One of the oldest educational inst itut ions in the countr y, the University of Cambridge

plays a key role in British heritage. Wit h more t han 18,000 st udents, nearly 9000 staff, 31 Colleges and 150 Departments, Faculties, Schools and other institutions, the University of Cambridge is undeniably a world-class university that invests heavily in its facilities and people.

T he Un iver sit y of Ca mbr idge holds an annual purchasing exhibition where members of staff can meet with preferred suppliers. Keen to build on its relationships with local businesses and higher education institutions, Arco, the UK’s leading safety supplier, attended the exhibition and met with members of the procurement team. Making the purchase of PPE manageable and affordableWork i ng w it h t he e-proc urement team, Arco uploaded over 90% of its product range onto the University ’s procurement platform, the “Science Wa rehouse ”. I n stead of t rawl i ng t h r o u g h a v a r i e t y o f d i f f e r e n t websites and suppliers, Universit y staff and students can now simply use t hei r i nter na l sea rc h fac i l it y to access t he w ide ra nge of A rco products. Orders will be transferred direct to Arco purchasing software, with set discounts already in place. Arco worked with the University to try and make purchasing PPE more manageable and affordable.

Able to deal with potential queries quickly and efficientlyTo ensure that all of the University of Cambridge’s needs were met, the Arco team also offered product training, workshops and additional customer ser v ice support. Matt Steed, A rco Account Manager commented: “We created a dedicated hotline and email address for the University, should any staff or students have any queries. We also trained four members of staff at our Not t ingham branch on t he University contract and their require-ments. The dedicated team of staff are made constantly aware of what is going on within the University in order to deal with potential queries quickly and efficiently. We felt that this service went above and beyond the traditional supplier and added a personal touch to the business relationship.”

Bilco assists industry to access education

Bilco has launched Bilco Assist, a new initiative aimed at sharing its k nowledge and expert ise

with the construction industry. The leading access products manufacturer is investing in providing a resource which architects, building engineers, f ac i l it ie s m a n age r s, r o ofe r s a nd mechanical and electrical contractors can tap into, to improve their skills in access product specification.

“This is one area in which most of the industry’s proficiency in specifi-cation still lies with the manufacturer,” says James Fisher, Managing Director for Bi lco. “W hile access products have evolved and improved over the past couple of decades, there is still a confusion of ownership of their speci-fication process, so the usual wealth of knowledge that comes with years of practice just hasn’t been accumulated.

“We want to be able to help educate those who need to specify roof access products, so our teams will be available on site, at the end of a phone and to provide CPD seminars at a customer’s own premises if they prefer; in order to share the dos and don’ts of roof hatch specification, in order to achieve a quality product and installation, while maximising best value for money.”

The task of roof hatch specification can be carried out by an architect, but is also often left to the building contractor, M&E contractor or roofer. Bi lco has obser ved t hat faci l it ies managers can find that they inherit a product that is not the most suitable and can even represent an ongoing safety issue, which could have been avoided with a more informed specification.

Because the task can land almost any where a long t he const r uct ion chain, it is often handed to someone with less experience than they would normally need to make a truly informed

decision. “When you repeatedly carry out a task, you tend to become expert at it,” explains Fisher. “Being given this task from time to time doesn’t make it easy for anyone to become proficient at it or to remain current in their knowledge. So it seemed a sensible move for us to make what we know more widely available; hence the launch of Bilco Assist.”

Bilco Assist also includes a repos-itory of information on Bilco’s website www.bilcouk.com, which includes CAD drawings, BIM information and NBS building specifications. “If you haven’t had the opportunity to become expert, the next best thing is to consult one – ideally, Bilco,” concludes Fisher.

Bilco is also forging links with i n du s t r y o r g a n i s at i o n s a n d h a s recent ly joined both the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the Single Ply Roofing Association, through which it is working to share advice and guidance on specifying suitable products for each project or application.

A study in safe storageFeatured client: Yanco

Yanco are successful manufac-turers of insecticide booklets in sachets, working with various

chemicals on a daily basis. Conscious of their need to embrace the very best of safety technology, Yanco recently installed fully compliant hazardous storage solutions from DENIOS.

The challengeYanco were looking for a competent partner to plan and build internal storage solutions for a variety of materials.

The regulation compliant storage was required to store drums or pallets c ont a i n i n g c he m ic a l s i nc lud i n g flammables, oxidising powders, toxics and poisons, as well as non-hazardous products.

