Humane Society of Lincoln County SPRING 2016 Emergency Shelter Evacuation On March 28th, the Moon Mountain fire broke out in the mountain village of Ruidoso, New Mexico. The fire, located above Gavilan Canyon, necessitated an evacuation of 37 animals from the Ruidoso Animal Shelter. While we have an emergency plan in place and successfully evacuated all of the animals to our resale shop, we did not have enough crates to transport our dogs. Volunteers and staff loaded animals into their vehicles. While this works in an emergency, it is not safe to have a loose animal in the car, especially one that is afraid and confused. For safety reasons for both the animals and the drivers, we require additional large and medium dog crates. Prior to the Moon Mountain fire we have experienced three small fires this year and fire season has only just begun. We have enough small kennels to transport our small dogs and cats. However, our immediate need was to purchase an additional 15 extra large dog crates and 10 large crates to ensure that our animals may be transported safely when the next fire threatens our shelter. A GoFundMe drive had recently been established asking for donations to purchase these large crates. As of 4/7/15, we have exceeded our $2500 goal! The money will go towards the crates that are desperately needed. The dogs, cats, staff and volunteers of the Ruidoso Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of Lincoln County, New Mexico, thank you for your support! Emergency Shelter EvacuationOn March 28th, the Moon Mountain fire broke out in the mountain village of Ruidoso, New Mexico.

However, our immediate need was to purchase an additional 15

extra large dog crates and 10 large crates to ensure that our animals may be transported safely when the next fire threatens our shelter. A GoFundMe drive had recently been established asking for donations to purchase these large crates. As of 4/7/15, we have exceeded our $2500 goal! The

Happy Tail Story by MitchHi! My name is Mitch! I wanted to say Thank You for finding me the perfect home. You guys found me in an abandoned house and gave me lots of love, shelter, great food, etc. Then this lady came into the shelter and decided to take me home. I was unsure at first but after a few days I realized I had a great home. I have to say that at times I just can't help myself in doing something since my new mom works during the day and I still have a lot of puppy in me. I’ve discovered I could jump 6 foot rock walls! It was so much fun until my mom added 4 more feet, so I can't do that anymore. I’ve then discovered magazines and how much fun they were. My new mom taught me I can't do that either. So, she got me some real cool toys to play with! She has been teaching me lots and lots of new things like: sit, down, stay, verbal and hand commands, what is hers and what is mine, etc. I get to go to the doggie park twice a week and have made lots of new friends there as well. The backyard is so much fun and I have a doggie door that I can use at any time. I hear my mom tell people that I am the making of a GREAT DOG! I just want to say thank you again for finding me a great and loving home. Mom has been very patient with me as I think she knows I have been through a lot in the past, but now I hardly even think about the bad things. I also love my new sister, Boo.

Another Happy Tail Story by Cutter’s New Owner"Cutter came to us with a willingness to learn. He knows how to sit on a tractor and waits for Tommy to get on and go for a ride. He also likes to ride in the pickup to get the mail and he is comical! By the end of the day he gets in his kennel on his own - all pooped but ready to start another day. Our thanks to your staff/volunteers and the care they give to the animals that come to the shelter. They are well fed and cared for. Cutter is a blessing to us and to have a dog to go with Milo our cat. They still have their differences but their relationship is coming along."

Ruidoso Animal Shelter Wish ListPopping down to the store for a few household supplies or goodies for your four-legged friends? Taking a trip to Costco or Sam’s Club? Consider picking up a few items for our Animal Shelter. Dollars saved on day-to-day cleaning supplies, pet food and other necessities can be redirected for vet care and grooming so that the animals in our shelter will be healthy, clean and happy, which makes them even more adoptable.

These are the most commonly needed items:

Cleaning Supplies: Pine-sol, bleach, antibacterial Windex, disinfectant wipes, dish soap, paper towels, dish scrub pads, trash bags (13 gallon & 55 gallon), disinfectant spray, laundry soap, toilet bowel cleaner and antibacterial spray with bleach.

Animal Supplies: dog/cat toys, dog/cat treats, blankets, towels, cat litter, collars, leashes, harnesses, litter boxes, cat water and food bowls, metal dog water and food bowls, canned dog/cat food, puppy/kitten canned food.

