Pannal WI
At the March meeting, Pannal ladies enjoyed a talk by Robert
Stewart, formerly a partner with a major firm of solicitors in
Bradford, who gave an entertaining glimpse of the justice
system with anecdotes from his early career in the law.
On Tuesday 9 April, Colin Anderson will give a talk about his
life in the royal kitchens, which should be a fascinating insight
into cooking for the royal family and their guests.
Visitors are always welcome for a small donation of £4,
including tea and biscuits. Do come along, we are a friendly
group of ladies and new members are always welcome.
On 26 April, Pannal WI will be holding a charity coffee morning
for St Michael’s Hospice from 10-12pm in St Robert’s Chapter
House.

Beating The Bounds
Rogation days (from the Latin rogare ‘to ask or
pray’) are the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
running up to the Thursday of Ascension Day.
During these days, ancient custom was to walk
the boundary of the Parish in procession, singing
hymns and praying for blessing on its people and
lands. Along the route, the hedges, trees, lanes, streams, rivers
and other boundary markers would be ritually beaten with birch
or willow branches; and at certain key spots a selected choirboy
would be ceremonially hoisted up, suspended upside down and
swung against a tree, embankment or wall (guaranteed to impress
at least one location on a young memory!). Periodically, the
procession would also halt for prayer or to listen to a bible
reading….perhaps at the ‘Gospel Oak’ or ‘Holy Well’, names
which have been handed down to us in our local geographies.
It is unclear how long ago it is since this ceremony was celebrated
in Pannal (if ever), but with the recent re-drawing of Parish
boundaries, this year seems a good time to undertake this
seasonal custom (choirboys will be spared!).
We plan to walk the 8-mile circuit on Bank Holiday Monday, May
27th. More details of what should be a lovely family day out will
be available shortly…..so put the date in your diaries and watch
this space.

Gardening Club
Beckwithshaw with Pannal and Burn
Bridge
We had a good audience for our first talk of the year from Peter Walker of Wack’s Wicked Plants. Who knew carnivorous plants could be so entertaining?!
On Thursday 18 April, we welcome well-known local gardening celebrity, Sarah Hopps, whose talk will be “Touring the Gardens of Britain”. As well as being a practising gardener and well known at Harrogate Flower Shows, Sarah leads nationwide garden holidays for groups, so her knowledge is extensive and we will travel widely during the course of the evening.
Our summer visits start with the May meeting, when on Thursday 16 May, we will go for a guided tour of the Allerton Waste Recovery Park. We have two tours booked, one at 10am and the second at 3pm, both for just 15 people. Of course, preference will be given to Gardening Club Members, but non-Members should let me know asap if they would like to be on a waitlist. £2 for Members, £4 for Guests for a donation to the Park’s nominated charity of the year.
Our other summer visits are as follows:
Thursday 20 June, 7pm Delves Ridge House at Darley
Thursday 18 July, 10:30am Mount St John at Felixkirk
Thursday 15 August, 7pm Japanese Garden at Tockwith
(numbers limited, preference given to Members)
Finally, to remind you that the monthly email is now being sent from our new email address by our Membership Secretary, Christine Brown, so do look out for [email protected] – it’s not spam, it’s our new identity!
We look forward to seeing you,
Gillian Dodd (Secretary), (01423) 873186 or mailto:[email protected]
PANNAL WIVES
Our next meeting takes place on Wednesday, April 17th, when Graham Berry will give us a talk with slides on “The Aftermath of W.W.1.” We meet in the Chapterhouse at 7.30pm, visitors are always welcome.
