A MESSAGEfrom Ms. Potter-Davis
Happy Fall!
It was wonderful to see so many families at Huegel for our Open House. A favorite part of my job is meeting families and seeing how proud your child is to share our school with you. If you weren’t able to join us, we hope to see you at another one of our family events. We will have our next Family Movie Night on November 7. Also don’t forget that Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up on the afternoon and evening of November 19. Our teachers are looking forward to sharing information with you about your child’s progress.
We are honored to share that Huegel was honored by the Wisconsin PBIS Network as a School of Distinction for our
implementation of our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) program. It is through this program that we proactively teach our expected behaviors, which are to be safe, respectful and responsible. We are proud of our accomplishments and of our students for working to make our school a safe and thriving learning environment.

In addition to academics (reading, math, writing, science and social studies), our teachers also focus on social emotional learning. Through an engaging curriculum called Second Step, our Huegel students are learning about emotions and appropriate social behaviors. Some of the themes that are covered in the lessons include “skills for learning”, “empathy”, “emotion management” and “problem solving”. Throughout this newsletter you will learn more about our efforts to teach social emotional learning, as well as other important tips around building good habits for attendance, when to keep your child home, and much more!
I look forward to another great month.
PLASTIC BOTTLE CAPS NEEDED
Dear Huegel Eagles,
My classes are designing 5 bottle cap mosaic murals
this year and we need LOTS of recycled plastic bottle
caps.
The caps need to be CLEAN and dry in order for
me to use them. As you will see from the images to
the right, variety is the key! We will begin the project
once we have collected enough bottle caps.
Thanks so much!

HUEGEL STUDENTS IN ACTION!The 2014-15 school year has opened with two exciting opportunities for our students.
The first is one is the Millennium Soccer Program, which was open to all students in 1st
through 5th grade. The program meets for 6 weeks on Saturday mornings, and for
only $10 students were provided with shin guards, shorts, socks and a jersey. Students
practice basic skills for the first part of the morning, and then break into teams to play a
game. This fall we have over 90 students participating!
We are also excited to offer Girls on the Run to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls. We
currently have 15 girls who meet twice a week after school for an hour and a half.
The program offers a fun, experience-based curriculum that also creatively integrates
running. The girls will identify a service project, and are also training to complete a 5K in
Waunakee in early November. Wish them luck!
PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDSJoin us November 6th for an open discussion
and an opportunity to meet and connect with
other Huegel parents.
We are an organization dedicated to assisting
parents through social events, education and
family support.

PTO CORNER BY: JENNIFER SEEKER CONROY, PTO PRESIDENT
It’s hard to believe the first quarter of the school
year is already wrapping up! It’s almost time to
bundle up the for the bus stop and to hang up
Thanksgiving turkeys made from handprints!
This school year has already been packed with fun
and learning and many more opportunities remain
to be involved in our school. Huegel is our school,
and as parents, teachers, staff, and community
members, we have the privilege and responsibility of
making our school great both for our kids and future
generations.
Some ideas to get involved in your student’s school
day: volunteer in her classroom, eat lunch with her
at school, check her boomerang folder every night,
read together, and attend school events. If you
have more time and interest, attend PTO meetings,
chair or volunteer for a school event, be on the
PTO board, or tutor a student. You don’t have to be
an expert to do any of these things. Just have the
passion to pitch in and know that you will have a
support network of other parents and school staff to
work with you.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Fall
Family Forum in October! We enjoyed a delicious
Olive Garden dinner and learned about the MMSD
technology plan and ideas for incorporating
technology into learning. If you received a survey
about the forum, please return it. Your input and
feedback is very important as we plan future forums.
The Spring Forum will be March 10, 2015. Dinner will
again be provided. If you have topic suggestions or
any other feedback, include it in the survey or email
it to me at [email protected]
Family Movie Night is November 7th! Join us for a
screening of Planes 2: Fire and Rescue fresh out of
the theaters! Doors open at 6 and the movie starts
at 6:30.
Please also join us at the next PTO meeting on
November 11th in the library. Pizza and childcare
will be available. We will be discussing events and
fundraisers, and hearing from Principal Abby Potter-
Davis.
Parent-teacher conferences are this month as well.
Make sure to sign up if you haven’t yet and attend
your scheduled time slot. This is a very valuable
opportunity to hear directly from your student’s
teacher, but the conferences are brief! You might
want to bring a list of items to discuss or ask your
child for input.
Don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions,
concerns, or ideas. I look forward to hearing from
you and love working together to make Huegel a
great place for all of us!

IS YOUR CHILD WELL ENOUGH TO GO TO SCHOOL?
It is not always easy to decide if your child is sick enough to stay home or well enough to be in school.
Children who come to school are expected, with few exceptions, to participate fully in school activities.
Here are some guidelines that might help in a parent’s decision-making:
1. FEVER: A fever of 100 degrees or more signals an illness that is probably going to make a student uncomfortable and unable to function well in class. Your child should stay home until his or her temperature is less than 100 degrees for a day and he/she is feeling better.
2. VOMITING, DIARRHEA OR SEVERE NAUSEA: These are symptoms that require a student to remain at home until a normal diet is tolerated the night before and the morning of school.
3. INFECTIOUS DISEASES: Diseases such as impetigo, pink eye with thick drainage, and strep throat require a health care provider’s visits and prescription for medication. Contacting the health care provider and using the medicine as directed for the full recommended length of time are
necessary. A student may return to school 24 hours after the first dose of an antibiotic and if he/she is feeling well.
Students with chicken pox may return to school when all the scabs are completely dried and no new lesions are developing (usually 5-7 days).
4. RASHES: Rashes or patches of broken, itchy skin need to be examined by a health care provider if they appear to be spreading or not improving.
5. INJURIES: If a student has an injury that causes continuous discomfort, the student should not attend school until the condition is checked by a health care provider or it improves. Injuries that interfere with class participation need a medical evaluation. If participation in physical education classes is not recommended, a health care provider’s excuse is required.

BUILDING GOOD HABITS FOR ATTENDANCE! Attending school regularly and arriving on time
helps children feel better about school and
themselves. We want all our students to be ready
and engaged in learning each day.
What you can do:
• Make sure your child gets enough sleep. 6 to 9
year olds need at least 10 hours of sleep and 10 to
12 year olds need at least 9+ hours.
• Remove electronic screen devices (TV,
computer, tablets, phone) from their bedroom at
bedtime
• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
• Lay out clothes and backpack the night before
• Don’t let your child stay home unless s/he
is truly sick. Keep in mind that complaints of a
stomachache or headache can be a sign of
anxiety and not a reason to stay home. ]
• If your child seems anxious about going to
school, talk to their teacher, the Social Worker (Ms.
Wacker), psychologist (Mr. Wilder)
• When possible avoid medical appointments and
extended trips during the school day
(Adapted from attendanceworks.org)
RESPONSIBLE. RESPECTFUL. SAFE.
SAFE ARRIVALWhen your child is going to be
absent or sick, please call the Safe
Arrival number at 204-3107 and
leave your child’s name, reason
for the absence, the date and
their lunch choice (A, B or cold) if
they are coming in late. It is very
important that we account for
each child each day.
You can call any time of day;
please call before 8:30 AM on the
day your child will be absent.
Excuse of Planned Absences
Parents/Guardians who want to
have their child miss school for
any reason other than medical
(such as family trips) must submit
a Request for Excuse of Planned
Absences available in the school
office.

I know how important it is
to teach to the “whole”

by teaching these skills, we
