Sustainability Exhibition and Presentations in the Carrefour

On Friday, Dec. 5, 1-4pm, Sustainability-in-Action students will be presenting their research and project proposals to the Vanier community in an informal, “science fair” atmosphere. The aim of the research was to engage in local, interdisciplinary issues; understand the global implications of these issues; and make recommendations to the 2015 Vanier Environmental Assessment. Students are eager to talk about their vision for a more sustainable campus. Please come to the Carrefour and start a conversation - you might find their ideas contagious.

An exhibition of posters will accompany the event. The posters are the result of a collaborative learning experiment between two courses: Sustainability-in-Action (365-HSB), co-taught by Mark Cohen and Richard Klopp, and Promotional Documents (412-HSU), taught by Joan Taylor. Student teams from each course engaged in a mock client-consultant relationship with the objective of creating an evocative, graphic work that distills the essence of their research topic. We aim to have the posters up a day before the event.

Vanier College at Canadian Bureau of International Education's annual Conference

The Canadian Bureau of International Education’s (CBIE) annual conference was held in Ottawa November 19 to 22. This annual conference brings together educators at the university and college levels who are involved in international education. Some 750 participants were in attendance. Vanier was well represented at the session entitled “The Diplomacy of Knowledge: A transformative and empowering classroom experience”, which was given by Dany Brown (Services for Students) and Renée Karp and Alan Wong (English Department). Dany introduced the session by presenting an overview of Vanier, particularly the cultural mix of our students and certain Student

Services and International Education initiatives to involve students in gaining competencies. Renée presented the changes she had made to her curriculum and pedagogy that resulted in an inclusive and empowering international literary genre course. Alan described how his personal history and values have informed his teaching, making his classroom inclusive where students can comfortably learn. Nursing’s Melodie Hicks, also in attendance, was able to speak

informally in a number of workshops about the constantly expanding Vanier Malawi Nursing Exchange, and its benefits to the students. We were all able to attend workshops on the major themes of

the conference: how to internationalize our institutions to meet the challenges of our interconnected world and how to increase the intercultural skills of our students.

at Église Saint-Laurent, a choir of seventy voices conducted by Philippe Bourque will present works by the German romantic composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), including the lovely Liebeslieder Waltzes Op. 52. Brass student Rachel Côté will perform in his Four Songs Op. 17 for women’s choir with harp and two French horns, and the Rhapsody for Alto Op. 53 for men’s choir will feature mezzo-soprano Geneviève Lévesque. Other works and carols will also be sung at this concert. We look forward to seeing you there! (Suggested donation $10)

Well, here we are at the end of the first semester in the 2014-2015 academic year and it’s been another fabulous run of free UB recitals from the Music Department. As usual, we are going to end the semester with a bang. This week’s concert offers a crazy variety of performances, from solo classical guitar to brass, from string and wind ensembles to some piano four hands work.

Eclectic, exciting, exceptional, exquisite—this free recital takes place this Wednesday, December 3 at 12:30 in the Auditorium. Don’t be late!

Winter Biking time!

Every year more Montrealers ride bikes in the winter because it makes so much sense. Granted it is a bit more hassle, but the benefits of riding are still all there (proportionately multiplied if you consider winter’s effects on other modes of transport).

Riding in winter brings up questions about equipment, route choices, dress, freezing… There is some expertise available in this area right here at Vanier. Come discuss with others who ride or discover how you could slowly get started winter riding this very year!

We are having our next bake sales/fundraiser to raise money for our students in need. Toonie Tuesday is back! It will take place in the Student Mall from 10am-3pm on December 2, 2014.

Students wishing to volunteer their time for community hours can sign-up in C203. Please identify what you are baking and label the ingredients. People can bake and bring their goods on the morning of December 2

bake sale is taking place.

Donations (please bring your toonies) will also be accepted as the bake sale takes place, our student financial need is as great as ever! Tax receipts will be available for donations of $10 and more, cheques should be made out to the Vanier College Foundation. Thank you for your help and support, our goal is to make this a real huge community event that raises a great deal of money for our students in need.

