Sustainable flexible development through united bridge building

Once upon a time not so long ago! A little fledgling HU-bird, a creature almost invisible unless you arelooking, embarked on a quest to find the truth. He made a living by busking wherever he went. He lefthis native England for the continent and onwards, making his way east on his adventures he had manyexperiences which would change his outlook forever! He met many other birds from all over Theyshared their stories and reasoned together in the pursuit of the truth realizing often that though from allover the world they sought the same thing: a way to serve. He journeyed far and wide searching, learning, and sharing with other like-minded creators and facilitators. In this way the Hu-Bird acquireda taste for Art, Poetry, Music and Trade and these became both his tools and his vehicle for

expression as well a means to keep travelling. He had many wonderful experiences, sometimes as afollower, sometimes as a guide but always as a willing traveller on hi circumambulation of the globe.Eventually and inevitably he realised that the truth he searched for out there was actually within himthe whole time! That day in Africa, as he stood on the edge of the Atlantic ocean in Dara-a-Sarolooking west, he realised he was a Hu-Man and no longer a Hu-bird: he didnt need wings anymoresince he had hands and feet and a heart. He decided to return to his beloved England and set-up atrading post for all fellow travellers. He called this the HU Gallery.

Until May 2011 eleven we were utilising the old c.1850 Wesleyan friends meeting house andencouraging enterprise and talent to become involved. Encouraging commercial and cultural exchangebetween different ethnic communities thus promoting trust and understanding. A bridge of mutual

interests and objectives and the formation of a community interest company.

The mission statement of the Hu-(Man)Gallery

Is to relief suffering in the world through fostering a clearer understanding of the universal nature of the

human being and of human culture. To explore together the common reality which lives and shines through all forms of cultural expression.

To paraphrase the 12th Century Spanish teacher and philosopher Muhydin Ibn ArabiWisdom lies in being able to see through the veil of differences to that that is universally human in allof us at which point the differences become a cause for celebration for the variety of uniqueness ofexpression in each and every one of us.

    Unity Uniqueness Variety

The Hu-Gallery is an artistic and social initiative that over the last 8 years was located in the Burnleyarea and at the present operates in Manchester. It deliberately strives to go beyond the usual boundaries of non-communication that exist withinbetween the different communities in order to discover together a common platform for moving into thefuture.

It recognises three primary needs of all humans

    Cultural

    Social Economic

And wishes to facilitate positive and constructive change in all three areas of the human life locally andthroughout its network.

In all that we do, we seek to work with people who have flexible innovative, sustainable and replicable, economically viable solutions that meet human needs in the UK and the rest of the world. We will remain practical and focused whilst operating from a Shared Human Values standpoint.

We will and do utilise our limited resources. We can work with an optimum number of partners, in ourown facilities up to the limits of our space. Other units may become available as part of the plansupported by grants and entrepreneurial input. In this way we believe that we can make our uniquecontribution to the work of key individuals, organisations and companies who in their work impact uponmany of the worlds most disadvantaged people.

Each individual /organisation supported must fulfil these three criteria in their application:

By Innovation we mean that they are seeking to develop and deliver a new approach or model whichis new/better than what currently exists/reaches an unmet need. We want to support work, which canbe:

Replicated (whether new or step-change), thus reaching and impacting on many more people andraising standards in the particular sector. Finally

Sustainability is essential. There is little/no point in using resources, raising expectations and working

hard to develop an idea that no one will fund when the Hu-(Man) gallery funding ends.

We seek to identify national or international policy shifts in funding that may pick up work that we fundin the early proving stages with our support. Alternatively it may be the organisation will becomefinancially self-sustaining by sales of its product/services

    Incubating Hu Men

HU(Man)Gallery will secure/offer seed corn finance to establish new community interest companies increative innovative enterprise activities that directly advance the idea of shared human values and aimto relieve sickness, poverty or distress in any part of the world. Such activities should be capable of

wide scale replication economically viable and address the root causes or contexts of the issuesaddressed. The companies should be capable of making a significant and flexibly sustainable nationaor international social impact.

The Hu (Man) Gallery looks for and identifies visionary Champions with the capability, competence, passion and practical ability to translate and actualise vision into reality.

The Hu (Man) Gallery will be the major core founder of new companies (CiC) working with otherfunding partners where appropriate. We are committed to ensuring the long-term viability of acompany and to fully sharing the risk of success or failure. This demands a disciplined but flexibleapproach discipline to ensure a clear exit strategy with measurable benchmarked outcomes en

route-both in terms of the company or individuals overall development and its social impact.Flexibility to recognise that developing a sustainable organisation/company of quality / robustness maynot be achieved in two three years and that initial plan may need to be reviewed in the light ofcircumstances.

Together with finance the Hu-(Man) Gallery provides a significant role in the governance (developinginformation and quality systems and helping with implementation in order to facilitate continuousimprovement activities) of embryonic organisations / companies Through Guardian Angels mentoring Trustee representation on the new board and through involvement of the Hun GalleryDirector in the nurturing/development of the organisation company. This demands that the Hun (Man)

Gallery Trustee board has a pool of skills and experience of sufficient breadth to match therequirements of a diverse portfolio of organisations and that the Director of the Hun (Man) Gallery isappropriately qualified, experienced and versatile.

The Hu(Man) Gallery will also offer growth funding for an existing organisation seeking to make a stepchange in its activities. All the above criteria for funding a new entity will apply equally in these cases.

In making any decision on supporting on supporting a proposed organisation (new or existing)thorough assessment of its mission and potential social impact should be paramount in the minds oftrustees and directors. Continuous improvement is the goal.

The Hu-(Man) Gallery Community Arts Foundation it does not use a formalised application procedure,
