Big Idea
MissionVisitors will explore the contradiction between the depiction of car races and chases in film and the laws of physics that govern those events in reality.
Racing sports-cars from the Simeone Foundation collection will be utilized to convey the technical engineering of automobiles in real-life and the evocative power of automobile aesthetics in film.
Car chases in film often disobey the laws of physics.

Visitor Goals
Team GoalsThis exhibition will both exploit the beauty and technical innovation embodied in select pieces from the Simeone Foundation collection, as well as the dynamism of automobiles in cinema, in order to make physics exciting.
This exhibition will be accessible for people with various learning styles through a broad array of educational tactics including compelling visuals, interactive exhibits, and multiple tiers of information to encourage inquiry and problem-solving
This exhibition will interweave the juxtaposition of fantasy and reality with the overarching theme of physics.
Visitors will understand how the laws of physics apply to cars in real life and how films sometimes break those laws.
Visitors to this exhibition will gain an increased awareness of automobile safety.
Visitors will discover how filmmakers create the illusion of impossiblefeats by exploiting the laws of physics.
Choice automobiles from the Simone Foundation collection will illustrate to visitors the complex set of technological systems that allow racing sports cars to effectively exploit the laws of physics, as well as the aesthetic qualities that lead people to believe they can break those laws in film.

Visitor Objectives
Team Objectives
Visitors will have the knowledge to describe 3 key physics terms, such as friction, force, and work.
Visitors will be able to identify two common film tricks used in chase scenes. Examples include putting bleach on tires to create smoke as well as the use of hidden equipment.
Visitors will be able to articulate some of the potential real- lifeconsequences of attempting to perform car stunts that are seen in films.
The exhibition will provide opportunities for social interaction between visitors by featuring multi-user interactives and experiences.
The exhibition will draw increased numbers of 8th to 12th graders to the museum by specifically inviting local schools and interest groups to the exhibition and to the associated program events. This demographic will also be targeted through report-card reward incentives, and through IMAX screenings of films involving car chases and races concluding with discussions of the physics involved.
The exhibition will address national and Pennsylvania state standards for science education by combining science subject material with the excitement and danger of fast cars.
Automobiles will be utilized to illustrate the relationship between the powerful appearance of a car and its sensationalized ability.
The exhibit will include images and footage from a number of cinematic car chases as well as video from real-life police chases to further illustrate the contradictions between automotive fantasy and reality.

Voice
GestaltThe exhibition creates a vibrant environment with rich colors and starkcontrasts influenced by film noir design aesthetics. Cars will be arranged at dramaticangles so visitors can witness the cars positioned as if they are defying gravity.Dynamic interactives will be used to convey key concepts of physics.
The voice of our exhibition is an accessible, friendly science, filmmaking and technology expert who will encourage visitor inquiry. The voice will explain scientific terms and concepts in a readily accessible conversational manner. The visitor will be familiar with the voice because it will use appropriate terminology and text to inform them, yet its tone will remain open and approachable.

Target Audience
Visitor Walk-aways
Our target audience is adolescents in 8th through 12th grade (13-17 year-olds) who will visit the exhibition via school groups, drivers education programs, science clubs/groups, and scouts. This audience will be presented with the numerous impacts of physics that lie far beyond the classroom and that reach into their daily lives, popular entertainment, and potential careers. An example of a group that might be interested in the exhibition is the Expanding Your Horizons Network, an organization that encourages girls involvement in math and science to encourage them to pursue further scientific knowledge and science-oriented careers. Our secondary audiences are college students, adults, and families with younger school-aged children, which will be addressed in the marketing strategies.
Physics is cool!
People who build cars are really smart.
