We wanted to begin by saying how saddened we were by the sudden passing of Ms. Rozina

Ahmed. She was a great teacher and touched the lives of many of us, especially the students that she

taught. Her caring way and student focused approach helped each student to know that she cared about

each and every one of them. She will be greatly missed by all of us and we wish her family the best as

they grieve for the loss of a wonderful person.

As we move into a New Year, we want to wish all of our families a great start to 2016. As we move into

the last month of our first semester, we want to wish all of our high school students the best of luck on

their exams during the month of January. We would like to especially wish good luck to our grade 12

students who will be writing diploma exams. We will all be working hard to make sure that the students

are prepared and ready to do their very best on the exams.

We also wanted to take a minute and thank everyone that participated in the various activities that oc-

curred at HSS throughout December. The Christmas band concert and elementary concert were won-

derful events that took a lot of preparation and execution from staff and students. The elementary Christ-

mas concert was attended by a very large amount of people (likely the most that we have had at a con-

cert) and we appreciated the support of our school community.

Lastly, we just wanted to let everyone know how much we appreciate the support of our parents, stu-

dents, and our community as a whole. We have wonderful volunteers that help to keep

our school a great place to come to each and every day. Thanks for all of your support.

HSS Science Fair 2016

Does music affect plant growth? A good question for a Science Fair project?

For all budding Einsteins out there it is never to early to start thinking about doing a

Science Fair project.

The annual Hugh Sutherland Science Fair will be held on Monday, February 8.

Information packages have been handed out. Students still needing a package can see Mrs. Tyler or Mrs. Sadek. Registration forms indicating participation must be

handed in by Friday, January 15.

If any parents or community members would like to help judge projects, please contact

the school office by January 15th.

The Hugh Sutherland School Drama Club will be putting on a production of Cheaper by the Dozen in the

spring, and auditions will take place on January 6 and 7 after school. Students in Grades 7-12 who are interest-

ed in auditioning need to see Ms. Strand, Mrs. Pike, or Mrs. Sadek to get a script to practice for auditions.

The Grade 3-6 Drama Club will be starting at the beginning of January, so stay tuned for more information!

Please contact Ms. Strand, Mrs. Pike, or Mrs. Sadek if you have any questions.

Hugh Sutherland School will be starting a new session of its One-to-One Reading Program in February 2016, and we are

looking for more committed volunteers to read with our younger students!

Volunteer expectations:

-on-one with students

This is an excellent opportunity for family members to become involved in student learning and to support and encourage

literacy at Hugh Sutherland School! Students greatly benefit from having one-on-one reading time with adults, and it helps

children learn literacy skills for life.

For more information, please contact Teri Sadek at [email protected] or 403-337-3326. We look forward to working to-

gether with families in the community to build strong readers and help students develop a love for reading!

Happy 2016!

Every 23 minutes someone in Canada is injured by impaired driving. In Alberta alone there were 1183 impaired driving

collisions in 2010. Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death among youth, not only in Canada, but also Al-

berta.

Hugh Sutherland's School Double Trouble Drinking & Driving team main goal continues to inspire and motivate young

people to stand up and eliminate the number one cause of death and injury among youth- drinking & driving! Not only in

the school but in the community of Carstairs too.

Another goal of the Team is to attend the Canadian Youth Against Impaired Driving National Conference, in Calgary, April

7-10, 2016. Although we continue to do numerous fundraisers, we are looking for financial support. With 35 student mem-

bers on the DT team, the fundraising efforts that we are doing, will not cover for the whole team to go. The cost is

$415/student. This cost includes their hotel accommodations, meals, presentations and swag.

Donating to Double Trouble Drinking & Driving would be contributing to the future of our youth in Alberta. We would cer-

tainly offer our services for a donation also.

If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.

One-on-One Reading Program

Supporting health and wellness priorities in Chinook’s Edge A message from the Superintendent The new year provides a perfect opportunity to re-energize the many efforts being made in our school division to support the health and well-being of our students, staff and families. We know that ensuring a healthy physical and social environment in our schools can positively impact student performance and academic achievement, and people in our schools work hard every day to help each of our students reach their full potential. Wellness is a balanced state of emotional, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual well-being, and stu-dents, staff and parents throughout Chinook’s Edge are working together to encourage growth in each of these areas. Last year, we created our new ‘Welcoming, caring, respectful, safe and inclusive schools’ administrative procedure, to foster the sense of belonging and well-being we want for all members of our school community. This year, our Board is delving into that procedure further to establish clear protocols specific to supporting all sexual and gender minority staff, students, and their families in the division. This procedure is expected to be finalized early in the new year, to ensure we provide thorough and ef-fective support for LGBTQ students and staff in Chinook’s Edge. I thank everyone whose efforts are supporting these priorities, and I wish all of our Chinook’s Edge fami-lies a happy and healthy new year. Kurt Sacher Superintendent of Schools
