School District Budget to Increase Tax Rate by 79 Cents by Len Lathrop As most of us look forward to both Thanksgiving and Christmas, elected members of the Hudson Budget Committee must get to work and review the proposals that both the Hudson selectmen and the Hudson school board. The budgets will be voted on during the March 2013 elections. Any changes be implemented on July 1, 2013. While it begins in 2013 it is referred to as the FY 2014 budget. The selectmen and the school board take turns each year as to who presents first to the committee, this year it is the budget committee. The Hudson School District is proposing a budget of $48,026,049 for the FY 2014 year, which according to the School district executive summary is an increase of 4.46 percent. What that means for the homeowner is an increase of 79 cents per thousand of property evaluation. After the recent reevaluation, the average home in Hudson is projected to be $250,000 in property value, which in round dollars and cents means your tax bill will go up $197.50; this is an increase of $2,049,684 over the FY 2013 budget. Any house owner can find their current evaluation on top of the bill you received Monday in the mail or can visit the town website http://www. hudsonnh.gov/docs/as/as-new-to-old-value-location.pdf. Some of the increases in the budget are have to do with the personnel area, Salaries and Benefits from previously approved contracts, which include retirement system contributions and increase in Health Insurance costs will amount to a projected $1,487,089 portion of the $2.049 million jump, with the balance begin made up as follows: Office Expenses $9,372, Supplies $108,817, Contracted Services, $177,852, Educational Resources $188,425, Furniture $11,562, Professional Development $38,959 and Equipment $111,560 adding an increase projected for Utilities of $47,485 and Debt service of $36,467. To offset some of these increases there are revenue increase from impact fee collected by the planning board of $150 and some adjustment in past health insurance premium paid due to a court ruling. This budget includes salaries and benefits for three positions not funded or filled in prior years but approved in prior budgets and two new positions both needed to meet Individual Education Plans (IEP) of students, these total $259,784. Health Insurance benefits are projected to increase by 5 percent to $5,571,193. The presentation of this budget continues Tuesday night, November 20, and we will continue to follow in next week’s HLN. During the November 19 school board meeting Superintendent Lane announced that the state property tax returned to Hudson could increase by $168,000 which would reduce the impact on taxpayers. The Executive Summary is available at the Hudson School District website. It is a report that explains in detail this proposed budget. Litchfield resident Sue Burns was one her way home Thursday, November 15, when she spotted approximately 30 turkeys strolling through and a few of them stopping at the town’s marker. Hudson Memorial School is proud to announce its recent efforts in collections for United States soldiers. Among some of the most signifi cant contributions were a candy collection from the student body which amassed over 150 pounds of sweets. The school’s “Colt

Time” class groups brought in leftover candy from Halloween to send overseas to troops in Afghanistan. This project was spearheaded by a group of eighth grade students and then spread quickly to the entire student body.

In other projects, cards, stockings were made to send to troops as well as over 100 friendship bracelets designed by Mrs. Decker’s Consumer Science classes for an imbedded unit in Afghanistan. This was a special request from the unit itself.

Personal supplies and decorated gift bags were also put together by students for a Christmas package for veterans.

Anonymous Criticism Damaging to AHS Football

This letter is addressed to those Alvirne football parents who constantly complain to the Thumbs column about the coaching staff. The previous comment regarding the players not being able to do what they are coached to do really was written by one of our seniors, as is this one, and attacking our coaches for it is just ignorant.

For the past four years that I have played, you people have hidden behind this column to talk badly about the coaching staff. Not once did any of you actually approach Coach Nimblett with concerns regarding the way the team was playing. Your negativity has been cancerous to this team and is a constant distraction for us inside the locker room. This coaching staff worked harder than you will ever know to make this team great, and they should be respected for the endless amount of time, effort and love that they put towards this program. This was a truly great group of guys and will be sorely missed by all who knew and played under them.

Good luck to the new coaches next year and good luck to the rest of the

players who have to find a way to fill the gap left behind by the departure of this phenomenal coaching staff. I wish all of you nothing but the best and will be there cheering for you win or lose. You might want to tell your parents to do the same.

Israel Will Strike IranAccording to various intelligence

agencies Iran could have nuclear armaments ready for use against Israel by early 2013. The devices could be nuclear bombs, or more likely, nuclear warheads on missiles.