The solutionAfter a number of risk assessments and site visits were carried out, DENIOS engineers designed a solution to ensure the safe storage of all chemicals on-site, providing three different containers to meet the requirements.

The first container was a special fire resistant cabinet that was divided into

four compartments, with fire resistant div iding wal ls, g iv ing separat ion bet ween t he tox ic s, poison s a nd f lammables. Each compartment was fitted with an individual sump fully compliant with PPG 26 Regulations.

Further to this, the compartment for f lammables was installed with a powered extractor for optimum safety.

The second container, for the storage of oxidising powders on pallets, was a 90-minute fire-resistant solution with a concrete floor and was installed with door opening restraints.

The final cabinet was designed to store the non-hazardous materials on IBCs and pallets and was naturally ventilated and fitted with wing doors.

A l l conta i ners i nsta l led were constructed of galvanized steel painted in DENIOS blue, forklift accessible for easy transport, and exceed the require-ments set out by regulation PPG 26, as well as approval from the DIBt German Institute of Construction.

The resultThe ability to divide one large fire-rated container into four compartments to safely and successfully store different chemicals offered the customer space saving storage. Yanco received efficient, cost-effective and regulation compliant storage containers, making a significant contribution to their operational and environmental protection.DENIOS Ltd.

Energiewerke Nord GmbH relies on protective coveralls made from DuPont™ Tyvek®

Fo r o v e r t e n y e a r s n o w , Energiewerke Nord GmbH (EWN) ha s b een re ly i ng on Ty ve k ®

protective coveralls from DuPont to protect its staff during demolition of the decommissioned nuclear power plant at Lubmin on the Baltic coast. Tyvek® Classic Xpert coveralls are used wherever staff may come into contact with solid airborne particles, hazardous l i q u i d s u b s t a n c e s a n d r e s i d u a l radioactive particles. They meet the requirements applicable to Category III chemical protective clothing, Types 5 (particle-tight) and Type 6 (limited splash protection), and to protective clothing against radioactive contami-nation (EN 1073-2:2002, Class 2/3).

During the clearance (dismantling of plant parts) or clean-up of buildings, EWN staff can come into contact with Kamilit mineral wool insulation, asbestos f ibres, mineral and f ine particles. Protective garments made from Tyvek® provide an extremely high abrasion-

resistant barrier to airborne particles, even those within the size range of >1 µm in diameter, and so provide reliable protection against contamination by these hazardous substances.

T he pr o duc t pa r t ic le ba r r ie r performance of the protective garments by far exceeds the minimum require-ments of the Type 5 whole suit inward leakage test. Being single-use protective clothing, contamination is also not trans-ferred to other locations, as once they have been removed by the wearer, they are immediately sent for disposal. To complement the protection provided by the coveralls, staff must also wear gloves, full-face or half masks and safety shoes.

Crucial factors in the selection of Tyvek® protective coveralls were their elevated resistance to tearing and tear propagation, the material’s good air and water vapour permeability, the low weight of the garment (< 180 g) and its ergonomic design. As Hartmut Timpf, head safety engineer at EWN says: “Our

s t a f f s omet i me s h ave to work in areas which are dif f icult to access, so elevated freedom of movement and breatha-bility were decisive criteria when it came to selecting p r o t e c t i v e g a r m e n t s . DuPont’s garments fit like a second skin and do not restrict our staff in carrying out their work. We were a lso impressed by t he quality of the products in terms of their manufacture and material.”

Hosking Associates supporting the Comfort Controls Health and Safety programme

Comfort Controls helps to create energy efficient buildings that are safe, sustainable and beneficial to

their occupants. The company achieves this by carefully managing the balance between the user’s requirements and their energy consumption.

Com for t Cont rols operates as a bui ldi ng ma nagement cont rols specialist, manufacturer and installer of motor control centres, as well as electrical contractor. Because its success is down to its staff, it is therefore vital these employees are looked after in the best way possible. Since its inception, the company has grown from a core team of five people to now employing over 30 staff from its head office in Hemel Hempstead.

Kris Mitchell joined the company as a project manager prior to the rapid growth phase. It was during this growth that he realised the company needed to have a more compre-hensive approach to health and safety. He comments: “I knew we needed more than an audit; we needed to have full risk assess-me nt s u nde r t a ke n and policies in place. We appreciated that we’d now be looking towards working on bigger projects, and i n or de r f or u s t o successfully tender, these policies would need to be in place. The time had come to

really invest in our health and safety practices.”

