份參與建造時，都不禁流露絲絲的喜悅。他笑著

表示：「我衷心為自己可以成為新昌家庭的其中一員而高興，不但在專

業和個人方面都有所成長。」

Senior Plant Manager Lo Wai Shing, now working on the Galaxy Macau project, has worked at Hsin Chong for 35 years. He joined Hsin Chong’s volunteer team when it was established nine years ago and became a team leader in its second year.

The team started out by providing minor electrical and water-related repairs as well as painting for underprivileged members of the community. The idea was to leverage the company’s expertise and colleagues’ strengths. The team still upholds this fine tradition.

“It is always more of a blessing to give than to receive,” said Lo of his guiding principle. The volunteer team now consists of several core members, including Lo, who enjoys seeing his unified team give out help.

“At first I just wanted to help the needy, but our team spirit now motivates me to keep volunteering.” He added, “We all cherish our friendships and the time we spend striving together to achieve the same goal.”

Through the years, Lo has found a way to comfortably interact with the elderly or ex-mentally ill. “Just take things easy as if you were at your own home,” he said. “There’s no need to fear anything. You can observe the person’s home, find out what he or she likes and talk about their favourite things.”

Lo recalled a visit with an ex-mentally ill person who displayed coins and notes at his home. “We had a nice conversation about his interest while performing our services,” he said. Looking ahead, Lo wishes to increase the scale and variety of Hsin Chong’s volunteerism. “We hope more colleagues will seize the initiative to take part in volunteering,” he added.

He regards each ‘thank you’ as a great encouragement and each recipient’s smile as the best reward. Lo concluded, “The most important thing in all of this is happiness – both for the recipients and the volunteers.”

他於九年前加入新昌義工隊，並於翌年成為義工領袖。

義工隊起初為區內弱勢社群提供小型的水電維修和油漆服務，希

望運用公司的專長和同事們的強項，為社會出一分力，至今仍然

堅持著這一份優良傳統。

盧偉成表示：「我的宗旨是『施比受更有福』。」義工隊現在由數

個包括盧先生在內的核心成員所組成，每當看到義工隊團結一致幫

助別人時，他也感到無比的快樂。

「起初我只是想幫助有需要的人，但我們的團隊合作精神激勵我不

斷參與義工服務。」他補充說：「我們都很珍惜彼此間的友誼及相

聚時光，努力實現同一目標。」

這些年來，盧先生已經找到了一種與長者或精神病康復者互動的方

式。他建議道：「只需要當作在自己家裡般輕鬆便可。不需要擔心

任何事情，你可以觀察服務對象的家中，看看他們喜歡什麼，再和

他們聊聊喜歡的東西。」

盧先生回想起一次到訪精神病康復者家中的經驗，那名服務對象向

他展示收藏的紙幣和硬幣。「我們一起談了很多關於這個興趣的話

題，非常愉快。」展望未來，盧先生希望增加新昌義工服務的規模

和種類， 他補充道：「我們希望更多同事主動加入義工的行列。」

他視每一句「謝謝」為最大的鼓舞，受惠者每一個微笑為最佳的獎

勵。盧先生總結說：「其實最重要的是受惠者和義工都從中感受到

快樂。」

Senior Project Coordinator Rachel Mak is as cheerful as she is responsible – someone everyone can like and count on.

When Mak joined the company in 2005, she was the only woman in the graduate trainees (GT) programme. Her consistently positive attitude indicated a bright future. Even before graduating from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) with a bachelor’s degree in Building Engineering and Management, Mak learnt about the Phase 7 Campus Development project at PolyU undertaken by Hsin Chong when she was preparing her graduation thesis and interviewing industry professionals. It was also her first project after entering Hsin Chong.

At that time, Mak was a graduate trainee and responsible for clearing the building for inspection. Though at first the work seemed simple and inconspicuous, after working for two months she learned that teamwork matters, regardless of one’s seniority. “People trust you when you’re clearly trying to get things done right,” commented Mak.