Diplomacy by the United States and Western countries has been given a chance, but it has not worked to deter Iran’s nuclear program, and Iran continues to develop its nuclear weapons.

Israel cannot allow Iran, and its irrational leadership, to have nuclear weapons because two or three nuclear detonations could wipe out Israel. Therefore, Israel must strike Iran with a multi-pronged attack, and it will only have one opportunity to neutralize the Iranian nuclear threat.

Israel’s military will have to be on general alert for an Iranian counter strike using conventional weapons. It is doubtful any of the other countries in the Middle East will come to Iran’s aid.

Israel cannot count on the Obama administration to come to its aid. President Obama erroneously believes sanctions will work to halt Iran’s nuclear armaments program, and at the same time he warns Israel not to strike Iran. Obama, with his coddling of Arab countries, is not a friend of Israel.

Israel’s survival depends on military action against Iran.

Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce Invites Public to Attend Charity Event

submitted by Greater Hudson Chamber of CommerceThe Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce will be holding its

Annual Silent Auction/Dinner for Charity at The White Birch Catering and Banquet Hall on Thursday, December 6, at 6 p.m. Cost to

attend is $25 per person that includes a buffet dinner of roast beef, baked ham and pasta primavera.

The public is invited to join the Chamber for a great meal, possibly win some fabulous prizes all while raising funds for a

worthwhile cause! The event is a combination of raffle items and silent auction items, which include event tickets, gift baskets, holiday items, gift certificates and much more! The GHCC is also welcoming donation of items for the auction.

This will be the 12th year in which the monies received during the evening will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Society, which was established over 20 years ago and is operated through Blessed John Parish at St. John the Evangelist Church in Hudson, assists many local families by maintaining a food pantry, assisting with rent and utility bills, and especially helping during the holidays by distributing food baskets and gifts to families in need. This year the call for services such as food requests, assistance with medical needs, fuel assistance and basic living expenses has dramatically increased making participation even more important.

Last year more than 60 businesses donated wonderful items for the auction. Then with over 130 guests in attendance showing their holiday spirit and generosity by participating in the auction the Chamber was able to raise over $4,200. During the past 11 years the GHCC Annual Auction has donated over $49,000 for the benefit of our community.

The Silent Auction/Dinner will be held on Thursday, December 6, 6 p.m. Reservations and item donations can be made through the Chamber office at 889-4731 or visit www.HudsonChamber.com for more information.

Received Your Hudson Tax Bill? Confused? by Len Lathrop

Hudson taxpayers received a “greetings” from the town in their mailboxes on Monday. A white envelope with a grey invoice inside of it signaled the second half of the tax bill. Upon examination, many residents noted changes from what they had paid in the fi rst half to what they will pay in the second half. And there is confusion.

The HLN knows this confusion because many people have called the paper asking if we were going to do a story on why the tax bills changed, and almost simultaneously, wanting to know why. A phone call to Hudson Tax Collector Patty Barry confi rmed that she also was getting many phone calls.

Now think back several months when you received a different “greeting” from the Town that established your new property evaluation. Some people’s evaluations went up; some people’s went down.

The Town of Hudson, over the last several years, has been

evaluating people’s home and preparing through the Hudson Assessor to equalize everyone’s property value. If your property value went down less than 17 percent, our mathematicians reveal that your second half tax bill should be less than your fi rst half tax bill. If your property value stayed the same, or went down, or went up, or went down less than 17 percent, these same mathematicians say that your tax bill will go up.

Now that you’re really confused, please note that the cost of government, including our schools, has not affected these changes, and these tax rate changes are due to the reevaluation. If you don’t know what your prior property value was or your current evaluation, you can visit http://www.hudsonnh.gov/docs/as/as-new-to-old-value-location.pdf.

In a state where property value is the primary source of revenue for government, reevaluation is the process so that ensures pays their fair share.

Click with Confi dence: Three Tips to Protect Your Privacy When Shopping Online

If the growing online shopping statistics from the past few years have been any indication, buyers will again be fl ocking to online retailers this holiday season - perhaps in larger numbers than ever before.

However, as people become increasingly savvier as Web shop-pers, awareness and concerns about online privacy and safety have also grown. As many as 91 percent of consumers say that they’re concerned about privacy when shopping online. Frequent news stories about consumer information being sold or mishandled

have helped contribute to an atmosphere of mistrust, and more than half of consumers say they don’t trust businesses with their personal information.

