The way a child sees impactsevery aspect of his or herlife – their social activities,

their ability to play sports, andtheir school work.

That’s why the doctors at theVisionary Eye Care Center aretaking the time to inform youabout the importance of early eyeexaminations. In addition theyare offering a $50 eyeevaluation for childrenup to age 12. That’s halfthe price of the normalexamination cost.

Kentucky is one ofonly three states thatrequire eye examina-tions at the start ofschool. Not only is thismandatory, but also amuch needed assess-ment in order to catchand correct amblyopiaor lazy eye, especiallyfor children under age6.

Amblyopia is an eye problemthat causes poor vision in chil-dren. The problem begins whenthe pathways of vision in thebrain don’t grow strong enough. These pathways are like roads, carrying vision messages fromthe eye to the brain. The vision

pathways in the brain mustbecome strong early. The first fewyears of life are the most impor-tant for eyesight.

About 5 percent of childrenhave amblyopia. After a child is 8to 10, the brain’s vision system iscomplete. If the amblyopia hasn’tbeen treated by this age, the childwill have poor vision for life. In

fact, 2 to 4 percent of the popula-tion has amblyopia and the badeye can’t be corrected.

There are several causes ofamblyopia and the treatmentmust match the problem. Glassesor contact lenses fix some prob-lems. Surgery may be needed forcataracts, droopy eyelids orcrossed eyes.

After the cause of the ambly-opia is determined, the child willneed to use the weaker eye mostof the time, so it will get stronger. To make the child use the weakereye, a patch can be put over thestronger eye.

Sometimes, eye drops or spe-cial glasses are used to blur thevision in the stronger eye. The

treatment usually lasts untilvision is normal, or until visionstops getting better. For mostchildren, this takes severalweeks.

“If vision problems aren’t cor-rected, all areas of the child’sdevelopment will suffer,”explains Dr. Norm Sawyer. “Ifyou can’t lift the weight you quit,

the same applies to the eye. Ifyou can’t focus, like on schoolwork, you’re not going to workvery hard and you’re going to bedistracted by other things.”

Early eye examinations canhelp your child avoid these diffi-culties.

For more information callVisionary Eye Care Center at 578-

0393. Visionary Eye Care Centeris a new private office located at2220 Grandview Drive in FortMitchell. The kind staff is patient-focused and will work diligentlywith you to correct vision prob-lems. They also accept a varietyof insurance.

Swimming pools andhot tubs are justplain fun, but many

people overlook thehealth benefits. Just aboutanyone, regardless of ageor physical condition, cangain health benefits fromswimming.

Swimming as a regularform of exercise can cutmales’ risk of death by 50percent as compared torunners, walkers andthose with a sedentarylifestyle, according to arecent study by Dr. Steven

N. Blair of the ArnoldSchool for Public Healthat the University of SouthCarolina. Blair found sim-ilar health and fitness ben-efits in an earlier study forwomen as well.

Regular laps in thepool can help tone themuscles in your entirebody, lower blood pres-sure, increase circulationand raise metabolism andendurance. Becausehumans weigh less in thewater, people who can’tparticipate in other forms

of exercise because ofinjuries or excess weightcan swim safely. Andswimming is a fun andinteresting workout thatkeeps people coming backfor more.

And, after a long ses-sion in the pool, or a longday at work, what couldbe better than time spentrelaxing in a hot tub?

The steamy, swirlingwaters of a hot tub pro-vide a great place toloosen up and even tosocialize, but can also

lower your blood pressureand decrease joint painand swelling.

Additionally, the com-bination of heat, buoyan-cy and massage in a hottub can provide therapeu-tic benefits for those witharthritis, diabetes, insom-nia and more.

A recent study super-vised by the Foundationfor Physical Therapy andfunded in part by the HotTub Council of theAssociation of Pool andSpa Professionals found

significant recuperativebenefits for knee replace-ment patients who per-formed their physicaltherapy in warm water.

When you make aninvestment in a homepool or hot tub, you’re notonly potentially increasingthe value of your homeand making your housethe most popular on theblock, you’re increasingthe length and quality ofyour life.

Tony Strinko ofIndependence hadendured shoulder

and neck pain as well asnumbness in his little fin-ger for about three years.Visits to other doctorsprovided mild to moder-ate success, but pain reliefwas always temporary.

Strinko researched cer-vical herniated disc on theInternet, and realized thatwhat he needed was adoctor who could do non-surgical spinal decom-pression.

He called theChiropractic Rehab Centeron Buttermilk Pike andasked if Dr. Gary Callioniperformed spinal decom-pression.

“Dr. Callioni exceededmy expectations,” Strinkosays. “He has the knowl-edge and the equipmentto treat my condition, andafter five weeks, I am pain

free.”When a cervical or

lumbar disc is herniatedor ruptured, it may createpressure against one ormore of the spinal nerveswhich can cause pain, weakness or numbness inthe neck, arms, hands, back and legs. Spinal

decompression stops painby using negative pres-sure to create a vacuumthat pulls the painful discback where it belongs.

“Spinal decompressionis rapidly becoming oneof the leading alternativesto surgery for the condi-tions of herniated, rup-tured, or degenerativediscs,” says Dr. Callioni.“Tony realized that thiswas the alternative hewanted and it is workingfor him. Not all people aregood candidates for thistreatment, but Tony is.”

Dr. Callioni utilizes thisnew technology to treatchronic neck and backpain. This gives patientsdifferent treatmentoptions besides pills, injections and surgery.

Fabulous floorsFreshening floors

doesn’t have to be anexpensive or time-con-suming task.

Carpets will benefitfrom a simple deepcleaning – somethingyou should be doingseasonally anyway to

preserve their beauty andextend their usable lives.

For tile, stone or hard-woods, follow the manufactur-er’s recommendations forcleaning and maintenance andmake the process part of yourseasonal cleaning routine.

Another great way to dressup floors, either indoors or out,is to add a splash of color withan area rug.

No wall flowersWalls are the largest space

element in your room decor, and brightening them for theseason can be as easy as

switching out the artwork oradding a fresh coat of paint.

Start with a neutral wallshade and add color with wallart that fits your mood, tasteand the season for whichyou’re decorating.

Summer is also a great timeto add a decorative mirror, since drapes and windows areoften open to welcome in thesunlight and bright sky.

Adding a mirror on the wallopposite a window is a greatway to reflect sunlightthroughout the room and makea small space appear moreexpansive.

Lighten upWhile you’re reveling in the

natural light of summer, don’toverlook the importance ofusing light to create a mood forwarm weather evenings.Lighting is an essential elementthat contributes to how yourhome looks and feels, and thelight entering from outdoors

changes with the season andtime of day.

With longer days and moresun in summer, you may findyou need synthetic light lessfor visibility and more forambiance.

Summer is a great time toadd dimmers to a dining roomor bedroom, add an eye-catch-ing overhead fixture, or givebright lights a break in favor ofsubtly placed table or floorlamps.

Outdoor lifestyleDon’t forget that the same

design principles you use tocreate a wonderful indoor envi-ronment can apply outdoors aswell. Update your outdoorspaces with area rugs designedfor beauty and durability. Addaccent lighting such as energy-efficient solar lights to set themood for evening and nightgatherings.
