It is well known that Muhammad did use seribes, that the Quranicutteranceswere recorded from his lips or after being memorized, andthat prior to the
Quranic experience he had not been either orater, poetor preacher .
Four persons are mentioned in the traditions as having collected the Quran in

It is also evident that revelations were recorded, because they arecalled Koran
itself Kitab i.e what is written or `scriptures
At the moment of inspiration or shortly after, each passage was recitedby

During the life-time of the Prophet, the Quran had all been written down but it
was not yet united in one place
It is almost certain that there were written collections of Quranicmaterials that
the Prophet had a part in creating and ordering.

We may upon the strongest presumption affirm that every verse in theKoran isthe genuine and unaltered composition of Muhammad himself, andconcludewith the least a close approximation to the verdict of VonHammer; that hold the