Health and safety specialists, Hosking Associates, were introduced to Comfort Controls through a mutual client.

Louise Hosking, director at Hosking Associates, adds: “We looked at the entire business holistically, and developed solutions for their health and safety concerns. We created something that reads more like an employee handbook. Every year this policy will be reviewed and fine-tuned to suit the updated business requirements.”

Louise goes on to say: “With Comfort Controls, we started by undertaking an initial review of their whole business and developed an action plan that we could share responsibility for. We created generic arrangements and agreed ways of working with the directors. We then worked alongside relevant project managers to ensure site specific assess-

ments and methods of work could be created by them.”

Who says health and safety can’t be exciting?

People who understand health and safety know that it isn’t all about stopping fun and exciting things

from happening; it ’s actually about making sure they happen safely.

As one of Britain’s top venues hosting over 500 events each year, the NEC understands how to put on a fun and exciting show. It also understands health and safety.

A s N EC Event Ma nager Em ily Burkes explained, the industry is highly competitive and so being customer focussed is extremely important. She told us: “In the past the attitude may have been ‘oh that ’s going to be too difficult so let’s just say no’. Now we say almost anything is possible, let’s just see how we can manage it safely.”

Of cou r se a s we l l a s keepi ng its customers happy, the NEC has a huge responsibility. It has 182,000 square metres of indoor space, 20 interconnecting halls, 34 specialist conference and meeting suites and a huge arena on site. T his means many thousands of people, including employees, occupy its space on an almost daily basis. Their safet y is paramount.

The NEC has a specialist safety team, but like a growing number of organisations it also sees the value of having other managers qualified in health and safety. As a result, all Event Managers there, such as Emily Burkes, are required to hold a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safet y and a NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management.

T he role of events manager is extensive. Once a contract has been signed with a client, the NEC Event Manager steps in to ensure that the event runs smoothly. A big part of this is health and safety.

While clients are expected to take ownership of safety issues, the Event Managers are there to help, offering guidance and spotting any issues in advance or which may arise on the day.

“I think we’re more respected by being NEBOSH qualified, particularly when working with organisers on site who bring in their own safety repre-sentatives,” said Emily.

“The qualifications also help you to spot more potential problems and give you the tools to deal with them properly. I believe we are more knowledgeable and more effective with it. There’s a lot to deal with here – traffic, rigging, cater ing, c leaning, py rotechnics, stunts, all kinds really.”

She found tak ing and passing both of her NEBOSH qualifications “incredibly enjoyable”, although she admits she found some of the legal elements a little tough.

Emily added: “There’s health and safety in everything now and I think you can apply a NEBOSH Certificate to any role. All industries require health and safety and with NEBOSH behind you, you know you’ve got a good grounding, as well as something that makes you more employable and opens up all kinds of diverse opportunities.”

Svantek

Svantek offers 24-hour noise and vibration monitoring

Portable environmental sound and vibration stations meet the contractual requirement for real

time measurement in surgical and external environments.

When 24-hour real time measurement of noise and vibration levels was required by McLaughlin & Harvey, one of the UK’s leading construction companies, for a building project at Kings College Hospital, three SV212 portable environmental vibration and sound monitoring stations from Svantek were considered the best solution for the job.

Tom Irving from McLaughlin & Harvey comments: “As part of our contractual obligation with K ings College Hospital, the noise and vibration associated with the construction project needed to be very tightly managed. It required 24-hour real time monitoring of both surgical and external environments.”

The Svantek SV212 stations were chosen because they were the most competitive, efficient and accurate way of monitoring noise and vibration on site. McLaughlin & Harvey also liked their robust, compact design. Advanced trigger and alarm functions alert when limits are exceeded plus data can be easily accessed and downloaded for inclusion in the monthly reports required by clients.

In line with the Hospital’s specifi-cations, two of the SV212 stations are installed near live surgical theatres whilst the other is located externally.

McLaughlin & Harvey found the stations easy to install and simple to operate following useful training from Svantek.

As well as building and construction site monitoring, the SV212 is suitable for online vibration and noise measurement,

acoustic map making and web-site population.

The SV212 kit consists of a SVAN958 four-channel sound and v ibration analyser, which is available with both PPV and weighted VDV measurement, with the latest standardised filters. The SVAN958 instrument is installed within a waterproof case which is also equipped with a rechargeable battery and controller.

