In This Issue:

UNPAID HOA DUES NOTICE If you have not yet paid your HOA dues, your family will be restricted from using the pool and other community facilities until paid in full. The amount to remit for HOA dues with late fee is now $251. Mail payments, with your lot number on the memo line of your check, along with the dues invoice to: CHHA, PO Box 710238, Oak Hill, VA 20171.

The picnic tables at the playground need to have their legs/frame scraped, primed and painted. This would be a good service pro-ject. CHHA will provide paint. Contact Larry Miller at (703) 707-0891.

The POOL is OPEN! Be sure to bring an updated photo of fam-ily members during the first two weeks that the pool is open for the rolodex file. Make sure that all household members are informed of the pool rules, especially young adults who may be of age to attend the pool alone this year. Also, be sure

that EVERYONE treats the lifeguards with respect. They are there to enforce our rules and to make sure that every-one stays safe. See pages 6-9 for complete pool rules.

Summer & Vacation Reminders Our maximum speed limit is 25 mph. Stop signs are not optional. Come to a full stop. Yield to pedestrians. Children will be out of school—be alert! When planning parties, make sure that you are con-

siderate of your neighbors with respect to noise lev-els during the evening hours (there is a noise ordi-nance). You are responsible for your guests’ compli-ance. Report suspicious persons or activity to the police

at (703) 691-2131. Make sure to wear sunscreen when you’ll be outside

for any length of time, including when doing yard-work, playing sports, etc. Make sure to wear bug spray when outdoors as well. Stay hydrated—drink plenty of water or sports drinks

during the summer months, especially before and during prolonged activity. Be sure to practice safe food handling practices when

planning a picnic or party. When on vacation, make it seem like you are home.

Have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers. Leave a phone number with a trusting neighbor

where you can be reached. Don’t forget to do regular maintenance on your auto-

mobile, not only for safety sake, but to improve your gas mileage. Check your tire pressure monthly, too. Mow your lawn before your vacation, and/or arrange

for someone to mow while you are gone. Set light timers for both inside and outside lights. Make sure all doors and windows are locked before

leaving for vacation. Make sure ladders are stored in your garage or

chained/locked to a fixed structure to prevent use in a burglary.

COMMUNITY NOTICESCOMMUNITY NOTICESCOMMUNITY NOTICES ^ Fairfax County Police are noticing larceny/vehicle

tampering from autos where GPS units are being sto-len. Secure and lock up your belongings.

^ Per CHHA Article VI, Section 11, commercial vehi-cles are NOT permitted in our neighborhood, and are subject to action by the Board.

^ Per our 2001 ACC Guidelines and Standards, Section 5.5, “The dumping of lawn clippings and debris on common area or open lawn area is prohibited.” Of-fenders are subject to action by the Board, including possible fees.

^ Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up their ani-mal's excrement (poop) on both private properties and our common areas. It’s the law and just the right thing to do.

^ When planning landscaping or home improvements that involve digging on your property, first call Miss Utility by dialing 811 or (800) 552-7001. Also, be sure to submit the ACC Exterior Alteration Applica-tion prior to beginning your work, which can be found at www.chha.org/ACCApplication.pdf.

^ Under Fairfax County Ordinance, Section 82-9-6 (a), “It shall be unlawful for any person to play in or on a street or highway, other than upon the sidewalks thereof.” This also applies to basketball hoops set up on curbsides for children to play in the street.

^ For help in starting or maintaining a healthier life-style, go to the American Heart Association’s website at www.americanheart.org/start for health and fitness tools and ideas. Good luck!

Floris United Methodist Church Pre-school has Teacher and Assistant Teacher positions available for the 2007-2008 school year. Anyone interested in applying please contact Pam White at 703-793-0749 or [email protected].

Because a quorum was not met at the last scheduled Board

meeting, a meeting could not be held. Hence, no Board min-

utes to report.

To Report Street Lights that are out call Dominion Virginia Power at (888) 667-3000.

Summer Road SafetySummer Road SafetySummer Road Safety

Take a moment to review some road rules that you may be unaware of, or have just forgotten. Make sure all drivers and pedestrians in your house are fa-miliar with the rules.

E Motorists are required to yield to pedestri-ans at any clearly marked crosswalk or any intersec-tion where the maximum legal speed is 35 miles per hour or less.

Pedestrians are required to cross roadways at marked crosswalks or at intersections, may not enter roadways without regard to approaching traffic, and may not cross roadways against high-way crossing signs. Pedestrians are only permitted to travel on a roadway when there is no sidewalk available, using the extreme left side and maintain-ing caution and awareness of oncoming vehicular traffic.

$ Bicyclists should always ride with traffic, not against it! Use hand signals to show your inten-tions, and be alert. Additional bicycle rules and in-formation can be found at Commuter Connections of the Metro Washington area at www.mwcog.org/commuter/Bdy-bike3.html.

! You must be 16 years of age to operate a moped, motorized scooter, or motorized bike or “pocket” bike. All drivers must have identification that includes their name, address, and date of birth. Parents can obtain ID cards at the DMV for children under 15 years of age for documentation. Operators and passengers must wear approved protective hel-mets and eye protection at all times.

Summer Health and Safety Health information on these and other topics can be found at both the Virginia and Fairfax Health Depart-ment websites at www.vdh.virginia.gov/index/htm and www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd, respectively.

LYME DISEASE—Diagnosis of Lyme Disease is on the rise, and is now considered a serious public health issue in Fairfax County. Parents need to make sure children use age-appropriate insect repellents, dress properly, and check bodies for ticks and nymphs after being outdoors.

WEST NILE VIRUS—Transmitted by mosquitoes, it is important to dress appropriately and wear insect repellent to prevent contracting the West Nile Virus. It is also im-portant to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed, or use products such as Mosquito Dunks® to kill their larvae in water you cannot empty.

RABIES—Whereas dogs used to be the most common carriers of rabies, wildlife is now the main transmitter of the disease, with raccoons, foxes, skunks, and stray or feral cats heading the list.

Virginia reported 637 confirmed cases of rabies in 2006, compared to 495 cases in 2005. According to a recent article in the Washington Post, tests conducted from January to October 2006 found 25 of 52 raccoons tested positive for rabies, 5 of 84 cats were positive, and only 2 of 192 bats had the virus. Many post-exposure rabies shots were given to people who were trying to aid injured animals, or feeding wild or stray animals. Inform your children not to approach loose or wild animals, domestic or wild.

SUN PROTECTION—Be sure to use sunscreen when spending time outdoors. Also, replace sun protection products each year, as their efficacy decreases.

CHILD CARE—Plan ahead for child care during the summer. Fairfax County has guidelines for child supervi-sion at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dfs/childrenyouth/homealone.htm or (703) 324-7400.