Clip & save this in your wallet so the next time you are shopping, you can pull it out and see if there is something that you might pick up and donate to the shelter. It’s a simple way to help our furry friends without breaking the bank. Our shelter is grateful for all types of donations!

Walking a Shelter Dogby the Dog

When coming to the shelter to walk with me:

Wear something with deep pockets for poop bags and TREATS !!

Wear shoes suitable for a steep - maybewet, muddy or snowy path and driveway

I can be pretty strongAlways securely close doors in the kennel area

so I don't "get loose”Careful opening my kennel - I'm anxious to

go for a walk and maybe a little "pushy" Most of the walkers use slip leashes - make

sure I am secure as I can "escape"Keep a distance from other dogs being walked

I love your individual attention and canbe territorial

If you ask - and I know how - let me show you my tricks - "Sit", "Stay", "Kisses"

Please let me sniff along the trail but tell mewhen I need to "slow down"

Please have an "extra" treat and "good dog"praise when we get back to my temporary home

P.S. If I limp, scratch a lot, cough - act "off"

or my kennel needs attentionPlease notify "MY STAFF"

We are ALWAYS grateful for help walking the dogs

More walkers = More time for each dog

Shelter Pets and Your Health

Adopting healthy lifestyle changes can plays an important role in easing symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. Caring for a dog can help you make healthy lifestyle changes by: • Increasing exercise. Taking a dog for a walk,

hike, or run are fun and rewarding ways to fit healthy daily exercise into your schedule. Studies have shown that dog owners are far more likely to meet their daily exercise requirements-and exercising every day is great for the animal as well. It will deepen the connection between you, eradicate most behavior problems in dogs, and keep your pet fit and healthy.

• Providing companionship. Companionship can help prevent illness and even add years to your life, while isolation and loneliness can trigger symptoms of depression. Caring for a living animal can help make you feel needed and wanted, and take the focus away from your problems, especially if you live alone. Most dog and cat owners talk to their pets, some even use them to work through their troubles. And nothing beats loneliness like coming home to a wagging tail and wet kisses.

• Helping you meet new people. Dogs can be a great social lubricant for their owners, helping you start and maintain new friendships. Dog owners frequently stop and talk to each other on walks, hikes, or in a dog park. Dog owners also meet new people in pet stores, clubs, and training classes.

• Reducing anxiety. The companionship of a dog can offer comfort, help ease anxiety, and build self-confidence for people anxious about going out into the world. Because dogs live in the moment-they don't worry about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow-they can help you become more mindful and appreciate the joy of the present.

• Providing sensory stress relief. Touch and movement are two healthy ways to quickly manage stress. Stroking a dog lowers blood pressure and can help you quickly feel calmer and less stressed.

ENJOYING PETS Pets provide us with loyalty, companionship, love and affection, as well as the many physical and psychological benefits. The least we can do to repay this is ensure that we keep them in the best of health. A healthy pet is a happy pet and a happy pet can help us enjoy a much fuller and more rewarding life.

Much is happening with the Humane Society’s Capital Campaign. For example, we have expanded the scope of the campaign to $2.3 million, to include the mortgage on the property, initial improvements already pledged or paid by the Humane Society’s Resale Shop and Operations divisions and costs of clearing the land.  The Furr Ball committee just made a significant 5-year pledge as well!

Major gifts and pledge highlights to date include:

HSLC: $450,000Resale Shop Pledge: $250,000R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard Foundation: $200,000Furr Ball Pledge: $200,000Additional Pledges and gifts to date: $323,000We therefore have gifts and pledges totaling $1,423,000 leaving us with $877,000 or so to achieve our goal and finally break ground.

This April, we plan to begin developing the “Memorial Park” on the eastern-most portion of the new land, with the help of a crew from the National Civilian Community Corps, or NCCC. “Landscaping, more land clearing, construction of a Memorial Wall and beautification of our land will help attract more visitors and donors to the HSLC property” says Judith Gouch-Passmore, HSLC President.  HSLC is well on its way toward reaching the goal and building a brand new $1.5 Million intake and adoption center, which will have a huge impact on animal welfare in Lincoln County for decades to come.Volunteers are welcome to join the Capital Campaign Committee, and tours of the property – as well as donor packets and pledge forms - are available to the public upon request. For more information on the HSLC Capital Campaign, call Steve Duffy at 505.690.6915 or Nina Grunseth at 505-670-2209.
