Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy RÜZGEM - CENTRE FOR WIND ENERGY

“Providing new aerodynamic data that could help improve the performance of current wind turbine systems” •The Large Scale Multi-Purpose Wind Tunnel is one of the largest and unique test facilities both in Turkey as well as in Europe•Its core competency is its test facilities and research infrastructure that are also essential for the aeronautical and civil engineering sectors. The two major research test facilities are the Large Scale Multi-Purpose Wind Tunnel and the Structures and Materials Laboratory.•Variable test sections provide a unique testing capability for both research and contract work related to turbine aerodynamics. •It can also be used for research on various rotary and fixed wing aeronautical systems as well as testing many civil engineering structures.

“TRAFFIC PSYCHOLOGY FOR SAFE TRAVELS” Measurement of road safety signals and evaluation and reporting of after intervention in Turkey: •METU is a partner of “Road Safety in 10 Countries” (RS- 10) initiative‐ , initiated and coordinated by The International Injury Research Unit (IIRU) at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA •METU provides the technical assistance in understanding the impact of road traffic injuries in Turkey.•Activities involve:

• Observational studies of seatbelt use and excessive speeding in 2 sites in Turkey,

• Roadside interviews of drivers and passengers on seatbelt use and speeding in 2 sites in Turkey.

Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials “REFRESH: Contributing To Refreshing Adaptive Strategies To The Mitigation Of The Impacts Of Climate Change" •REFRESH is concerned with climate change, land use (e.g. agriculture), eutrophication and water demand, all of which affect freshwater ecosystems. •REFRESH has the two main goals of:

• Increasing our understanding of how freshwater ecosystems will respond to the environmental changes driven by climate, land use, water use and pollution over the next 50-60 years,

• Translating this knowledge into a form that can be used by water managers.

•This can then feed into the design of cost-effective restoration and management programmes that will account for the projected future impacts and will support efforts to achieve and maintain compliance with the Water Framework Directive and Habitats Directive.

METU – I-REES: Initiative for Renewable Energy, Ecosystems and Sustainability

•The field of ‘’Renewable Energy and Sustainability’’ was selected as the first priority area to be supported and a research network was established with the heading ‘’ Initiative for Renewable Energy, Ecosystems and Sustainability (YESAP).’’ •YESAP is a platform aiming at bringing the studies carried out in the fields of renewable energy, ecosystems and sustainability in different departments and units within METU under the same roof. •It endeavours to this end to provide the grounds for cooperation between groups working in the fields of renewable energy, ecosystems and sustainability. •There are different specific fields such as Renewable Energy, Sustainable Environment Management and Technologies, National and International Sustainability Governance under the roof of METU-YESAP. •Researchers from several departments of METU are carrying interdisciplinary studies in these work groups. •Six projects have been supported from 2010 to 2013 in this concept and three of them have already been completed.

Developing New Generation Seismic Codes: “LARGEST BUILDING MODELS TESTED IN TURKEY!”

•The project aimed at exploring the applicability of different performance assessment procedures to the existing and new buildings in Turkey, their consistency with each other and their conformance with the analytical procedures in the 2007 Seismic Code. •In the first phase of the experimental studies, data from the experiments on reinforced concrete components under simulated earthquake loads were compiled. •The performance of structures which represent the Turkish building stock was investigated experimentally in the second phase with laboratory testing. •The third phase was devoted to developing the most effective and economically feasible retrofitting techniques for school and residential buildings, and testing the seismic performances of retrofitted buildings with laboratory experiments.

QUING actively brings together and construct the knowledge needed for inclusive gender+ equality policies, by conceptualizing how technocratic tendencies can be counteracted and how attention for intersectionality can be integrated.

•QUING assess the current content, quality and problems of gender+ equality policies and produce recommendations and standards for gender+ training so that policy making fits active gender equal citizenship in a multicultural Europe through 5 integrated activities:

• LARG and WHY generate and bring together new concepts, knowledge and understanding on current practices across the whole of Europe on gender equality policies.

• FRAGEN provides knowledge both on the origins of gender equality policies, and their current materialization.

• STRIQ provides the necessary knowledge to address gender inequality in policy making without contributing to other inequalities.

• Finally, OPERA is an innovative contribution to provide standards, materials and training for gender+ equality.

Dr. Bilge DEMİRKÖZ“FROM DARK MATTER TO THE POSSIBILITY OF ANTIGALAXIES: TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WE - AND THE UNIVERSE - ARE MADE OF” Dr. Demirköz got her B.Sc. in the fields of Physics and Mathematics at MIT, USA and continued her studies in the same university for three years at Ph.D. level. She received her doctoral degree from Oxford University, UK and conducted research at CERN. Dr. Demirköz, who took part in the ATLAS Experiment, is currently a faculty member of the Physics Department at METU. Research: AMS is a multi-purpose particle physics experiment that was carried to the International Space Station with the launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour flight STS-134 on the 16th of May, 2011. AMS-02 was installed to its final position on the 19th of May, 2011 and has been taking cosmic-ray data since then. AMS has already collected billions of particles in low earth orbit and is now under a calibration and data validation period. AMS will measure cosmic-ray spectrum for photons and charged particles, as well as for primary elements upto Fe with unprecedented accuracy. Specifically, the energy spectra of photons, electrons, positrons and anti-protons can contain signatures of dark-matter annihilation in the galactic halo and the METU team will concentrate its efforts on understanding these spectra.

