Coast to CoastRhythm Foundation on 13 years of the Heineken TransAtlantic Festival.BY DAVID ROLLAND

Thirteen is a number considered by many to be unlucky, but the organ-izers of the 13th-annual Heineken TransAtlantic Festival see them-selves as incredibly fortunate.

When this world-music-focused fest was launched in 2003, it seemed unlikely that a de-cade-plus run lay ahead. But as Rhythm Foun-dation director Laura Quinlan explains, there was hope and opportunity because youth-ful, creative types began flooding Miami.

“People were coming here forming bands, opening galleries, and we wanted to cre-ate an event for them,” Quinlan says. “Our audience before this festival was older and not as reflective of our vibrant, young city. It has challenged us to find new collabora-tors and sounds that keep us relevant.”

The idea was to curate a musical potpourri that mixed and matched the ethnicities, cultures, and musical tradi-tions of every land touching the Atlantic Ocean, from the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America to Europe and Africa.

“We try to get musicians with the spirit of travel and exploration,” Quinlan points out. “What unites the bands is a multicul-tural foundation. A perfect example from this year’s fest is Ana Tijoux. She’s a Chilean MC with a live band who grew up in Paris.”

Noted for her ability to mix singing

with rapping in a single song, Tijoux has been compared to Lauryn Hill. Yet she is also like no one else: a fiery, unique pres-ence on the mike. And just last year, her collaboration with Jorge Drexler, “Uni-versos Paralelos,” was nominated for Song of the Year at the Latin Grammys.

Another Latin American act on the TransAtlantic Festival’s 2015 roster is Puerto Candelaria, a six-man Colombian cumbia

group straight out of Medellín, embarking on only its second tour of the United States.

Closer to home are brother and sister El-liot and Natalie Bergman of Wild Belle, whom Quinlan describes as “based in Brooklyn but playing world music with roots in Afro-pop.” The siblings named their debut album Isles because they wanted each of the songs to be its own island of individuality, influenced by styles ranging from reggae to soul to jazz.

A second group of New Yorkers, the Budos Band, will also make the trip to TransAt-lantic. This self-described “Staten Island instrumental Afro-soul” crew is a nine-piece collective that also packs blasts of psyche-delia, fusion, and funk into every show.

However, while always luring headliners from across the globe, the Rhythm Foun-dation’s fest has also remained dedicated to showcasing local acts. And this year’s edition is no different, because two Miami bands — Bluejay and My Deer — aspire to bring South Florida’s eclecticism to the North Beach Bandshell stage this weekend.

Given the past several years’ boom in Miami music festivals, TransAtlan-tic’s organizers knew they had to step up their game to make their event stand out — and ensure another 13-year run.

“We’ve always been a great open-air fes-tival right next to the beach. But this year we’re adding new elements,” Quinlan says. “We’re going to have two lounges with in-teractive experiences, and we’re trying to be more eco-friendly by not having any plastic. There’s also going to be cool vendors.”

But even amid a fast-changing South Flor-ida festival scene and TransAtlantic’s need to evolve, the Rhythm Foundation director and her crew are thrilled to present another festival. “It’s a puzzle of moving parts to get a selection of artists from the Atlantic rim,” she beams, invigorated by the challenge of it all.

And numerologists be damned — here’s hoping the 13th time will be as charmed as the previous 12.

Get Fadened, BroFadenfest brings Trick Daddy, Otto von Schirach, and punk rock to Wynwood.BY KAT BEIN

M ove over, magic clowns, because Trick Daddy Dollars is about to take over the birthday game.

True Miami boy and avid music lover Eric Faden is turning 24. That’s why he’ll turn Wyn-wood’s LMNT into a 305 free-for-all of music, food, and entertainment this weekend.

There’ll be three stages starring bands, DJs, rappers, and musicians of all kinds, headlined by none other than Miami Mayor Trick Daddy and the Magic City’s legend-arily tripped-out bass weirdo, Otto von Schirach. Technically, it’s a party in Faden’s honor, but he’s really doing it for you.

He grew up a snot-nosed punk rocker. At 14, he was moshing at Churchill’s Pub for every all-ages show. Of course, though, any kid raised in Dade County is gonna be bangin’ Slip-N-Slide anthems too. So between hardcore shows, Faden was bumping booty music and hip-hop classics.

Through the years, he also discovered Miami’s reggae, indie rock, ambient, and dance. But it always seemed strange to Faden that club and show promot-ers didn’t book wildly eclectic bills that reflected the 305’s polymorphous music scene. Thus, Fadenfest was born.

“I really hate how everything in Miami is so sectioned off and segregated. We have all these good artists across the board of all genres,” Faden says. “The goal is to give Miami something to do and to force people to check out stuff that’s not necessarily in their comfort zone.”

For the past five or six years, Faden has packed as many bands, DJs, rappers, and partiers as he could into some house or Hialeah farm. This year, it’s time to go pro. So he nabbed the spot at LMNT and stacked the bill with a lineup that includes hip-hop, Miami bass, punk, hardcore, chillwave, funk, reggae, and some serious 305 star power.

“Trick Daddy is the most Miami person I could think of,” Faden says. “And Otto is such a good rep-resentation of what I’m trying to do. On one of his albums, every song is a different genre of music.”

But a party isn’t a party unless people come out. So the birthday boy is keeping ticket prices low. A

Fadenfest pass costs only $17 presale or $20 at the door. That way, everyone can afford a good time.

“He’s a cool dude,” von Schirach says. “He’s not in it to make money and shit. He just wants to throw a good party.”

For his part, Otto is set to play some new tracks, including a recent collaboration with Brother Marquis of 2 Live Crew. He has also en-listed his entire clique to don every costume he’s got stashed in the infamous von Schirach closet, as well as others that have never been debuted.

“The whole Bermuda Triangle crew is going to be there,” he says. “We’re going to open up

a porthole sound barrier and give good energy to Wynwood at LMNT, baby.”

“That’s the type of vibe I’m going for, just a whole lot of everything,” Faden says. “The artists ask me: ‘Should I have outside performers?’ I told them: ‘Just do everything extra. If you think it’s over-the-top, then it’s probably not enough.’”

Besides music, there’ll be tons of food and m erch vendors, including a spot with sex toys, because it’s that kind of party. Expect a twerking contest for those inspired by the bass, and a punk band if booty-clapping ain’t your thing.

“It’s our mini Lollapalooza or Coachella or something. It has everything from all across the spectrum,” von Schirach says. “It’s going to be cool. I hope a lot of Trick’s fans come, and I hope a lot of my fans come. I hope the whole crew comes out.”
