No. 18 Florida State in the opening round. However, the Seminoles shutout the Tigers 4-0 to end their dual season with an overall mark of 11-13.

Chifcheiva, Haney and Chappell then set their sights towards the NCAA Individual Championships as Chifchieva entered the tourney ranked No. 5, and Haney ranked No. 28 in the nation. The doubles tandem of Chappell and Haney were seeded 12th in the doubles bracket.

In singles play, Haney defeated No. 23 Maria Sanchez of USC 6-3, 6-4 while Chifchieva was upset in round one action by Arizona freshman Natasha Marks, 6-4, 6-4. In round two, Haney was defeated 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 by Pac-10 Player of the Year, Hilary Barte.

In doubles action, Haney and Chappell were defeated by No. 7 Jana Juracova and Mari Andersson of Cal in a tightly contested 7-6 (1), 6-3 opening round loss.

Chifchieva and Haney wrapped up the 2009 season with a combined singles record of 33-11, while Haney and Chappell went 10-4 in doubles play.

The fall season opened up at the Stony Brook Classic, where Haney began her season a high note as she

captured the Flight A singles bracket after defeating teammate Melissa Koning.

The following week, Chifchieva, Haney and Koning played in the prestigious Rivera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. The weekend started out with Haney and Koning, ranked No. 4 in the country at the time, defeating No. 9 Anna Sydorska and Macall Harkins of TCU 8-5 in the fi rst round. In singles action, the ninth-ranked Chifchieva defeated No. 16 Anastasia Pethukhova of Fresno St. 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

On day two of the tournament, Chifchieva knocked off No. 72 Laura Gioia of Furman in the second round, and then defeated the nation’s second-ranked player, Clemson’s Ana Mijackika in a thriller, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) to advance to the Championship match of the most grueling tournament in the nation. In the championship match, Chifchieva was narrowly defeated by No. 20 Kelcy McKenna of Arizona St. 6-3, 6-4 to take home Runner-Up honors.

The next big fall event for the Tigers was the ITA Southern Regional tournament in Athens, Georgia. Melissa Koning highlighted play for Auburn, advancing to the semifi nals of the tournament by virtue of wins over Ole Miss’ Kristi Boxx and Florida’s Megan Alexander before falling to Florida’s Marritt Boonstra, 6-2, 6-0.

The Tigers wrapped up the regular season with a No. 31 national ranking and an 11-11 overall mark to go along with a 3-7 SEC ledger.
