Hunger Action Month Hunger is the most extreme form of poverty. According to AlabamaPossible’s 2015 information, Alabama is the nation’s 6th poorest state. Overall poverty rates are: US 15.8%, AL 18.9%, Jefferson County 18.9%, for those over age 65 in Jefferson County 10.7% and for children in Jefferson County 26.8%. Nationally 22% of our chil-dren live in poverty while 27% of all children in Alabama live in poverty (298,000 children). Alabama’s children poverty rate has increased 5% from 2008. According to Kids Count Report and Voices for Alabama’s Children, Alabama has dropped from 44th to 45th in the nation in terms of overall child well being. Poverty is defined by the Department of Health and Human Services and poverty level for a family of four at $23,850 in 2014. 2 out of 3 children living in poverty in Alabama live in high poverty areas, areas where the poverty rate is at 30% or higher. Children in high poverty areas are less likely to have access to high quality schools and early learning programs. There are some areas of our state that are so impoverished that there aren't any programs available for children younger than 4. The overall health of children in the state is improving. In 2013, there were 33 child/teen deaths per 100,000 peo-ple compared to 40 in 2008. The percentage of low-birth weight babies in the state dropped slightly from 10.6 % to 10 %. The percentage of teenagers not in school and not working remained at 10 %. Also, 25% of Alabama students aren't graduating high school on time and 80 % of 8th grade students aren't proficient in math. 54 % of the state's 3 and 4-year-olds aren't attending pre-kindergarten. This number is expected to drop in the near future as the state's top rated First Class Pre-K (4-year olds attend) program continues to add classrooms in underserved parts of the state. “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” Luke 3:11 God supplies abundantly! More than enough food is available to feed those who don’t have enough to eat. God of creation, our land is filled with an abundance of food, yet some are still hungry. Give us grace to share joyfully with your hungry children across our land. Let us be a faithful people who meet the needs of the poor. Don’t forget to pick up your Prayer and Action calendar. Prayerfully consider helping those that are hungry by giving to Society of St. Andrew, EACM or Meals on Wheels.
