WARNING!!!!

THE FOLLOWING PRESENTATION HAS BEEN CREATED PRIMARILY AS ENTERTAINMENT! Thus not all points made in this program are to be taken serious. Which areas you do take into serious consideration is entirely up to YOU!!

APPROACHES TO DRAWING

Page 4: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

PREPARATION

Before you go on ahead and just start drawing there are many factors one should consider

Drawing requires a well trained body, mind and soul!

Drawing is actually more dangerous than it lets on, here are a few things you may want to consider before you pick up that pencil

Page 5: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

PHYSICAL CONDITION

Many may not know this, but drawing requires intense rigorous physical fitness, not just for control and stamina but also safety

Here are some prerequisites you should achieve before drawing:

Bench Press : 200 pounds

Squat: 300 pounds

A mile run under 6 minutes

Beat Ninja Gaiden in 10 minutes

Page 6: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

EXERCISE: WORKOUTS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR DRAWING BODYDrawing requires every single muscle your body has so here

are some exercises you should always do as a warm up to drawing :

100 push ups a day

100 sit ups a day

500 wrist curls with 50 pound dumbbells

A mile run

Fight a bear

Punch through concrete

Defeat Gravity

TOOLS OF DRAWING: THE SERIOUS STUFFConsider the kind of drawing you’re doing:

A Sketch A Lengthy Drawing

Page 8: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

SKETCH

Sketches tend to be our quick drawings we do on a whim

• These are good for actual warm ups to more time consuming drawings

• But they also function a good measure of your own drawing intuition

• Here’s where you can see what you can draw with relatively little set up or thought

• You can also think of these as subjects that are relatively in your comfort zone

• Ideas for more refined drawings can be inspired from these

MOVING TO LONGER DRAWINGS

Longer drawings tend to take more time not only in the drawing of the picture but also in preparation.

Here are tools to consider using when engaging in this kind of drawing

• Thumbnails

• References

• Studies

THUMBNAILS

These are smaller sketches used to set up composition of a drawing

They are good for placing objects in the drawing

Page 11: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

REFERENCES

Images taken from reality or other material to shape a particular portion of the drawing

Also good practice for sketching as well

Page 12: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

STUDIES

A Series of sketches on a particular aspect of the drawing

If there is a particularly challenging or important portion of a drawing this can be used to practice that particular portion

Page 13: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

THE THREE MODES OF DRAWING: MODE 1 Mode 1: Recreational (Calm)

Just draw whatever you want

Multitask

A nice way to experiment

Page 14: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

MODE 2: SERIOUS

Mode 2: Serious (determined)

The longer drawing

No distractions

Challenging oneself

Page 15: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

MODE 3: YOU ARE A WEAPON OF MASS CREATION !!Mode 3: Assault Mode (Intensity to the MAX!)

ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!!

Be sure friends and loved ones are cleared from the area

Page 16: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

EXERCISES THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY HELP…You can challenge yourself in many ways to help improve your

drawings

• Draw subjects you’re not accustomed to

• Draw on a bus to work on control

• Draw with material you’re not used to

• If you work small try working large ‘

• If you work large try working small

• Find a worthy rival and challenge them to a drawing death match

• Take drawings you’ve done in the past and draw them again

• Draw fan art to see how you interpret other artist’s work

HUMAN ANATOMY

Page 18: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

UNDERSTANDING ANATOMY

A figure drawing is reflective of how the artist understands the human body

What features do we choose to give attention to, and what do we simplify

Page 19: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

WAYS TO STUDY HUMAN ANATOMY

Books:

Anatomy books

How to books

Take a Figure Drawing Class:

Sessions

Websites

Page 20: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

SIMPLIFYING THE HUMAN FIGURE

Breaking down the human structure:

Use of basic shapes to structure the figure

Gesture Drawing: Drawings that quickly capture weight, movement and tension in the human figure

Page 21: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

CONTOUR

Line/Outline

Complex Simplicity

Curves

Page 22: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

TONE

Use of Light Values to push and pull features of the body

Understanding of how light travels over the surface of the body

Page 23: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

PARTS AND THE WHOLE

The Human Body is comprised of many recognizable parts

• Head

• Torso

• Hips

• Arms

• Legs

Not to mention each of these parts have their own subsection

How does one create a singular body out of these distinct features?

Page 24: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

GOOD EXERCISE

Take your favorite comic artist

Study how they approach these problems

What do they emphasize

What do they simplify

Can you identify what they consider the most important features of the body

How do they compare to your own

Do this with lots of artists you know

Page 25: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

CRUEL REALITY

Realistically speaking:

• Understanding the human body in drawing takes years

• Drawing requires an intuitive understanding

• Even if you logically understand how drawing the figure is done it must be carved into your muscle memory to achieve results

Page 26: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

BUT THEN AGAIN…

Remember that drawing is a representation of reality through the use of mark and tone

• In the end you’re not trying to replicate the human body

• You are aiming to create a representation that is recognizable to others

• This is what gives us the degree of variation in style

• Everyone sees the figure differently

• Take what you consider to be the most important parts of the figure and refine those features

• Drawing is a continuous process, you will discover new things all the time

MANLY PIKACHU: THE TUTORIAL

The Quick 3 step process to drawing a manly Pikachu of your very own

Page 28: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

STEP 1: MANLY BASE

Get the manliest character you can possibly muster and draw him out

Page 29: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

STEP 2:REMOVING

Remove any unnecessary features such as hair and ears (you can keep the hair if you think it makes it manlier)

Page 30: Human Anatomy/Drawing Methodology/Manchu

STEP 3:COMPLETION

Add the essential Pikachu components

• Ears

• Red Cheeks

• Electricity

• Death aura