For those who love the convenience and choice that come along with online shop-ping, there are a few ways to ensure that your information is kept safe and private.

1. Read privacy policies. You’ve probably seen them countless times, but how often have you actually read a privacy policy? If

you’ve shopped without reading, you’re certainly not alone. While 97 percent of websites have a privacy policy, those documents average nearly 2,500 words - which is almost twice as long as the Declaration of Independence. It would take the average person at least 10 minutes to read that, and not too many online shoppers want to spend that much time. How-ever, reading the privacy policy will give you the details about what a site is doing to keep your information safe.

2. Adjust your privacy settings. With a bit of tweak-ing, you can adjust your cookies and make your comput-er more protected

and cut down on inadvertent data leakage. Howev-er, be prepared to spend some time doing this, and re-member that each browser is dif-ferent. If you use multiple brows-ers on multiple computers, you’ll need to confi gure them all to your preferences. If making those changes is beyond the scope of your technological knowledge, you can try asking for help from a savvy friend or family member, or an electronics store employee might be able to help.

3. Look for privacy verifi cation seals. Perhaps the easiest, quickest way to ensure that an online retailer is trustworthy is to look for seals and logos certifying a website’s privacy practices, such as the green TRUSTe Certifi ed Privacy Seal. It’s an easy at-a-glance way to get an idea of how dedicated a retailer is to protect-ing its customers, but keep in mind that if you want to learn more, you can click on the seal to get more detailed information about the sites privacy practices. There are also browser add-ons that can help you fi nd e-commerce sites that carry the seals, and an online directory of participating websites that you can browse.

During the holiday season, you can shop with more confi dence if you know that your personal information is safe. And as retail-

ers learn that consumers demand more privacy measures, they’re responding by making their policies more easily available. For more informa-tion about making your shopping safe and secure, visit www.truste.com/consumer-privacy.

Make Your List and Check it

Twice for SafetyOne thing that should be on your holiday

shopping list this year is a reminder to watch for and avoid imitation products. Fake electronics and toys can be untested, uncertifi ed, and unsafe.

CSA Group, a leader in an-ti-counterfeiting efforts, offers gift-givers an easy checklist for safe shopping:

* Check the packaging: Counterfeit packaging often has poor design, misspellings and unclear printing. Ensure there is contact information for the manufacturer in the event that there is an issue with the products.

* Check the name: A product with no brand identifi er or trademark may be a counterfeit. Reputable companies want you to know whose product you’re buying. Buy from reputable retailers with clear exchange or return policies.

* Check the “look and feel”: Fake products are often too light and fl imsy.

* Check for the mark: Avoid electrical products missing a label from a recognized certifi cation organization such as CSA Group.

* Reality check: If a bargain seems too good to be true, it probably is.

More safety tips are avail-able online at www.csaholi-day.com.

Wait! Before you lather up the toothbrush you bought on sale 3 years ago, take a minute to learn some

facts that will help you become a better and more informed brusher.

Any toothbrush you have used for more than 3 or 4 months is history, as far as its ability to fight plaque is concerned.

Plaque is a thin, colorless film of bacteria that

constantly forms on your teeth. If it is not removed, plaque can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

A worn-out toothbrush cannot effectively clean off that plaque. Also, bent or broken bristles can injure your gums. Although individuals vary in how quickly they wear out a new toothbrush, generally your toothbrush is maximally effective for about one season. If you replace your brush each summer, autumn, winter, and spring, it will always be up-to-date in plaque fighting effectiveness -- never part of history.

The Sky is Not the Limit

Gardner Gerry (right) is seen using his two volunteers 14 year old Harrison Hidalgo (left) and 14 year old Jeffrey Briggs (middle) to demonstrate the distance

between the Moon and the Earth. by AJ Dickinson

Marking the end of “Astronomy week” at Campbell High, Earth Science and Astro Biology teacher Linnea Manley helped organize quite a finale for this past Monday night. The evening’s agenda began with a PowerPoint presentation by Gardner Gerry, who has been a member of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society (NHAS) for the past 10 years. Gardner’s brief talk enlightened listeners on what’s up there in the sky, covering all the bases from planets and stars to the many different galaxy’s that cannot be seen with the naked eye. More specifically however Gerry had explained what the several different families in attendance would be seeing later on in the evening. After educating his audience on such things as the distance between Earth and the moon, and how many light years away we are from other galaxies. The NHAS member felt that his audience was ready to take a look for themselves. Although

it was a frigid 29 degrees outside that night, no complaints could be heard from the amused stargazers as they glanced in amazement through the three high powered telescopes provided by the New Hampshire Astronomical Society.

