Humqadam-SCRP has come a long way since it started classrooms construction in November 2015. It has adopted 655 schools out of which 408 completed in Punjab and 247 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, as of 30 September 2018. To date, it has completed the largest volume of classrooms and facilities in any classroom addition project in Pakistan. With the construction of 2,137 new classrooms and 1,878 toilet facilities for students, Humqadam-SCRP is contributing in reviving the educational experience of millions of children coming from the most humble backgrounds. Currently, active in 786 schools Humqadam-SCRP is contributing to a safe, secure and equitable school infrastructure across both provinces. The programme is on track to further add a substantial number of classrooms and facilities by September 2019 and is working with more than 70 Pakistani building contractors across 17 districts of Punjab and KP provinces. Humqadam-SCRP continues to both support and challenge all of its contractors to deliver quality classrooms and facilities. The project supports the contractors to succeed at multi-site management, optimal use of available resources and building better quality even in remote locations. MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM LEADER

With this latest edition of the newsletter, I would like to take the opportunity to share the

achievements of the quarter that ended on 30 September 2018.

Humqadam-SCRP has come a long way since it started classrooms construction in November 2015. It

has adopted 655 schools out of which 408 completed in Punjab and 247 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)

province, as of 30 September 2018. To date, it has completed the largest volume of classrooms and

facilities in any classroom addition project in Pakistan. With the construction of 2,137 new classrooms

and 1,878 toilet facilities for students, Humqadam-SCRP is contributing in reviving the educational

experience of millions of children coming from the most humble backgrounds. Currently, active in 786

schools Humqadam-SCRP is contributing to a safe, secure and equitable school infrastructure across

both provinces.

The programme is on track to further add a substantial number of classrooms and facilities by

September 2019 and is working with more than 70 Pakistani building contractors across 17 districts of

Punjab and KP provinces. Humqadam-SCRP continues to both support and challenge all of its

contractors to deliver quality classrooms and facilities. The project supports the contractors to

succeed at multi-site management, optimal use of available resources and building better quality even in

remote locations. Close collaboration with local school communities continue to contribute to an

increased sense of ownership for schools with new classrooms and facilities. This has simultaneously

resulted in innovative local initiatives to further improve the learning environment.

This quarter, we had a high profile visit by Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls, Dr. Sharman

Stone to the Government Girls Higher Secondary School Chamkani, District Peshawar, KP province. In

this well-rounded visit, she toured a newly constructed block and interacted with young school girls.

She signaled the importance of girls' education and served as a sign of encouragement for young girls

to continue their educational aspirations by planting a sapling and unveiling the plaque at the new

academic block.

Humqadam-SCRP, is managed by IMC Worldwide, is a part of the £420.5 million Punjab Education

Support Programme (PESP) II and the £283.2 million Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Sector

Programme (KESP). These large and ambitious programmes represent a collaborative effort between

DFID, Australian Government (contribution in KP province only), and the provincial governments to

result in more children in school and better learning outcomes.

Australia's Ambassador for Women and Girls, Dr. Sharman Stone, visited the Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS) Chamkani, District Peshawar, KP province, on 18 September 2018. Funded by the Australian Government and UK aid, Humqadam-SCRP, under the larger umbrella of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Sector Programme (KESP), has provided this school five new classrooms, 11 new toilets, two staff rooms, four science labs, one IT lab, and a principal's office.

As Ambassador Stone promotes gender equality and empowerment of women and girls in Australia and internationally. Prior to her appointment as Ambassador in 2017, she had a distinguished 20 year career in the Australian Parliament.

The Ambassador was accompanied by Annemarie Reerink, Director of Gender Strategy, Effectiveness and Performance Unit, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia; Hannah Birks, Second Secretary Australian High Commission, Pakistan; and Najma Khan, Programme Manager Gender, Australian High Commission, Pakistan. The guests were greeted with enthusiasm by the school’s Principal Ms. Farzala Lalsher, students, and Humqadam-SCRP representatives. The Ambassador was given a brief introduction of the programme and its contributions to the school.

The Ambassador toured the newly constructed block while the principal talked about the challenges and opportunities in girls' education, and

the difference in the educational experiences of the new school’s building. The chief guest proceeded for an interactive session with students in their classrooms. Excited and curious students volunteered to ask questions from the chief guest about her school life in Australia. In return, the chief guest also posed questions to the students about their aspirations. This conversation brought encouragement

and energy to the young girls to continue achieving their academic goals.

Afterwards, the Ambassador planted a tree sapling in the courtyard as a show of her green thumb to healthier environment. She also unveiled the plaque at the new block, which signalled the importance of girls' education and served as a sign of encouragement for young girls to continue their educational aspirations.

HIGHLIGHTS

* Australian Government is significantly contributing through the Humqadam-SCRP in KP Province only.

“I would consider every day working at the school site as a new learning experience in terms of the innovative

techniques that can be used in construction. I also felt that the health and safety compliance was a hassle initially, but with time I realised how many accidents we avoided. I felt

very proud as I had a part to play in improving our community school”

Arif Khan, is a brick mason, was a part of construction team at Government

Girls' Comprehensive Model Higher Secondary School Timergara, Lower Dir