Afterwards, she worked on the Prince of Wales Hospital extension block project for over three years. As a hospital project, the working process and coordination between various departments were complex. Teamwork again mattered, and the project is considered one of the Group’s greatest achievements. “Completing that project gave me great sense of satisfaction,” Mak said. “I feel really lucky that I’ve worked with committed people who were willing to work hard and support each other. They opened my mind.”

That experience was followed by three months in management training. Currently, Mak is working on the HSBC Shek Mun Building project. She has grown in her ability to balance her responsibilities as she now chairs the GT Club and at home has a young son.

Through the GT Club, Mak seeks to create a platform for colleagues to communicate. “Everyone benefits if we exchange information and share experience,” she explained. “Work can be stressful, but we can cope more easily if we are willing to support and help each others.”

In reflecting on her career, Mak declared, “If you’re willing to work hard as part of a team, you can improve yourself and be fulfilled.”

高級項目統籌主任麥瑞婷性格開朗而且工作認真，每個人都喜歡和

她合作。

當麥小姐於2005年加盟公司時，她是見習工程人員計劃中唯一的女

生，其一貫積極的態度為她展開了光明的未來。早於香港理工大學

建造工程及管理學士畢業前，麥小姐因預備畢業論文，向行業相關

的專業人士作論文訪問，而接觸新昌當時於香港理工大學進行的第

七期校園工程項目，其後亦成為她加入新昌第一個參與的工程。

當時身為見習工程人員的她，獲安排負責驗樓前的清場工作。開始

時看似只是普通、不起眼的工作，經過兩個月的驗樓過程讓她明白

到：不論一個人的資歷如何，每個人當中的付出對整個團隊都相當

重要。「只要自己能夠好好完成一件事，別人對自己的信任就會慢

慢地建立起來。」

其後，她曾參與歷時超過三年的威爾斯親王醫院擴展工程項目，該項

目被視為集團最重大的成就之一。作為醫院項目，當中的工序及各部

門的協調有一定的複雜性，團隊精神相當重要。麥小姐表示：「完成

此項目為我帶來很大的滿足感，我覺得自己真的很幸運，可以跟一群

願意付出、互相扶持、敢於承擔的同事合作，讓我擴闊眼界。」

參與威爾斯擴展工程項目後，麥小姐接受了為期三個月的管理培訓，

目前負責石門匯豐大廈項目。麥小姐學習到如何在工作和家庭中取得

平衡，除了領導 GT Club 之外，亦分配時間照顧年幼的兒子。

麥小姐希望通過 GT Club 為同事提供溝通平台，她解釋說：「如果每個

人都願意交換資訊，大家都可以從經驗中學習，互相得益。工地工作難

免會有壓力，但如果我們能夠互相扶持，就可以更容易解決問題了。」

回顧個人的職業生涯，麥小姐表示：「如果你願意付出，與團隊一同

努力，就可以提升自己，獲益良多。」

give residents in Northeast China a better understanding of the project’s

vision, Hsin Chong opened three sales centres in Tieling New Town, Tieling

Hsin Chong’s achievements in delivering quality public housing

projects were recognised at the Housing Authority’s Quality Public

Housing Construction and Maintenance Awards 2013.

In the New Works Project category, Hsin Chong garnered the following

five awards for demonstrating high-quality performance in its services

and site safety:

KITEC. Cyras Chin, Director of Hsin Chong Construction Company

Hsin Chong Receives Sands Supplier Excellence Award新昌榮獲「金沙供應商卓越獎」

Hsin Chong Wins Hong Kong Construction Environmental Awards 新昌榮獲香港建築環保大獎

On 4 December, Hsin Chong Engineering (Macau) Limited was presented a Supplier Excellence Award in Project Management by Sands China Limited. The Awards were held for the first time this year as part of a global initiative led by Las Vegas Sands Corp., the parent company of Sands China. The award was given in recognition of excellence and sustainable performance and is a symbol of a valued ongoing partnership.

