T he Hunter Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service will soon have a doctor and paramedic on onboard
thanks to a long-awaited funding boost announced by the NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, last week.
$4.8 million was announced for the provision of doctors on helicopter missions in the Hunter, with a further $2 million to go towards the New England/North West service, providing aero-medical protection to much of northern NSW.
Prior to the announcement, the service was forced to rely upon ambulance paramedics, which could cause delays.
The change is part of a list of reforms announced by the NSW Government that will also see medical and paramedical crew on call 24/7 at the Newcastle Helicopter Base from January 2014 and a dedicated emergency retrieval ambulance available to support rapid road retrievals.
Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service general manager, Richard Jones, was doubtful the new system would be up and running by January but said the announcement was nonetheless great for the community.
“We’ve been pushing for four or five years for this and we always said we’d take whoever they could send us, but to get the rolled-gold standard of a doctor and a paramedic is great news for us and for the community,” he said.
“Having a doctor and paramedic means we’ll be able to undertake all sorts of missions and there will be
fewer time delays which is better for patients.”
Maitland MP Robyn Parker welcomed the changes to the service.
“More paramedics and doctors
on every flight, faster response times and better outcomes for Hunter patients is great news for our community and will help to save lives,” Ms Parker said.
The changes to the Hunter service will bring it in line with NSW Health Department standards, which requires a doctor and paramedic on every rescue flight.

Maitland Councillor Philip Penfold has called upon Maitland City Council to more closely regulate the charity and commercial clothing bins that are spread across the city.
In a question posed to last night’s council meeting, Councillor Penfold asked if anything was being done to act on illegal dumping around the bins, particularly in instances where trip hazards were being created.

Uni students have always been poor,
haven’t they?
Uni students have always been poor.
That’s certainly the pop culture stereotype we’re
presented with in movies and TV shows. It’s just the norm, right?
It doesn’t have to be.A recent study of 12,000 full-time
= and postgrad uni students in this country showed that two-thirds of them are living below the poverty line.
The Universities Australia study revealed that just over a fifth of respondents had an annual income of less than $10,000, and a further 40.3 per cent, so around half, earned between $10,000 and $19,000. Weekly? That’s roughly $192 to $365.
When you look at the cost of living, especially in the major cities, of course it doesn’t add up. With rent, bills (phone, internet, utilities, groceries, medical), transport costs, clothing, and the cost of uni materials to pay, it’s no wonder people in the industry are calling it a crisis.
I was lucky enough to be able to live at home while I went to uni. My uni was only a few minutes from my parents’ place in Sydney, and they
were happy to have me there. While this arrangement
sometimes curtailed the undergrad experience, it meant I could live a nice existence, do casual work and start my post-uni working life relatively debt free.
But, not everyone has this option.So, what’s the answer to getting
our uni students, the future leaders of business, industry and the arts, out from below the poverty line?
Is it:A) Increasing youth allowance
paymentsB) Lowering the age of
independence to qualify for
Government supportC) Ensuring affordable housing is
accessible to uni students D) All of the above.Hint: D. ***It was pleasing to hear last week
that the NSW Government has dedicated new funding to allow a doctor and paramedic on all Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service flights in the Hunter. We all know of people who have had to use this wonderful service, and it’s fantastic to know that it is now even better equipped to continue the important work.
It also brings the Hunter service in line with State standards – always a good thing!

While I belong to the camp that’s inexplicably excited about the whole thing, it’s time it arrived.

“I’ve received four complaints from the community about this in the last fortnight,” Councillor Penfold said.
“Council needs to make an assessment – are they being emptied as frequently as they should be? Can Council remove the bins?”
Council’s Executive Manager Planning, Environment and Lifestyle, Bernie Mortomore, said that the issue has been the focus of current investigations.
“At present a bin audit is being prepared throughout the city,” Mr Mortomore said in his report.
“Where a bin is identified that is not approved, action to remedy that will be taken.”
However, Councillor Penfold believes that the larger issue is that the community is not aware that all clothing bins benefit charities.
“I believe that at least a third, or even possibly half of the clothing bins in this city are commercially operated – that is, they are run for profit.”
Although regulations state that each bin must prominently display whether it is for charitable or commercial benefit, Councillor Penfold believes that people do not understand the difference.
“That is a distinction that people need to be aware of.”
Councillor Penfold said that a prime example can be seen at a clothing bin on the corner of Swan and Tank Streets in Morpeth.
“The bin is in a prominent spot on a historic lot,” he said.
“I think people believe that because it’s for charity, it can justify their dumping.”

I often write about the problems of crime and the issues associated with fighting it. Sometimes it may seem as if it is all doom and gloom,
with some members of the community disregarding the consequences of their actions and the impacts on others.
But often police are involved with the opposite type of event, where people carry out outstanding acts of honesty for purely altruistic reasons. Unfortunately these actions do not get the coverage they deserve.
On Friday I was involved in one such small event, where the actions of a member of the community had a positive impact on a small boy’s life. Earlier in the week, the 10-year-old lad had lost his new iPod touch at Birralee Park in Kurri Kurri. To the boy, this was a major event as the iPod was his pride and joy. Luckily for the boy, a mother who was playing with her children in the park found the iPod and handed it into police. Because the device was locked, police could not immediately return it.
On Friday afternoon the boy and his mother attended Maitland Police Station where I had the pleasure of ascertaining the boy owned the device
and returning it to him. It was a joy to hand the iPod back to the beaming child. The boy’s mother said to me that it confirmed her trust in people. The boy wished to thank the finder, and I conveyed those sentiments to her when
I told her of the outcome of her actions in handing in the property.
These type of events occur all the time. Most members of the community do go out of their way to do the right thing. Long may it continue.

