➤➤➤ The situationRecovery of energy from the organic fraction contained indomestic waste and from organic waste (biowaste, foodgone bad, organic waste from trade and industry, etc.)have become standard in waste water treatment proces-ses. The treatment technology in wet fermentation pro-cesses has greatly changed and improved in recent years.Due to the new treatment and comminution methods thatare applied also the requirements have changed whichhave to be met by downstream systems for the separati-on of coarse material (floating and settling material).Each treatment method generates a character-istic sus-pension which, in combination with the right separationsystem, ensures optimal yield in the biogas plant.

➤➤➤ The requirements The HUBER product range for the field of biowaste treat-ment offers customers both well-proven systems and thesuitable solutions for the new technologies. Depending onwhich treatment method is applied, either a well-provenHUBER system or a modified solution can be used toseparate light materials (packing materials, coarse fibres,etc.) and settling material (glass, grit). As treatment andcomminution methods are further developing, also therequired separation solutions are modified accordingly,making use of the experience gathered in the past years.

➤➤➤ Treatment stepsSubstrate treatmentThe organic waste delivered to the (bio)waste fermenta ti-on plants is pre-sorted and comminuted to obtain a sus-pension. The materials contained in the suspension whichcontribute only little or nothing at all to biogas produc-tion, or even disturb the process, are virtually completelyremoved in the following process steps.

Separation of floating and settling material withROTAMAT® plantsThe proven HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 Bioprovides combined separation of floating and settlingmaterial. The amount of coarse, settling and floatingmaterial is effectively reduced in one plant. Most of theorganics in the separated screenings (6 mm – 30 mm) areremoved already in the screening system. As options,single components of the Complete Plant can be used assolutions, such as the specially developed HUBER FineScreen ROTAMAT® Ro1 Bio with integrated screeningswashing or the HUBER Grit Trap Ro6 Bio.

Treatment of floating and light material, settling material washingThe well-proven HUBER Wash Press WAP effectivelyensures that the organics still contained in the lightmaterial are returned to the suspension. The furtherdeveloped and modified HUBER Grit Washer RoSF G4Esystems achieve a considerable weight reduction of theseparated settling material through washout andrecovery of the organics. Additional washing of theseparated materials significantly reduces of disposalcosts and returns valuable organic material to theprocess.

Separation of floating and light material with the HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® 290In some treatment processes light material is insufficient-ly removed, or intentionally kept in the suspension toavoid loss of organics during separation, with the result ofscum layers, problems in fermentation residue treatmentand reduced compost quality. Due to the low pressure lossthe STRAINPRESS® can be integrated directly into theoutlet of the fermenter or secondary fermenter toseparate the light material (1 mm – 12 mm). The HUBERSludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® is easy to integrate intopipelines, which often makes even a pump unnecessaryand provides the benefit of a closed system.

➤➤➤ Fermentation residue andprocess water treatment

Fermentation residue treatment with the HUBER Screw Press S-PRESSThe fermented biowaste sludge is treated in the energy-saving HUBER Screw Press S-PRESS/Q-PRESS® under theaddition of coagulant agents. Depending on the inputmaterial and type of preceding treatment techniques thesludge is dewatered to up to 35%.

Fermentation residue treatment with the HUBERBelt Dryer BT / HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE®To save transport costs, for easier storage, or if the dewa-tered material are fermentation residues from wasteplants, the dewatered material can be dried. The use ofthe exhaust heat ensures cost-effective sewage sludgedrying.

Process water treatment with the HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDFThe press liquor discharged from the sludge de wateringunit is often reused for mashing of the (bio)waste sus-pension. If further treatment of the process water isrequired, e. g. if heat exchangers are used, the HUBERDissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF significantly reduces thesolids load of the generated process water.