Gardner Gerry wasn’t the only one representing the NHAS that night. Two other members in attendance who could be seen casually walking around answering questions and occasionally focusing the eyepieces on the two reflector telescopes as well as the smaller 8 inch “Schmidt Cassegrain” telescope. One of those members was Ed Ting, who explained that on nights when the moon is out and bright like it was on this one, “you can’t really see the dim stuff” such as distant galaxies. Ed continued by saying “once the moon goes down you will notice that the sky will darken by several magnitudes, and this is when we can look at the dim stuff.” Some of the extraterrestrial things viewed that

night would be the Moon, Jupiter, the M 31 Galaxy, and the Pleiades or “Subaru” in Japanese, which is where the car company Subaru’s logo originates from. Even 9 year old Colby Schmitt seemed to have a blast that night, when asked what the event was like. He replied, “it was cool because I could see all of the different craters on the moon.” If the goal for the night was to try and make learning about Astronomy fun and exciting for kids, then the event exceeded expectations, and if you are interested in having a “sky watch” of your own contact the New Hampshire Astronomical Society and join in on the fun!

Campbell High freshmen Max Rothacker is seen looking through a massive 14 inch reflector telescope which even on bright nights such as this one, can pull in enough

light to see even the dimmest of stars.

One of the power point slides that Gardner Gerry provided during his

“What’s up in the sky?” presentation.

A ‘Natural’ Thing to Dosubmitted by Early Start Children’s Center

Many of the classrooms at Early Start Children’s Center have adopted a tree in their natural playground. They take on ownership and responsibility by decorating a sign, painting a rock border, mulching and watering a planting bed around it. They will examine its characteristics and the changes that it goes through the seasons as a class project throughout the year. Children develop their observation skills by applying their senses to the study of life in and around a single tree. Early Start Children’s Center is fortunate to

have a “Natural Playground” which helps support developmental needs while creating strong bonds with children and nature.

Thumbs Up? Thumbs Down?Thumbs Up? Thumbs Down?

“Thumbs down to liberal voters. Decades of ignorance, apathy, and arrogance have arrived. Not one founding father would stand for what is happening to this wonderful country today, nor would any call themselves ‘liberal’ by today’s perverted definition.”

“Thumbs down to the ‘tenement on wheels’ on Melba Drive (It’s an RV, Clark). It has been rotting in your backyard for years now, time to remove the eyesore.”

“Thumbs down, way down to Market Basket in Hudson for raising the rates of the rotisserie chicken for the second time in less than a year. This time it went up by a $1.00 and earlier this year it went up by .70. That’s a total of $1.70 or 60% increase. While I understand the price of food is going up, this is just robbery. You should be ashamed of yourselves. You know people have to eat and you are taking advantage of us.”

“Thumbs up to the Hudson United Girls U12 Soccer Team for the amazing season 4/3/1. Went to the Semifinals and tied 2-2, went into double overtime to end in a shoot out. Lost in the shoot out, but what a great way to end a great season! Can’t wait for the spring!”

“Thumbs down to the staff that chaperoned the Homecoming Dance at Alvirne High School for their lack of chaperoning. To have a discussion with the kids before the dance about being kicked out of the dance if they were caught chewing gum, but allowing the kids to ‘grind’ on the dance floor and wear very short dresses is ridiculous. This is a high school dance, not a club in Boston. It’s not cool to look the other way when it makes your students uncomfortable. What ever happened to dress codes and codes of conduct?”

“Thumbs up to Ed, Rod and Jim of Litchfield. Hope you guys enjoyed your dinner. Glad to see the testing process is unbiased. I wonder why all of the candidates didn’t get an invite. Maybe we should ask the selectman.”

“Thumbs up to the remodeling of the duplex on Burns Hill Road. Nice job, really dresses up the property! Thumbs up to the house who has upgraded on the even side of BH just before the duplex!”