Dr. Haluk KülahDr. Haluk KÜLAH“INNOVATIVE AND INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH, FOCUSING ON REAL PRODUCTS” Dr. Haluk Külah received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from METU. He received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. From 2003 to 2004, he was employed as a Research Fellow at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Michigan. In 2004, he joined the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of METU. His research is focused on MEMS sensors, mixed-signal interface electronics design for MEMS sensors, BioMEMS, and MEMSbased energy scavenging. Dr. Külah is the Deputy Director of the METU-MEMS Centre. Dr. Külah’s interdisciplinary research group includes collaborators from different disciplines ranging from METU Biology Department Cancer Research Laboratory; Hacettepe University Medical School; Gazi University Medical School; Gazi University Faculty of Pharmacy; METU Mechanical Engineering Department; and METU Chemical Engineering Department.

Dr. Külah’s research is funded by various national and international agencies and companies, including Intel Inc., IBM, European Union 7th Framework Programme, Turkcell, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), and The Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

SMART, GREEN AND INTEGRATED TRANSPORTHorizon 2020 will provide funding for a resource efficient transport that respects the environment by making aircraft, vehicles and vessels cleaner and quieter to minimise transport’s systems’s impact on climate and the environment, by developing smart equipment, infrastructures and services and by improving transport and mobility in urban areas.Horizon 2020 also aims at a better mobility, less congestion, more safety and security with a substantial reduction of traffic congestion; with a substantial improvement in the mobility of people and freight; by developing  new concepts of freight transport and logistics and by reducing accident rates, fatalities and casualties and improving security.Horizon 2020 supports a global leadership for the European transport industry by reinforcing the competitiveness and performance of European transport manufacturing industries and related services including logistic processes and retain areas of European leadership (e.g. such as aeronautics).Horizon 2020 targets a socio-economic and behavioural research and forward looking activities for policy making. • Following the decades of close cooperation, Turkey is already well integrated with the European Union in particular in the socio-economic themes, including cooperation on research and innovation, and in cultural matters. In recent years however, due to the economic and financial crisis as well as continuing tensions in the Middle East and the South and East Mediterranean region, the challenges facing both Turkey and the EU have grown. In this context, the different options for further EU-Turkey cooperation in the next decade should be fully explored, taking into account the rising global importance of Turkey as an independent regional power.

• Research should analyse the economic, social, political and geostrategic challenges and opportunities - for Turkey itself and for the EU - of further integration of Turkey with the EU, taking into account the different forms this collaboration could take as well as its historical, socio-economic and cultural dimensions.

• The RISE scheme will promote international and inter-sector collaboration through research and innovation staff exchanges, and sharing of knowledge and ideas from research to market (and vice-versa) for the advancement of science and the development of innovation.

• RISE involves organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors (in particular SMEs), based in Europe (EU Member States and Associated Countries) and outside Europe (third countries).

• Support is provided for the development of partnerships in the form of joint research and innovation activities between the participants. This is aimed at knowledge sharing via international as well as inter-sectoral mobility, based on two-way secondments of research and innovation staff (exchanges) with an in-built return mechanism.

• Exchanges can be for both early-stage and experienced researchers' levels and can also include administrative, managerial and technical staff supporting the research and innovation activities of the proposal.

ERC – Starting GrantSummary: Globally 1 in 100 children are born with significant congenital heart defects (CHD), representing either new genetic mutations or epigenetic insults that alter cardiac morphogenesis in utero. Embryonic CV systems dynamically regulate structure and function over very short time periods throughout morphogenesis and that biomechanical loading conditions within the heart and great-vessels alter morphogenesis and gene expression. This proposal has structured around a common goal of developing a comprehensive and predictive understanding of the biomechanics and regulation of great-vessel development and its plasticity in response to clinically relevant epigenetic changes in loading conditions. Biomechanical regulation of vascular morphogenesis, including potential aortic arch (AA) reversibility or plasticity after epigenetic events relevant to human CHD are investigated using multimodal experiments in the chick embryo that investigate normal AA growth and remodelling, microsurgical instrumentation that alter ventricular and vascular blood flow loading during critical periods in AA morphogenesis. WP 1 establishes our novel optimization framework, incorporates basic input/output in vivo data sets, and validates. In WP 2 and 3 the numerical models for perturbed biomechanical environment and incorporate new objective functions that have in vivo structural data inputs and predict changes in structure and function. WP 4 incorporates candidate genes and pathways during normal and experimentally altered AA morphogenesis. This proposal develops and validates the first in vivo morphomechanics-integrated three-dimensional mathematical models of AA growth and remodelling that can predict normal growth patterns and abnormal vascular adaptations common in CHD. Multidisciplinary application of bioengineering principles to CHD is likely to provide novel insights and paradigms towards our long-term goal of optimizing CHD interventions, outcomes, and the potential for preventive strategies.
