When the Civil War occurred

The civil war started on April 12, 1861 with the battle of fort Sumter.

The civil war ended officially on June 23, 1865 with the battle of Appomattox courthouse.

second Battle of Fort Fisher

January 13-15, 1865

Fort Fisher just a few miles from the town of Wilmington, North Carolina. Blockade runners supplied the fort with guns and other supplies from Bermuda, the Bahamas, and great Britain.

union – major general Alfred Terry commanding 9,000 troops/ and rear admiral David d. Porter commanding 60 navel ships.

Confederate- major general W.h.c whiting commanding 1,900 troops/ Robert f. Hoke commanding 6,400 troops just north of the fort.

The reason for the battle is because it was the confederates last port on the east coast.

April 9, 1865 Appomattox county, Virginia union- general Ulysses s. Grant Confederate- general Robert e. Lee Casualties: union – 164/ confederate-

500, 27,800 surrendered. The reason for the battle Early on April 9, the remnants of

John Broun Gordon’s corps and Fitzhugh Lee’s cavalry formed line of battle at Appomattox Court House. Gen. Robert E. Lee determined to make one last attempt to escape the closing Unions grasp and reach his supplies at Lynchburg. At dawn the Confederates advanced, initially gaining ground against Sheridan’s cavalry. The arrival of Union infantry however, stopped the advance in its tracks. Lee’s army was now surrounded on three sides. Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9. This was the final engagement of the war in Virginia.

How did the civil war effect Americas future ?

I think that its good that the union won because of the way that slaves were treated and the way that they were enslaved against there will. I think that it was in the best interest for everyone that the union won because slavery would still be here if the union would have lost and things would have only gotten worse for slaves.
