The Beavers come into the NSIC North clash 4-1 overall, 3-1 in NSIC play and sit atop the division standings at 2-0. Although the Huskies are 2-3 overall and 2-2 in NSIC play, the team hung a 57-10 victory on Upper Iowa last weekend and come into the match up tied with Minne- sota Duluth at 1-0 in divisional play. With a division title bid still on the line, this week’s game may be a turning point for each team. THE SERIES Although the BSU and SCSU series has been around since 1927, today’s game marks just the second match up in the last 28 years. After meeting on a regular basis from 1950 to 1981 as members of the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC), the Beavers and Huskies put their rivalry on the shelf for 27 years only to be rekindled Oct. 4, 2008 as conference foes once again, this time as members of the newly-expanded NSIC. The Huskies come into the contest owning a 33-16-3 advantage in the series and have won the last five meetings between the teams. BSU is 11-14 versus SCSU on its home turf and is in search of its first win over the Huskies at Chet Anderson Stadium since Oct. 8, 1977. THE COACHES Bemidji State: Jeff Tesch is in his 14th season roaming the sidelines at Bemidji State. He has posted an overall record of 87-58 (.600), which includes a 65-43 (.603) mark in NSIC tilts and a 0-1 record versus St. Cloud State. In 14 seasons, Tesch has established BSU standards for games coached (145), victories (87), career winning percentage (.600) and conference wins (65). Prior to his tenure at BSU, Tesch spent 12 years as an assistant at North Dakota, two on the staff of Central Missouri and one season at Montana State. St. Cloud State: Scott Underwood is in his second season at the helm of the Huskies’ football program. The 12th head coach in the school’s history, Underwood has been a member of the SCSU coaching staff since 2001, serving as the team’s defensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator/defensive backs coach prior to taking his current post. In addition to his experience at St. Cloud State, his coaching resume includes four seasons at then NCAA Division II perennial power North Dakota, where he was a part of a pair of NCAA playoff teams, a four-year stint at University of Sioux Falls, where he helped the team win the NAIA D-II national championship in 1996, and five years as a defensive secondary coach at Augustana College. THE PROGRAM Bemidji State’s all-time record is 305-392-24 (.436) dating back to 1926, which includes a 168-242-9 (.409) mark in NSIC play. The Beavers own five conference titles (1947, 50, 57, 59 and 2006) and count the 2006 Mineral Water Bowl as their first post-season appearance. Under the direction of Tesch, BSU has posted winning records in 10 of the last 11 years and have registered seven consecutive winning home campaigns. 2009 SCHEDULE Aug. 27 Minot (N.D.) 2009 BemIdjI State vS. NortherN State: team ComparISoN

the lINe oN the lINeSBemidji State’s offensive line may be young, but returning four of five starters from the 2008 line, there is no lack of experience. Davis Mickelson, Jordan Anderson, Chad Whaley and Cory Immerman each started all 11 games a year ago and have jumped in along with newcomers Brett DeLange and Alon-zo Melton to provide a the push up front to power the BSU running game to an average of 222 yards per game, which is good for second in the NSIC. On the defensive front, BSU returns all three starters from a year ago, including 2008 Second-Team All-NSIC Rob Wills, who currently ranks third on the team with 23 tackles (eight-solo), 4.5 tackles for loss a 1.5 sacks and two interceptions with one returned for a touchdown.

SeeINg red zoNeAfter a season in which, BSU ventured inside it opponents’ 20 yard line 35 times, and scored on 22 occasions (.629 with 20 coming by way of TDs), the Beavers have opened the 2009 season scoring on 21 of the 22 times (95-percent) they’ve entered the redzone with 17 of 22 coming by way of TDs (77-percent).

home CookIN’The Beavers enter this weekend having won each of their last seven home games and 13 of the last 15. Since Jeff Tesch took the helm of the BSU football program prior to the 1996 season, the Beavers have post-ed a 47-18 overall record with a 37-12 mark in NSIC play at “The Chet.” Tesch and the Beavers are riding a wave of seven consec-utive winning seasons on their home turf, which includes undefeated home slates in 1998 (4-0), 2000 (5-0) and 2005 (4-0)

CapItalIzINg oN opportUNItIeSIn 2008, the Beavers forced 25 turnovers, but didn’t always take advantage of those opportunities--BSU failed to record a single point off of a takeaway in its six losses. However, the team has gotten off on the right foot in 2009 turning five of its nine take-a-ways into points, which includes a Sept. 26 game versus Northern State in which it turned a fumble and a turnover into six points.

BSU IN the top 15Bemidji State enters this week’s contest ranked among NCAA Division II’s top 15 in three statistical categories. The Beavers are 10th in the country and second in the NSIC in rushing yards allowed per game (71.4), 10th in rushing yardage per game (237.2) and are 15th in the nation and second in comparison to their NSIC counterparts in net punting yardage (38.3).

keepINg the Bar hIgh...It may be just five games into the 2009 campaign, but the Beavers are already on pace for one of their most productive scoring campaigns of all time. The team is averaging 37.0 points per game. Only two times in BSU’s 83-year history has it scored for a better average over the course of a season. The 2004 team cur-rently holds the BSU single-season scoring mark after putting up 422 points in 11 games for a 38.4 points per game average. With 185 points this season, BSU has already piled up more points in five games than it did in 21 complete seasons since 1970.

SCorINg Streak StretChed to 126With 42 points versus Northern State Sept. 26, the Beavers have now scored in 126 consecutive games. The last time BSU was held without a single point was Nov. 8, 1997 when Minnesota Duluth defeated BSU 41-0.

rUNNINg for yoUr lIfe...In 2009, 17 of BSU’s 23 offensive touchdowns have come on the ground (73.9-percent) marking the first time since the 2004 season that the Beavers have rushed for more touchdowns than they passed. The last time BSU’s offensive attack was even remotely this run-heavy dates back to the 1995 sea-son, during which the Beavers rushed for 13 touchdowns, while passing for just five (72.2-percent) in 10 games.

