OPTIMUM HUMIDITY IMPROVES PRODUCTIVITYHumidity control in the pharmaceutical industry is essential in many productionand testing processes to maintain quality and reduce waste.
Tablet coatingSuccessful coating of a tablet largelydepends on the composition of thetablet at the time of exposure to itscoating. If the tablet’s surface is too dry,due to incorrect humidity levels, thecoating will not adhere correctly.Likewise if the humidity post coating isnot optimal, the coating may dry toorapidly, detrimentally affecting itsproperties.
CleanroomsMany cleanroom manufacturingprocesses require control overhumidity. For instance, the printing ofdiagnostic strips using water basedinks can require a high humidity ofbetween 95-98%RH, ±1%RH. In suchcircumstances, when the optimumhumidity is so precise, it is often notpossible to maintain a whole room atsuch a close level so a contained micro-climate can be produced around anindividual manufacturing process.
Fluid Bed DryingConsistent and responsive humiditycontrol in FBD processes results in theproduct’s moisture content reachingthe target level more rapidly and withless wastage through over or underdrying. Close control steam humidifiersrunning on pure RO water can provide±2%RH and increase productivity whencompared to more tradition live steamhumidifiers mounted on fluid bed driers.
Stability testingRegulations on accelerated or long-term stability testing mostly requirehumidity to be controlled within atolerance of ±5%RH. If the condition ofthe atmosphere falls outside thiswindow, it can result in a test having tobe restarted. This is expensive and caneven delay the launch of a newproduct.
Static preventionLevels of humidity below 40%RH canlead to static build-up. The results ofthis include materials adhering to eachother on the production line and notlocating correctly inside of packaging.
A humidity level of between 55-65%RHwill significantly reduce the probabilityof electro static discharge, which isvital for sensitive electronic equipmentor where flammable gases orsubstances are being used.
Condair has a wide range ofhumidification systems to suit anypharmaceutical manufacturing orresearch facility. As well as close controlsteam systems, the range includes lowenergy adiabatic humidifiers that canreduce operating costs and a building’scarbon footprint.
Often the type of humidity controlrequired by pharmaceutical processesis not achievable with standardhumidifiers intended for offices ortypical manufacturing environments. Many models within the Condair rangehave options specifically designed foradvanced process applications.
This specialist range is combined withextensive expertise in the industry toensure Condair always recommendsand provides the most appropriatesolution for any pharmaceuticalproject.
