Michael was brutally assaulted after attending a party in Montvale by five males. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center where he received trauma care. The injuries from this assault essentially ruined Mike’s 2008 golf season. The assailants were charged with aggravated assault.
On July 25, 2008, Mike was driving home at night with friends when he had a serious car accident. He was not wearing his seat belt and he was thrown from the vehicle. The other two occupants were wearing their seat belts and they walked away from the accident unharmed. Mike was rushed to The Hackensack University Medical Center where the trauma team performed an emergency craniotomy to relieve the pressure on his brain and stop the bleeding in his skull and he remained in a coma, on life-support for nearly three weeks. He suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) to the left temporal and parietal lobes of his brain along with many broken bones throughout his body. Mike spent the next twenty days in a coma and three weeks in the pediatric ICU at HUMC. On August 14th, Mike was transferred to Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ for acute rehabilitation treatment. He was released on September 24th and he still continues daily outpatient therapy. In March 2009, Michael resumed one high school class per day. He still hopes to graduate in June.