Vanier Student delegates win top awards at the 2014 Montreal United Nations Conference

Last weekend, the VCSA Society of History and Politics went to the Montreal United Nations Conference (MUNC), held at Dawson College. The conference lasted the entire weekend from the November 21st-23rd. Vanier delegates participated in several committees, including The World Trade Organization, The United Nations Security Council, Post 2015 Development Goals, AD-HOC Committee, Global Compact Committee and The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII). Model UN conferences take place several times a year and are simulations and competitions, in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. Participants are placed in committees and assigned countries, organizations or political figures, to represent. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they then debate with their fellow delegates in committee. Vanier sent a total of 11 delegates to participate in the MUNC conference and won 5 awards (one of the highest number amassed by any college there). Teaching Tip: Successful Exam Preparation

The end of the semester is here and we’ve hit that last milestone: exam time. Stress levels rise as you prepare exams that will test your students learning, and students prepare to take those tests. But how can you be certain that your tests are in fact testing what your students should have been learning throughout the semester? What can you do to help your students get ready to succeed on your tests? Preparing Your Exams You can use this Exam Preparation worksheet to help you prepare your exam questions. Keep in mind that this brainstorming process

isn’t necessarily linear; you may go back and forth between the columns as ideas come to mind. For example, thinking of good ways for students to demonstrate their skills might remind you of other skills they will need to show. 1. Know your goals

When preparing your exams, the first thing you should consider is “what skills or knowledge (competencies) do I expect my students to be able to show on this exam?” Write down each of the expected skills or knowledge in the left column of the worksheet. You should also take the time to review the course competencies and compare them with what you plan to test on your exam. Have you assessed your students on all of these skills at some point in the course or should you consider adding some elements to this exam?

2. What does it look like? Once you’ve decided what you are testing on this exam,

establish what it will look like when a student has mastered each of the skills. What will confirm that a student knows the required material or can do the required skill? In the second column of the worksheet give yourself a short description of what you expect from a student who has mastered each skill or knowledge. Keep in mind that this isn’t what you expect out of a student who should get a 90%; it should be what a student needs to know to pass. (Hint: this process can help you develop your rubric for grading the exams).

3. How can they show it? The next step is to consider what kinds of questions will

allow students to demonstrate these skills and knowledge. If you want a student to show their understanding of important terms in your discipline they could do that by writing short definitions for words, connecting given definitions with terms, or using the words properly in a longer written response. If you want students to show that they know how to resolve a problem they could demonstrate their knowledge by successfully resolving a problem solving question. Write down each of the ways a student could show mastery of a skill in the third column of your worksheet.

4. How will I ask it? Finally, once you have established the many ways that

students could demonstrate their knowledge and skills, you can now select which methods you want to include on your exam. This will let you focus now on working out how you will phrase your questions to encourage students to show their mastery of these skills. Students often struggle with trying to figure out what their teacher wants them to do in exam questions. Help them out by including short and clear descriptions of the expected skills and knowledge for the exam, or even for each question.

Preparing for Review Once you know what questions you will be asking on your exam, you can start preparing a review to help your students. Ideally, you should give your students some kind of practice activity for each of the skills or knowledge you wish to test on the exam. Working from your questions, try to identify what a student will need to know and what skills they will need to have in order to be able to successfully respond to the question. Some of your questions might require students to be able to do and know a number of things. By identifying all the things a student needs to know to answer a question you can start to develop activities that will scaffold their learning to help them master the knowledge they need. Your review activities shouldn’t just go over important information but should try to give students the chance to apply the knowledge and skills they will be tested for on the exam. This will give them a chance to make mistakes and hopefully learn from them before they have to put it down on an exam. If you don’t have time to do review activities in your class, try to give students worksheets, activities, or practice exams to do at home and encourage them to work on the activities together in study groups. The Learning Centre also has a number of great resources to help students with everything from preparing for successful study techniques to dealing with exam anxiety. Consider sharing the link to their tipsheets with your students or hand out copies of sheets you think would be pertinent to your class.

BSET students and faculty raise $160 for cancer research

The students and faculty of Building Systems Engineering Technology have raised 160$ to support men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues. Mo Bros take action by growing a moustache throughout the 30 days of November.