I’ll take 2 IN the pICk SIxThe Beavers have intercepted thee passes this season and two have been returned the distance for a touchdown. Since 1985, only four BSU teams have turned more interceptions into touchdowns. In 2003, the team picked off 23 passes and returned four for scores, while in 1996, 2005, 2006 three TDs were the result of INTs.

laSt tIme theSe teamS metSt. Cloud State jumped out to a 21-0, first-quarter lead and would not look back as it cruised to a 48-14 victory over Bemidji State when these teams met Oct. 4, 2008 at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn. The Beavers turned the ball over five times which led to 24 points for SCSU as it rolled up 420 yards of total of-fense, including 259 on the ground. Five Huskies ran for more than 20 yards, led by Brandon Geiss who scampered for 76 yards and touchdown. Mitch Watkins added 161 yards through the air on 14-of-24 and connected on three TD passes. For the Beavers, Derek Edholm paced the team in on the ground and in the air. He posted a season-best 66 yards on eight carries, which included the longest run of the season for BSU--50 yards. He also completed nine-of-20 pass attempts for 62 yards and a touchdown strike to George Kadlec. Wide out Cameron Abram accounted for BSU’s other touchdown taking one of his seven rushing attempts to the end zone. Ball hogSThis season Bemidji State has dominated time of possession in each of its five games. In 300 minutes of play, the Beavers have had the ball in their posses-sion for 171:03--that leaves just 128:57 for their opponents. On average BSU has held the ball for 34:30 per game to sit second the NSIC.

ItS BeeN a loNg tIme ComINg...Granted, the Beavers and Huskies have met on the gridiron on just one occa-sion since 1982, but the last time the Beavers defeated the Huskies was Oct. 8, 1977. The win came seven days before the birth of assistant coach Eric Medberry and head coach Jeff Tesch was an all-conference tight end for MSU Moorhead-then Moorhead State. keep ‘em UNder 100The Bemidji State defense has been hard on opposing rushing attacks this season. Despite allowing 114 yards versus Minnesota State, the Beavers have managed to keep their opponents to an average of just 71.3 yards per game to rank 10th in all of NCAA Division II. In games that BSU has stymied their opposition to 100 or fewer yards on the ground, the Beavers are a perfect 4-0. Since 1999 BSU is 36-7 when allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards.

It begins in early October with the turning of the fall leaves. Students, proud alumni and families from surrounding communities file into a small, picturesque stadium on the shore of Lake Bemidji with fevered expectations for the battles to come. Through the autumn combat, those watchful souls have been blessed to witness an unprecedent-ed era of success. All-America honorees. School records falling by the wayside with an almost dazzling regularity. A stadium where vic-tories occurred with the frequency of a bigfoot sighting just a few short years ago now hosts men with annual dreams of championship and glory. It’s an era of success and excitement that once might have seemed akin to the Christmas fantasies of youth. But under the mas-terful guidance of 14th-year head coach Jeff Tesch, the Bemidji State football program has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis and gone from annual doormat to title contender. Tesch has posted a 87-58 record at BSU and led the Beavers to a school-record streak of 10 consecutive winning seasons from 1998-2007. During that historic streak he posted four of the five eight-win seasons for a program now in its 84th season of competition. He is the only coach in Bemidji State history to oversee back-to-back eight-win seasons, and his 2000 and 2006 teams set matching school records of nine wins. Tesch’s success at BSU has been remarkable. Upon being named BSU’s 15th field general in May 1996, he inherited a program which had won just 16 games in its previous eight seasons, suffering losing streaks of nine, 11 and 18 games in that time. Today, his 87 wins rep-resent nearly 28 percent of the program’s all-time victories. He has averaged six wins a season at a program which in 70 years prior to his arrival averaged barely three victories each fall. In fact, Tesch’s 87 wins in 14 years surpass the number of victories garnered by the Be-midji State program in the 29 full seasons prior to his arrival — 81. Tesch has further cemented his legendary status by becoming Bemidji State’s all-time leader in coaching victories. He posted his 53rd win at BSU with a 28-20 victory over Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 16, 2004, moving him past H. “Jolly” Erickson, who won 52 games during a 17-year career at BSU from 1938-54. Tesch’s growing list of achievements at Bemidji State has him amongst the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s coaching deans as well. A two-time NSIC Coach of the Year now in his 13th season at the Bemidji State helm, Tesch is the second-longest ten-ured coach in the conference, trailing only Winona State’s Tom Saw-yer who enters his 15th year with the Warriors. Before taking over at BSU, Tesch spent 11 years as an assistant for annual NCAA Division II playoff contender North Dakota. There, he assumed assistant head coaching duties in 1995. The Fighting Sioux captured at least a share of the North Central Conference champion-ship three consecutive seasons before Tesch’s departure in 1996. In addition to coaching duties, Tesch helped the Sioux achieve a 92 percent graduation rate while serving as academic advisor. Prior to his UND appointment, Tesch spent one year as an as-sistant at Montana State, followed by a two-year stint as offensive coordinator at Central Missouri State. A graduate of Moorhead State (Minn.) University who was a free-agent signee with the Atlanta Falcons, Tesch was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in the spring of 1998. In 1977, Tesch was the NCAA Division II receiving champion and still holds Dragon single-game and single-season records for receptions. In 29 years of coaching, Tesch has produced 12 All-America se-lections and five NFL draft picks. Jeff and his wife Susan have two children — daughter Tara and son Vincent.