“Thumbs down to election signs. They were road litter before the election and certainly still road litter weeks later. LLB”

“Thumbs down to inconsiderate neighbors. Your property is the epitome of an eyesore. To think you advertise your services as a realtor, a landscaper and a state representative candidate is laughable. I would not employ you for any of these. Shameful. LLB”

“Thumbs up to Jamie J for being a great goalie! Thumbs down to me for leaving you off of the list of players on the team in last week’s thumbs up.”

“Thumbs up to the neighborhood of Flying Rock Road and Leaor Circle for coming together and celebrating Halloween on October 31st. What a huge turn out on such short notice! Many thanks to the neighbor who organized it. I know she tried really hard to not miss any household. What a great neighborhood to live in.”

“Thumbs up and thank you for voting. Even though we worked extra hours, and the lines were long and early. You people who voted are great.”

“Thumbs up to Alvirne Principal Beals for inspiring a collaborative, and yes, student centered learning environment. As a teacher, I find his door always open to students and faculty. He is often out and about connecting with students, faculty, and staff. We may not always agree, but your voice will be heard. My students have been great and respectful, plenty of learning going on. Student discipline issues? The administration has been supportive and responsive to the few issues I have had. Spirit week was fun for all (with education in my classroom not missing a beat - credit the respectful students). Is there room for improvement? Of course, but Bronco Nation is alive and well. I can’t wait to get back to work on Monday!”

“Thumbs down to those who think exposing

themselves in public is freedom of speech at local parks. Just because there is open spaces does not mean everyone else wants the expression. Nashua is watching, is Hudson next? Pictures last so long and these acts are not wanted.”

“Thumbs up to Hudson voters. You may not agree with their opinions but at least they voted in large numbers. Now, if only they can control the budgets in the local government and School Board spending.”

“Thumbs down to the drivers in the right lane at the lights in front of Dunkins to go to Rte 3. Stop letting in cars in left lane over! Step on the gas and force them to go straight to Walmart. They should wait in line like everyone else not force their way in and almost hit other cars. If they start missing getting over maybe they will actually stop.”

“Thumbs up to Infowars.com and Naturalnews.

com! I should have listened to friends earlier about these sites that give the full story and truth. It’s not some ‘conspiracy’. I encourage citizens to take 30 minutes out of your day to read about what’s really going on. I should have stopped trusting the mainstream news a long time ago! I also want to point out that fluoride was used during the Holocaust and is now in our tap water! Many towns in this nation have banned it; we should too! Sincerely, a concerned citizen.”

“Thumbs up to Blessed John XXIII Church for its showing the wonderful video series entitled Catholicism. Viewing this series is yet another reason to make one proud to be a Roman Catholic.”

“Thumbs down to the UPS driver for using Center Street in Litchfield as a racing track. Next time the police will be notified, we still do have small children that live on this street. I’m sure it’s not only Center Street that you drive like this.”

“Thumbs up to New Hampshire. I am so proud to see that they voted for the best man, Obama! The people here must’ve remembered when Mitt was the governor of MA. He was never considered ‘their people’.”

“Thumbs up to the Alvirne JROTC students who once again, participated in the Veterans Day placement of flags at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Led by Colonel Grady and Sergeant Dubeau, the cadets placed over 870 U.S. flags on the graves

of Veterans to pay tribute to the sacrifices of our deceased Veterans. The flags are supplied to them by the Nashua Elks Lodge. The JROTC students handled this task with reverence, dedication and pride. We should be proud of them!”

“Thumbs down to the people on Albuquerque Ave that can’t stop or slow down for the flock of turkeys crossing the road. You are not the only species on earth. Thank you to the majority that do stop.”

“Thumbs up to Halloween on Sunday in Hudson! Wish it were always on Sunday!”

“Thumbs up to Campbell High School kitchen ladies for serving a delicious Thanksgiving feast. My son could not say enough how good it was.”

“Thumbs up to Litchfield’s newest Marines 1st Lt. Martin and PFC Cialek. We thank you for your service and wish you well as you serve your country and the Marine Corps - be safe.”

“Thumbs up andcongratulations to Lcpl Hines USMC on your recent promotion and assignment to the 3rd CLB USMC, Kbay HI. We are all very proud of you – ‘RAH’. Please remember all of our

brave young men and women proudly serving our country in all of the armed services during the upcoming holiday season.”