But it’s more than an excuse to grow a fine piece of moustachery, it’s about creating conversations while raising funds and awareness for men’s health. S.T.A.R. Program Reminder

The deadline for the submissions of S.T.A.R. applications is to Wednesday, December 10, 2014. As a brief reminder, the S.T.A.R. program is an initiative meant to recognize student volunteering and involvement during the semester. If a student puts in 60+ hours of unpaid work and fills out the

application form, they receive a note on their official CÉGEP transcript as such. We are continuously looking to increase student awareness and enrolment in the S.T.A.R. program, as we believe this can only be beneficial for students.

To the teachers and staff that work closely with student volunteers, we would ask that you please inform and remind your students about the S.T.A.R. program. If you know of a student doing volunteer work, believe a student is particularly involved or they mention something about volunteering, they should be personally told about the program as well. If ever a student asks you about the S.T.A.R. program, tell them what you can about the program but please refer them to our website, http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/star-program/, and to Didier Brûlé-Champagne in F-540A.

New Research Funding Opportunity

Le gouvernement du Canada annonçait vendredi dernier le lancement d’un projet pilote pour la recherche collégiale : Le Fonds d’innovation sociale destiné aux communautés et aux collèges. Soucieuse de contribuer à la promotion de cette nouvelle initiative fort attendue par les chercheuses et chercheurs de collège, l'ARC tiendra par Internet, le 17 décembre 2014, de 13 h 30 à 15 h 30, une séance d’information sur ce nouveau programme.

Administré par le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH), le Fonds d’innovation sociale destiné aux communautés et aux collèges est doté d’un budget de 15 millions de dollars sur trois ans. Il vise à permettre l’accroissement de la capacité des établissements d’enseignement collégial à participer à des projets concertés avec des organismes communautaires et des entreprises afin d’aborder des problèmes sociaux. Quels en sont les objectifs? À quelles exigences les établissements doivent-ils satisfaire? Quels types de partenariat sont attendus de leur part? Voilà quelques-uns des sujets qui figurent à l’ordre du jour de la séance d’information proposée par l’ARC à l’intention des établissements d’enseignement collégial, publics comme privés, de même qu’aux regroupements de recherche ou de transfert, y compris les centres collégiaux de transfert de technologie. Puisque les demandes auprès du CRSH doivent respecter les objectifs visés par les programmes Savoir et Connexion, ou une combinaison des deux, les grandes lignes de ces occasions de financement seront exposées. Si l’on ne peut assister à la séance en ligne du 17 décembre, il sera possible de la visionner en mode asynchrone, et ce, jusqu’à six mois après sa tenue. Dans le cadre de ses Belles Rencontres, qui auront lieu à Québec, le 9 janvier prochain, l’ARC a également inscrit une brève présentation du Fonds d’innovation sociale destiné aux communautés et aux collèges à l’horaire de la journée. Des membres de la Direction des programmes de recherche du CRSH seront alors sur place pour rencontrer le milieu scientifique collégial et répondre à ses questions. Rappelons que l’ARC a lancé, dans le cadre de l’édition 2014 de ses Belles Rencontres, un ensemble de fiches d’information sur les organismes subventionnaires de la recherche. Il est possible de télécharger Les organismes subventionnaires de la recherche à partir de la page d’accueil du site Internet de l’Association. Ce document présente la configuration d’ensemble des organismes et contient des hyperliens qui conduisent aux sept fiches portant sur chacun des principaux organismes – dont le CRSH –, qui appuient la recherche à l’échelle québécoise comme canadienne. Bonjour à tous et à toutes! Voici notre dernière capsule linguistique pour la session d’automne 2014. La semaine prochaine, nous annoncerons le nom du gagnant ou de la gagnante du concours. Voici les réponses de l’exercice de la semaine dernière :

1. Il SE pourrait que le prince sauve Cendrillon. 2. CE chat appartient à ma tante et il SE nomme Félix. 3. Il arrivera CE soir. 4. Il SE trompe lorsqu’il SE croit supérieur! 5. Il SE peut que CE monde soit cruel.

