These funds help to send KANU’s Makahiki champions to Molokaÿi’s Makahiki competition and celebration, and help provide the needed funds for planning next year’s makahiki events. KANU’s ÿAha Haumäna (Student Council) will be hosting a spirit week January 27th through January 31st, 2014. All students are encouraged to show their school spirit and hui spirit by dressing-up daily according to the selected theme. During spirit week, students may come to school in pajamas on Monday, should dress in pink for cancer awareness day on Tuesday and dress as their favorite Disney character or super hero on Wednesday. Students can be creative and have fun with Thursday’s flash to the past theme and should pair up with a friend for twin day on Friday. Encourage your keiki or ‘öpio to participate but please help to see that outfits are appropriate. Students are encouraged to pack a KANU polo shirt with shorts or pants to change in to if outfits are inappropriate or get uncomfortable. All students not participating in spirit week dress-up days should be in a KANU uniform polo shirt. I’d like to also take this opportunity to remind both students and parents about KANU’s school uniform policy. KANU’s uniform is a solid colored collared shirt or blouse with the school’s printed logo. Students are to wear their uniform polo shirt on a daily basis unless we have announced otherwise (spirit week dress-up days, dress-up Fridays, Halloween, etc…). Quite a few lower elementary students have been noted for their non-compliance with our school dress code. Parents, we need your help with this. Please know that older students are given detention and asked to change to a “borrowed” polo shirt from our school office if they do not have a KANU polo shirt on. PAPA HÄPUÿUPapa Häpu‘u had a very busy second quarter. We came back to school this month ready to work and have been working on goal setting for this new year. Haumäna spent time reflecting on the past year and setting new, reasonable goals for 2014.

The best things that happened in 2013 were:

“The Ravens won the Super Bowl!” ~ Keawe Tolentino and Blaysin Bernard-Erece

“Getting to visit the volcano and the Panaewa Zoo.” ~ Sam Landers

“Visiting the water park on O‘ahu. It was scary!” ~ Evan Nauka

“Getting a golf cart for a birthday present.” ~ Kawela Takushi

“I got a horse and kittens.” ~ Moani Plunkett

“My ‘ohana getting a 4-wheeler and visiting Kaua‘i.” ~ Marty Ka‘au‘a

“Winning Uma for the 3rd year in a row at Kä Waimea Makahiki!” ~ Keawe Tolentino

Nä haumäna learned the importance of stretching their bodies before rigorous exercise in preparation for Makahiki.

Kawela, Moani, Kaÿipü, Kaulike and Bethany showing off their creation of an animal cell during Science class.

Asher Mendes contemplates his next move during a P.E.

Game.

In November, haumäna like Rusty Jose expressed how thankful they were for all their blessings in the form of a thankful tree.

Blaysin Bernard-Erece and Rusty Jose show true concentration during their turn at Könane.

Something I am going to try

to stop doing this year is…

“Talking back to my parents.” ~ Jayden Brewer-Smith

“Tattling on other people.” ~ Bethany Stimac

“Stop annoying my brother.” ~ Naila Pahi‘o

“Stop talking so much.” ~ Sadie Kawamoto

“Eating too much sugar.” ~ Della Stallsmith

“Taking such long showers.” ~ Kupono Sarsona

“Stop talking when adults are talking.” ~ River Carpenter-Horsley

Third graders in Papa Häpuÿu are very supportive of each other.

könane skills in preparation for Makahii.

Keawe Tolentino demonstrates what it means to külia i ka nuÿu during his turn

at uma, making him a four time champion in the event

My one wish for 2014 is:

“To get an iPad.” ~ Cheye Velez

“To get an ATV.” ~ Kaulike Kawamoto

“To be happy and healthy.” ~ Kina‘u Grace

“To go on a Disney Cruise.” –~Asher Mendes

“To move to Uruguay in South America.” ~ Kai Lacy

“To have more P.E. classes.” ~ La‘amai Puhi

“To collect all the Halo games and toys because Halo is my favorite X-Box game.” ~ Seth Francis

We all set goals and resolutions, some of them we keep and others we hana hou for various reasons. As we reflect about the events of 2013, we wish everyone peace and happiness for 2014. Our students express “mahalo i ka mea loa‘a” as they wish for happiness and health. They express “aloha kekahi i kekahi,” even though they annoy or tease their siblings. The students remember “mälama i kou kuleana” when they strive to achieve a 75% or better on KidBiz. They also “kökua aku, kökua mai” when it comes to reminding each other to stay focused in class and pay attention to the teacher. These are just a small array of examples that keep us going as a hui and an ‘ohana.

My goals for 2014 are…“To learn all the games on the X-Box 1, be able to pay for my own iPhone, and learn how to use a

PSP control.” ~ Rusty Jose

“To do better on my homework, come to school earlier, and go to bed at 8 p.m.” ~ Calleigh-Rose Lee

“To stop talking so much, get better at swimming, and become a better speller.” ~ Mauloa Thompson

“To have fun, learn more, and ride my horse more often.” ~ Pakalana Ha‘o

“To read more, get an A+ on each test, and get a 75% or higher on KidBiz.” ~ La‘amai Puhi

“Listen more, pay closer attention to my kumu, and stay focused in class.” ~ La‘ipü Hing

“We want to fill up our marble jar so we can have a marble party, get all of our homework done on time, and be successful in all we do!” ~ Nä haumäna o Papa Häpu‘u
