We do have highly sophisticated ships comparing with yester years.

We switched from sail to steam, steam to diesel, from diesel to LNG, sextants to GPS , from wireless radio to satellite communications so on and so forth.

Technological development should ease out and pave a seamless operation.

As per the international management code for the safe operation of ships and for pollution prevention (ISM Code) adopted by IMO Resolution A.741(18)- The reason for accident at sea is due to human error (95%), machinery failure (4%) and AOG (1%)

Entry into Enclosed Spaces

Volumes have been written in IMO/SOLAS/P & I Club Circulars about this hazard.

As per MAIB Safety Bulletin 2/2008, since 1991, with responses from 18 Administrations 120 fatalities and 123 injuries due to entry into confined spaces. This statistics excludes 3 casualties on board Sava Lake and Saga Rose.

But this hazard continues to be a serious concern on board the ships and accidents still take place.

Basis of Containerization is to mitigate multiple points of handling of cargo and thus to minimize losses. But statistics proves other way.

Mr. Malcom P Mc Lean may have taken a back, if he were alive to see the results.

While going through Overseas Cargo Policies, I often wonder, why they cover up to CIF, Indian Sea Port.

Road conditions, driving conditions etc might be the reason for not extending warehouse to warehouse cover.

Why CIF Seaport ?

Steel Rollers were stuffed into container without lashing and choking.

During voyage , steel rollers moved so vibrantly.

Rollers Pierced open the side paneling.

Landed on the container below in the tier and damaged roof.

You may all aware that as per SOLAS regulations w.e.f 01/07/2016, Shippers of cargo have to provide VGM (Verified Gross Mass) of cargo.

Mr. Chris Welsh, Secretary General of Global Shipper Forum even criticized whether SOLAS stands for ‘Serial Opportunities for Levying Additional Surcharges)

See how much resistance for implementation of a safety requirement ?

Being a Teetotaler , I support loud and cry for Alcohol policy. But my Sr. Colleague Mr. P.Sridharan whenever surveying P & I Pre-entry Condition survey, feels pity for present day seafarers.

A colleague of mine, got into Alcoholic habit, because a lady officer offered him a hard drink and he had no guts to refuse.

Modern Business English Dictionary terms tax levied on Alcohol, Smoking, Gambling etc as SIN TAX.

Practicing yoga can be a best thing a provider can do for himself/herself

Doing simple “Pranayam” (breathing technique) in breaks can calm their mind.

Practicing yoga for ½ hr. a day can make their body fit to take care of others.

Yogic thought process- will teach not to work only for

money which can increase human values and self discipline