Vibration monitoring is performed using a SV207B tr ia x ial bui lding v ibrat ion t ra nsducer w it h high ly sensitive accelerometer (1 V/g) mounted in a robust, hermetically sealed metal base. A specially designed levelling system allows compensation of the ground level slope.

Svantek’s SV212 is also available with the option of a SV208 outdoor microphone kit for periodical monitoring. Protected by a SA277 windscreen, both the SV207B and SV208 are developed for outdoor use and can be connected to the SV212 monitoring station by waterproof connectors.

Additional features include GPRS modem and SvanPC++_RC remote communication software.

Skyhook GB: safety built in

Sk yhook GB special ise in the development and manufacture of a comprehensive range of cable

management systems. With one third of all injuries reported in 2012 being the result of slip or trip in the workplace. Its products have been invested in by some of leading names in the construction industry.

For years, the construction industry has been moving at an amazing rate using more advanced materials and better means of fixings. There has been a great emphasis on health and safety to protect workers at the forefront of this building boom.

Skyhook GB’s Skyhook, Multihook, Extendable Stands and its latest product, Medihook, are all geared to reducing workplace injuries and are being imple-mented throughout the construction industry in the UK.

A family run business, Skyhook GB currently works with over 150 clients throughout the UK. The British company constantly strives to raise the standards of the sector.

Skyhook, the company’s benchmark product, can be used in three different ways. It can provide temporary support, hooking over f loor joists and ceiling grids. Secondly, the Skyhook can be used in a fixing hole; screwed upwards into a concrete ceiling for example. However, if there is not anywhere to hang support or the user is unable to get a fixing overhead, the skyhook can be fixed and easily attached through a side hole to support cables and keep them off the floor.

Manufactured from non-conductive m ate r ia l , Sk y ho ok GB’s or ig i n a l Skyhook reduces the risk of electro-cution from damaged cables. It also eliminates damage to power leads and reduces the risk of trip hazards, making the site a safer place to work. The product is designed in yellow for improved visibility although other colours are available on request.

Multihook and Extendable Stands are designed in much the same way as the Skyhook; the Multihook features an additional loop to accommodate multiple cables. It also comprises an additional fixing point which can rotate, allowing the larger loop to accommodate larger, heavy duty cables.

The Multihook can be used in unison with Skyhook GB’s extensive tower stand which can be raised up to three metres in height. Made from steel box section, the tower stand features a non-conductible plastic head, which can be attached to the top of the stand and can carry multiple cables at varying heights.

Medihook, designed for use in hospitals, is manufactured from glass filled polypropylene and is available in a standard off white colour. The product is used to raise cables and tubing off the floor, reducing the risk of patients and health care professionals tripping or falling. The Medihook also prevents cables f rom becoming trapped by mattresses. The number of hooks used can be increased or decreased depending on size, weight and number of cables/tubing, although a minimum of four is recommended.

The upper part of the Medihook clips on to the bed rail while the lower part is used to thread cables through. The hook is easily maintained and can be wiped down between use with a soft cloth moistened with a mild detergent in hot water.

uvex pheos rivals leading designer eyewear brandsFeatured client: Dorset Police

Paul Chick MBE is head of transport services for Dorset Police. He is responsible for strategic policy

decisions on the procurement, mainte-nance and safe running of the force’s entire fleet of 450 vehicles, boats and transport-related equipment, which covers more than 6.5 million miles a year.

Dorset police force is one of the smaller but highest-performing police forces in the UK and has responsibility for the 89 miles of beautiful coastline the county enjoys, as well as for the wellbeing of residents and the many thousands of visitors to the area. A dedicated marine section of full-time officers help to enforce the highly visible policing strategy, which is committed to keeping Dorset’s coastal and inland waters safe.

Paul’s job includes the strategic management of the force’s marine resources and assets, as well as all aspects of transport. He is responsible for 20 dedicated transport staff plus specialist contractors.

Passing the batonThe international sailing and water-sports events of the 2012 Olympic Games were held in Weymouth and Portland — Paul’s patch. An unprecedented 67-day, round-the-clock police operation required specialist teams and was the largest on-water security operation in the history of UK policing.

Paul had to deliver the operation for the games on target and on budget, and it was while he was maritime operations manager during the Games that Paul’s relationship with uvex began. Several hundred specialist officers on more than 50 rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) were provided with a full range of personal

protective equipment (PPE), including uvex pheos protective sunglasses and uvex hi-com disposable earplugs.