In accepting the award, Keith Buckley, Executive Project Director of Macau Construction Management, stated, “Receiving this recognition is a great honour for us. Since the Sands Macao project in 2003, we’ve maintained a close relationship with Sands China in projects such as Venetian Macao, Four Seasons Hotel Macao, Sands Cotai Central and Parisian Macao. We deeply value our strong partnership and certainly look to carry this success forward.”

At the 2013 HKCA Construction Environmental Awards held on 11 November, both Hsin Chong Construction Company Limited and Hsin Chong Construction (Asia) Limited received an Environmental Merit Award for their outstanding commitment and efforts in promoting environmental protection and sustainable construction.

In addition, Samsung-Hsin Chong Joint Venture working on the Shatin to Central Link Contract 1109 also won a Merit Award in the Innovative Environmental Award category. The award recognises the joint venture’s initiatives which have effectively mitigated environmental impact associated with the stations and tunnels works in Kowloon City.

的「三星—新昌合營」亦贏得環保創新優異獎。

該獎項旨在表揚合營公司採取積極措施，有效緩

解九龍城車站及隧道工程所引起的環境影響。

於12月4日舉行的首屆「金沙供應商卓越獎」頒獎典禮上，新

昌工程（澳門）有限公司榮獲金沙中國有限公司頒發項目管

理組別的卓越獎。獎項由金沙中國母公司拉斯維加斯金沙集

團牽頭舉辦。獎項旨在表揚新昌提供卓越和持續穩定的服務

表現，同時亦象徵雙方長久的重要夥伴關係。

澳門建造管理行政項目總監 Keith Buckley 在領獎時表示：

Home Maintenance Service in North Point「家居維修傳揚愛」義工探訪北角長者As in previous years, Hsin Chong organised a home maintenance charity programme in October to help improve home safety for elderly in need.

In col laborat ion with SAGE Eastern Distr ict E lder ly Community Centre, our vo lunteers v is i ted a number of households in North Point on 5 October. In addition to performing basic home maintenance works, the volunteers engaged the elderly residents in friendly conversation and presented them with gift packs.

Volunteers gained warm appreciation from the residents for their help and generosity.

白石俱樂部舉行燒烤之旅，讓新

昌同事與親友歡聚同樂。當日，

參加者參與各式各樣的休閒活

動，包括高爾夫球、踏單車、放

風箏、打麻將等，在秋高氣爽的

日子裡舒展身心。

Human Resources organised a fun-filled

BBQ outing for colleagues and their

families and friends on 23 November. The

half-day gathering took place at Whitehead

Club in the New Territories. A wide range

of activities were on offer. Some played

golf, while others went cycling, flew kites or

played mahjong. Everyone who attended

took pleasure in the relaxing autumn

gathering.

Hsin Chong received the HKQAA CSR Advocate Mark from the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency for the second consecutive year. This recognition highlights our endeavour to enhance corporate social responsibility.

At the presentation ceremony on 29 November, Group HSEQ Manager, Lee Kam Shing represented Hsin Chong to accept the award. “Our firm belief in taking on corporate social responsibility is an integral part of our corporate culture,” said Mr. Lee. “Hsin Chong has always been committed to making contributions to the sustainable development of our employees, the community and the environment. We’ll continue to adopt good CSR practices.”

On 12 December, Hsin Chong Construction Group held its 74th Anniversary Dinner at Star Hall, KITEC. With ‘Water Park’ as its theme, the grand party was emceed by the celebrity DJ, Sammy. The celebration kicked off with a spirited song and dance performance by senior management. In addition, attendees participated in fun games, and awards were presented to acknowledge outstanding colleagues. The evening concluded with an exciting lucky draw and a performance by the famous singer Mimi Lo, joined by senior management.