“Thumbs up to all the liberal sympathizers living in Litchfield for exposing yourself. You won’t have President Bush to kick around anymore. We have become Taxachusetts-North!!”

“Thumbs down to the AHS principal who has let our lunch time become a zoo when he is sitting right there. Kids running on top of tables throwing food and drinks and he thinks it is funny. I am tired of getting hit and it is totally wrong.”

“Thumbs down – way down – for those who display their holiday lights prior to Thanksgiving. Can’t we focus on one holiday before giving way to another? Please leave them off until we’ve at least finished giving thanks. This obsession with impatience for the holidays diminishes the special nature of the holidays and just emphasizes the commerciality of the season. Will you also be the ones waiting at the stores at midnight on Thanksgiving to participate in the gluttony? We have become a society of overindulgence and this just feeds the beast.”

“Thumbs down to those who chastised Romney for saying Obama won because he gave out free stuff. I have seen it firsthand with free cell phones, free minutes, free cable, a huge increase in welfare, etc. Why don’t we just admit Mitt was/is right?”

“Thumbs down to our Hudson School Board in blindly accepting the Alvirne principal’s policy changes without checking to see if they worked in his past positions. If you all did some homework you would find that on his departure from Laconia the electronics policy was immediately changed because it caused chaos as did all of his changes. The only stakeholders the changes benefit is the students in allowing an out of control mob of which he can blame on his ‘delegates’.”

“Thumbs down to the HBOS for supporting virtually every request to spend our money. Now the HFD wants to spend $178,000 for one vehicle. If spending $178,000 for a single vehicle could save us $24,000 every year for the next ten years, why wasn’t this vehicle purchased a long time ago? We should purchase a dozen of them. By spending a mere $2.1M we’d be saving $2.9M. How many new Suburban’s could the HFD buy with $2.9M? Why don’t businesses spend like this? Because they have a responsibility to their residents, I mean shareholders. We could spend $0 and save $178,000.”

“Thumbs down to whoever is responsible for putting the fence between Marsh Road and the Sousa Blvd. If it’s the people from Sousa Blvd, you shouldn’t be trying to stop the people who are less fortunate than you from walking those streets. If it’s the people of Marsh Road, what the heck

were we thinking?”

“Thumbs down to Republicans. Now that Republicans found out that wealth cannot buy the White House, they want to become middle class again. Republicans now know that all roads to the White House run through the middle class. The problem is, that the middle class is no longer white, and most Republicans have abandoned the middle class and their values. We have become a rainbow society, and Republicans may never catch up because Romney’s loss may have elected Hillary Clinton until 2024. The new middle class has abandoned most of the thinking of our forefathers. They just kept the good parts. There are happy endings after all, and may God bless Obama.”

“Thumbs up to America and the over-taxed working class. Your voice was heard loud and clear. Now wouldn’t it be nice if the

obstructionist- Steve Reardon-types can pack up their signs, editorials, and negative ramblings and begin to work together and move on to create a better country.”

“Thumbs down to the very bigoted Hudson~Litchfield News for not printing comments criticizing Steve Reardon and his very negative, obstructionist, demeaning ramblings on our President, his party and our country. I think we need a new publisher.”

“Thumbs down to Republican leadership. Everyday Republicans are the middle class. The Republican leadership no longer have their vote. Republican Lindsay Graham was on ‘Meet the Press’ Sunday morning, speaking about Benghazi and threatening Egypt. Americans elected Obama. The people have taken the best parts of our forefathers and moved on from them and the Republican leadership was not invited. Republican leaders like Lindsay Graham show how worthless they are to our country. Today, power to serve the wealthy is no longer tolerated. During wartime, publicly wanting your President to fail should be treason. Interfering with Obama, will elect Hillary Clinton until 2024.”

“Thumbs up. We are so glad to see Roger Coutu back in action. He is the glue that holds that board together. His main goal is to keep the tax rate down and keep everybody happy and he does a great job. Congratulations, Roger, and keep the good work up. We love ya!”

submitted by Aaron BellomoSince its opening in 1950, tens of thousands of

broncos have trotted the halls of Alvirne High School. Hundreds have graced the luscious trails and taken part on the Cross Country teams. Yet, out of these masses of students throughout Alvirne history, only one boy and one girl can possess the Alvirne 5,000 meter record and subsequent fame of being the best cross country runner in school history.