Life through a lensThough traditionally crews on RIBs wear their own, often expensive, branded sunglasses, there were no guarantees that they would meet health and safety requirements.

Conscious of the potential problems users could experience with lenses misting up and spray that would not clear from the lens, and having tried out several different types and brands of safety eyewear and getting feedback from users, Paul chose the uvex pheos sunglare safety spectacle, with 100% UV filter and winner of the German Design Award in 2013.

“We needed protective sunglasses for all police personnel engaged in the operations on the water,” explains Paul. “I looked for quality, innovation, durability, value for money, whole-life cost effectiveness and a design that met the corporate image.”

Paul says that the uvex pheos far exceeded the force’s requirements. “We have never had even one complaint;

The durability and comfort of the uvex pheos were te sted by t hem being worn for 12 hours a day, every single day of the Oly mpics. “ T he glasses al lowed t h e of f ic e r s t o stay on the water throughout their sh i f t s,” repor t s Paul.

“The outstanding design perfectly fitted our corporate image, with all teams dressed in black. All the products were delivered on time and within budget and complied with the required safety legislation. Another advantage was that the uvex pheos comes in a choice of two sizes to suit different sized heads.”

In styleIncreased wear by officers was one of the main benefits of the uvex pheos. “Wearers take ownership of the product, look after it and make it last longer,” notes Paul. “It’s easy for us as managers and we also have a happier workforce. We can issue the glasses and then forget them.”

Paul aims for consistency across his fleet — the same boats, clothing, helmets and safety glasses — so members of the public can easily identify them. The uvex pheos wraparound style gives good peripheral vision while reducing the risk from both UV and wind exposure.

T he a nt i-fog a nd a nt i-scratc h coatings, which are standard on uvex eyewear, are an added bonus, as it means the officers do not have to keep taking them off and cleaning them. Sea spray and salt are both very important issues on the water, and the coatings keep the lens cleaner for longer.

“uvex products were instrumental in assisting in the successful implemen-tation of the Olympic Games,” says Paul.

Future visionSince using the uvex pheos for the Olympics, the force is planning to increase its stock of uvex products with safety boots and gloves, not only for the marine force, but also for frontline support staff.

A new range of safet y glasses, t he uvex polav ision, i s c ur rent ly being tr ial led. “We are looking at using t hem as a mar ine standard stock item for marine officers,” says Paul. The uvex polavision is a twin-lensed sun spectacle with a polarised filter that eliminates nuisance from mirroring and sun reflections, always a problem on the water and in maritime environments.

The force has a brand new Humber RIB just coming into commission on which the uvex polavision specs will be used. “All feedback is very positive so far,” reports Paul.

Noise at work – Cirrus Research has it covered

As one of the world’s top racing engine design and manufac-turers, noise levels have always

been an issue for Ilmor Engineering.But when they won a large contract

with the US giant General Motors to design and manufacture a new turbo-charged V6 racing engine, its managers knew this would result in significantly increased production as well as elevated noise levels across the manufacturing and testing departments.

The new contract meant additional machine tools had to be installed in the main machine shop, adding to the noise background levels. These additions speeded up the production rate but had the potential to ‘tip’ some of the machine operators’ exposure above 80dB(A).

Nick Phillips, Ilmor Engineering’s Manufacturing Manager explained: “When employees are loading and unloading work into the machine, an air gun is used to blow the swarf and excess cutting fluid from the machine. This generates very high levels of noise, albeit of short duration, so hearing protection was used by our operators to control their levels of exposure to noise.”

By using T he Cirr us Research doseBadge, accurate measurements

and recordings of employees’ long term exposure to noise were tracked and analysed.

From the measurements taken during the workers’ shift it was found that there were several points where their noise exposure levels would greatly exceed that of 80dB(A).

After analysing the graphical traces produced by the doseBadge, it was also suspected that the principle reason for the rise was due to the increased use of the air guns. A more detailed investi-gation was undertaken using a Cirrus Optimus Red sound level meter which enabled measurements to be taken of the instantaneous peaks and at a range of different frequencies.

The results gathered from the Optimus were relatively similar to those previously recorded but the main difference came from more occurrences of the air gun being used per shift.