Bravo à tous ceux et celles qui ont participé au concours! Cette semaine, l’exercice est de niveau intermédiaire. Voici une nouvelle règle et l’exercice correspondant : Les pronoms « en » et « y ». Le pronom « en » remplace un nom introduit par de ou par un déterminant partitif (du, de la, des, de) ou indéfini (un, une, des, de). Il s’utilise aussi avec des verbes qui se construisent avec de, comme avoir besoin de, avoir envie de, parler de, rêver de, s’occuper de, etc. Ex. : « Vous avez envie de chocolat? Oui, nous en avons envie! » « Vous revenez du cinéma? Oui, nous en revenons à l’instant. » « Est-ce qu’il reste des œufs? Oui, il en reste cinq. » Le pronom « y » remplace un nom introduit par à, au, à la, à l’, aux ou par un nom de lieu. Il s’utilise avec des verbes qui se construisent avec la préposition à, comme penser à, s’intéresser à, participer à, etc. Ex. : « Est-ce que vous participez au tournoi de football? » « Oui, nous y participons. » « Est-ce que vous vous intéressez à l’art moderne? Oui, nous nous y intéressons. » Exercice Complétez les phrases suivantes avec le pronom « en » ou « Y » qui convient.

Master Teacher Program Consortium of Anglophone Colleges: Centennial, Champlain-Lennoxville-St Lambert-St Lawrence, Dawson, Heritage, John Abbott, Marianopolis, Vanier

A ccredited by the University of Sherbrooke at the

Master level, the Master Teacher Program is an

integrated program designed by Cegep teachers for Ce-

gep teachers. It supports the development of professional

competencies needed to be a reflective practitioner in

college education.

Three consecutive levels are available for participants: a

Graduate Certificate, a Graduate Diploma, and a Master

of Education. All courses are offered in English at local

Montreal Cegeps. The courses now offer an online

blended format for participants from outside the Montreal

region. While most classes are face-to-face, some classes

use a fully online format for all participants.

The Master of Education level curriculum is designed to

prepare participants to design and implement research

projects that will increase their understanding of how

their professional decisions impact on their work with

students, colleagues, and the institutions they serve.

PERFORMA (PERfectionnement et FORmation des MAî-

tres) is a cooperative venture of the Ministry of Education

(subsidy), the University of Sherbrooke (central administration

and accreditation) and the local colleges (program develop-

ment and local administration). This program is unique in that

the courses are designed to suit the Cegep milieu and the needs

of college teachers.

1. PED-601: College Teaching and Course Design

Educational concepts, beliefs, values, practices, issues, philosophies and outcomes associated with learner-centered teaching are examined while designing, devel-

oping and evaluating a college level course.

2. PED-602: Assessment as Learning

Participants apply the concept of curriculum alignment and performance based assessments while focusing on improving student learning. Cegep teachers will

increase awareness and understanding of how they can support student learning through assessment.

Prerequisite: PED-601 College Teaching and Course Design

3. PED-604: Instructional Strategies for Active Learning

Participants examine different ways to use small groups and the instructional challenges these approaches often present. Principles and strategies for working with

casual groups, cooperative groups, and team-based learning groups are also examined.

4. PED-609: Teaching with Technology, Level 1

This course is designed to help teachers blend educational theory with digital tools and media creation. This introductory course will provide a pedagogical basis

for using technology to promote student learning.

5. PED-618: Inclusion: Issues, Challenges and Solutions

Participants will gain an understanding of how to adapt their curriculum in order to integrate students with special needs into the college classroom. They will also

examine the history of inclusion and how the idea has evolved into current local, national and international policies.

6. COL-855: Constructing Knowledge In Your Discipline

The purpose of this course is to connect each teacher’s content knowledge with the theoretical and practical knowledge about teaching and learning that has been

acquired in the preceding courses in the program. Its primary purpose is to allow for a detailed analysis and integration of principles, theories and assumptions about learning and instruction that underlie expert knowledge and competence in different disciplines.

7. MEC-802: Designing a Research Proposal, tutorial

An independent study course in which participants draft, edit, and write their research proposal under the direction of their supervisor. During the process, they

receive regular feedback on their project from their supervisor. Prerequisite: MEC-801 Exploring Research Strategies

8. MEC-803: Critiquing a Research Proposal

A seminar where participants share their research proposal with others. They have an opportunity to receive constructive criticism and use the feedback to improve

their own proposal. Prerequisite: MEC-802 Designing a Research Proposal