For those wishing to be crowned in Alvirne distance running immortality the journey starts far before the first practice. Cross Country runners start training in June for races in October. There were several runners noble enough to put the hard summer miles in such as Steve Macleod, Kyle Saunders, Brendan Lavalley, Marie Morrier, Erica Notini to name a few.

But a few went the extra mile, or many extra miles to be more exact. Sophomore Phil Demers ran about 60-65 miles a week over the summer. Senior Aaron Bellomo logged 60 miles a week on average, and Junior Lydia Lyman racked up 50-60 a week. These three went the extra distance in a sport where mileage is of the utmost importance and have been forever rewarded for their efforts. Demers ran a time of 16 minutes and 18 seconds on the Alvirne 5,000m course and ranks sixth all-time in school history! Bellomo broke Caleb Donnelly’s school record with a time of 15 minutes and 47 seconds! And not to be outdone, Lyman broke Laura Goudreau’s school record with a time of 19 minutes and 13 seconds! Bellomo now holds three schools records (the mile, 2 mile, and 5000m) and has earned the right to be acknowledged amongst Alvirne’s most elite runners.

Names like Alan Marcotte (Class of 1999), Dominic Puleo (Class of 2008), Alex Brown (Class of

2005), Caleb Donnelly (Class of 2011), John Kennedy (Class of 2001), Matt Parsons (Class of 2001), Edward Dorgan (Class of 1995) and now Aaron Bellomo (Class of 2013) are all synonymous with greatness in terms of Alvirne male distance running.

Bellomo also placed third in NH Division 1 and fifth in the state! Demers, being only a sophomore, is very likely to join this association and will likely challenge Bellomo’s time for the course record! Lydia Lyman now holds two school records (1500m and 5000m) and has asserted herself onto the list of Alvirne female running greats such as Laura Goudreau (Class of 2010), Kristen Robitaille (Class of 1994), Emily Laplante (Class of 2010), and now Lydia Lyman (Class of 2014)! Lyman also placed 33rd in NH Division 1 and 39th in the state.

Five years upon graduation, most Broncos’ names have been forgotten. Some of the heroes do get remembered for a while. But it is legends like these three whose names will never be forgotten, and will always be associated with hard work, dedication, and greatness in the Alvirne Distance Running community!

Powlowsky and Drew Sign Letters of Intent,

Heading Off to Sienna Collegesubmitted by Karen Bonney

On November 19, longtime friends and teammates Mikayla Powlowsky and Chelsey Drew signed their National Letter of Intent in front of teammates, friends and families. Next fall, both of them will be headed to Siena College in Loudonville, NY, to play Division I softball.

Their journey began in first grade. They both were playing recreation softball on different teams when Mikayla told Chelsey about the Hudson Heat. Chelsey joined the Heat and together they would play for the Heat over the next three years. Following that time, they would be teammates and adversaries until they got to Hudson Memorial School.

As I spoke to the two of them, they shared the story about when they were in the fourth grade and they were watching a movie together where the storyline involved two girls putting together a time capsule and burying it in one of the girl’s backyard. Mikayla and Chelsey decided to do their own time capsule, which included a piece of paper they wrote saying they would go off together and play Division I softball at the same college. Eight years later, they can look back at that story and smile.

When asked separately what this means to each of them, they both replied” It means everything to me. All of my hard work and dedication to the sport has paid off.” Mikayla and Chelsey are both quick to thank their parents, teammates, and coaches who have played with them or worked with them over the years. Both athletes are also looking forward to the coming high school softball season and are very excited to continue on together at Siena, where Chelsey plans to study physical therapy and Mikayla looks to be an English major with a minor in broadcasting.

Dear Friends and Neighbors of Greater Nashua:

This Thanksgiving, the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter has more to be grateful for than ever before. Over the past month, we have heard unprecedented vocal and enthusiastic support for our programs and our mission.

And thanks to all of you, this holiday season will be the last time we will need to turn away food donations and have hungry families standing outside in line because we are constrained by space.

We are thrilled to announce that NSKS has reached an agreement to purchase the VFW Hall at 2 Quincy Street in Nashua. We plan to close on the building in early March 2013 and will begin renovations shortly thereafter with a planned opening in the early Fall.

Stay tuned for the announcement of our first-ever capital campaign. But first - Turkeys and Happy Holidays!!