Due to the logarithmic nature of noise exposure, it only takes a few relatively short bursts of high levels of sound, lasting seconds not minutes, to make a significant impact on an operator’s overall dai ly ex posure. For exa mple, exposure to noise levels of 107dB would mean an operator would receive t heir dai ly dose in as little as over 3 minutes. So, the

increased exposure levels recorded by the doseBadge were directly caused by the increased rate of production and directly attributable to the increased use of air guns.

Thanks to the very detailed and accurate information provided by both the DoseBadge and Optimus Red, Ilmor Engineering was able to investigate and modify its manufacturing processes, taking noise levels back down to previous levels.

Lift Safe solves a reel problem for Mission Foods

Lift Safe, specialists in the supply of materials handling equipment and mobile work lifters, has lessened

the load in the Coventry manufacturing plant of Mission Foods, a leading inter-national manufacturer of tortilla wraps and flat breads.

A s pa r t of it s com m it ment to safety, Mission was well aware that its staff should not be handling the larger, heavier reels that the company had started to use for labelling its food packaging, because of the risk of back injury or musculo-skeletal disorders. Mission needed a heavy-duty lifter to pick vertical reels, each weighing up to 60kg, restructured off pallets in the warehouse, turn them, lift them and load

them horizontally on to trolleys to be taken to the food production area where the labels are affixed.

Parma Rai, Production Manager at Mission Foods, explained: “We were looking for an alternative lifting device in the UK that would be safe, easy to use and fit for purpose.”

Simple SolutionLift Safe supplied Mission with five of its Lift & Drive Expando Turn Reel Manipulator lifters to handle the large, heavy reels. Using this manipulator, the reels can effortlessly, smoothly and quickly be turned through 90 degrees to enable safe, easy loading.

The lifting boom of the Expando goes into the core of the reel, where it expands to firmly grip the inside of the core so that it can lift it up to 1.5 metres high, turn the reel with ease and put it into a horizontal loader.

The method of gripping the reel in a stable vertical position is completely safe, and gives the user a clear view of their planned route and the knowledge the load is secure. The equipment is also easy to manoeuvre around a busy packing hall area where there are several members of staff and machinery. With the onboard rechargeable battery the unit becomes efficient and cost effective.”

Addressing plateauing safety performance through cultural safetyFeatured Client: Terex Corporation

Terex Corporation is a large multina-tional organisation manufacturing heav y plant equipment for a

Their challengeThe common theme throughout their sites worldwide was that all of the traditional health and safety was in place, but they were still having accidents and the LTIs were flat lining. Their challenge was turning that into a global reduction in LTIs.

Fortunately we knew Terex were in a common situation, what’s known as the safety wave. What this represents is a pattern where figures are repeatedly down a little one period or two, then up the next and back again between an upper and lower bound.

Sound familiar? It should, there’s a sound statistical reason for it – what you’re seeing is called regression to the norm. In other words, a little bit of expected deviation one way or another from a steady level of performance.

How they are succeeding – engagement with Ryder MarshAs world leaders in implementing effective safety cultures, Ryder Marsh were invited to discuss the methodology for taking the organisation to the next stage of their health and safety culture, where LTIs would be minimised with ma nagement a nd f ront l ine sta f f contributing to the success of the project. Continuous improvement would be at the heart of the projects.

Ryder Marsh first worked on the Motherwell site in Scotland, which at the

time was lagging behind other sites in recent performance. By looking beyond statistics, understanding and addressing the cultural drivers of risk taking behav-iours, the site turned around to become one of their best, going from an average of 2-3 LTIs a month to achieving their first ever year LTI free.

Empowering disabled people by assembling Evacusafe Excel chairFeatured client: Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Higher Organization

ZHOZayed Higher Organization (ZHO) comprises 12 centres for special needs and humanitarian care across Abu Dhabi and provides a range of training and vocational services that aim at rehabilitating disabled people for inclusion into the community.

The ProjectZHO had realised there was a need for evacuation equipment in the region and approached Evacusafe’s distributor for Abu Dhabi, Hedgehog Safety Consultancy, about supplying them with the means to assemble a chair locally. Hedgehog contacted Evacusafe and presented details of the project including working with Novus who agreed to distribute the locally assembled chair.

The SolutionEvacusafe UK and Hedgehog looked at ways of removing certain non-structural elements of the Excel evacuation chair without impacting on its performance (these are packed into the box along with the chair). A small team work to reassemble the parts following strict guidelines, ensuring the continuity of