Car parts, old piping and hunks of metal may not look like the materials a standard artist would use, but Greg Salter isn’t a
standard artist.The Telarah sculptor and screen printer
took out the top gong at the Nelson Bay Sculpture Festival earlier this month with a fish made entirely out of recycled materials.
“Lots of people find it hard to see past the scrap,” Mr Salter explained.
“But I just look at it and see material.”The sculpture, which Mr Salter estimates
to be approximately two metres long and one metre high or “the size of a lounge chair”, was constructed from brake parts, pipes, bobcat teeth, a hot water system and even the bottoms of fire extinguishers.
“A lot of my material is given to me by friends. I have a friend who drives a bobcat and gives me the teeth when he replaces them,” he said.
The Nelson Bay win is another highlight in Mr Salter’s 20-year career, having previously won the Newcastle Region Show Sculpture Prize and the Hunter Botanic Garden’s Outdoor Sculpture Prize, as well as regularly exhibiting around the State.
His work will remain in the Port Stephens area as a permanent installation.

U ntil the end of the month, residents have a chance to comment on the developed design for The Levee in
Central Maitland. A major component of this project
is the establishment of a shared way, where both pedestrians and vehicles can utilise the space that is currently the Maitland Heritage Mall.
It also includes a refurbishment of the space with new stone paving in the shared zone as well as landscaping, street furniture and lighting.
The second major component, subject to a future DA, features the construction of a River Link building to connect High Street to the Hunter River and a partial refurbishment of both the Riverside Walk.
This is the final time people will be able to comment on the project as a whole, and I recommend you do. Plans can be viewed at both Council’s Administration Building, at a window display currently set up in the mall and at www.maitlandyoursay.com.au
I strongly believe that this project could see real change occur in the city centre. I have said before, and I will again, that we need to stop expecting the mall to return to the space it was before it was originally closed to traffic in 1988.
Twenty five years have passed since that decision was made and our city has changed significantly in that time. So must we.
The growth of our city means growth in many areas. This can be seen by a report that was presented to Council last night, showing a number of capital works currently underway across the city.
Council is working in all areas of the city to improve the road network and make Maitland a safer place to live and work.
In the case of road works, Council ensures it notifies people who may be affected by the work and I urge residents and drivers to work in partnership with Council on all levels to allow work to occur in an efficient and effective manner.

This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a signifi cant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. T he Hunter Valley Research Foundation (HVRF) has named Newcastle Innovation CEO Dr Brent Jenkins as the new Chief
Executive of the Foundation, replacing the retiring Dr Wej Paradice AM.
Dr Jenkins, who has resigned from his role as CEO of Newcastle Innovation, the University of Newcastle’s non-profit research commercialisation arm, will take up the key HVRF position in November.
Chairman of the HVRF, Professor Eileen Doyle, congratulated Dr Jenkins on his appointment.
“We are delighted to have found an outstanding successor for the HVRF’s long-serving CEO, Dr Wej Paradice,” she said. “Dr Jenkins is well qualified for the role, with relevant experience in a non-profit research organisation and has an intimate understanding of the Hunter Region.”
Dr Jenkins said he is keen to work with the HVRF Board and staff to implement new directions and priorities for the organisation.
“It will be my role as CEO to ensure that the Foundation, based on avenues to create more value for its partners and the Hunter Region, demonstrates leadership as regional economic, social and environmental challenges arise,” he said.
“By being a trusted source of knowledge and advice, and acting in true partnership with other regional leaders, the Foundation can support real change that will sustain the Region into the future.”
Dr Jenkins holds a first class honours degree from the University of Newcastle and a PhD from the University of Oxford, both in the field of material science. He has a Master’s of Business Administration from INSEAD, France.
In addition to his academic qualifications, he has extensive and broad-based business experience including seven years as CEO of Newcastle Innovation.
Dr Jenkins was born and raised in Newcastle and is active within many local networks including HunterNet, Hunter Manufacturing Awards, Hunter Founders Forum and the Hunter Innovation Festival.

Funding for child care workers
Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon has urged local child care providers to apply for grants under a new $300 million
Federal Government Fund that will boost the wages of early childhood educators.
Guidelines to apply for the funding were released over the weekend by Early Childhood and Child Care Minister Kate Ellis, with applications for grants opening yesterday (Tuesday, July 23).
“The early childhood professionals are some of the hardest working in the area,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“This Fund will deliver real increases to wages and help will go some way to recognising the professionalism and qualifications of this highly valued workforce.”

T hese days, sizing is so varied between brands that not a single person can confidently say “I am a size
eight”. It is not unusual to be a size 10 in one brand and a size 12 or 14 in another.
The variation in sizes can be frustrating, but a two-minute trip to the fitting room can fix that because the most important thing about choosing your clothes is that you choose something that fits.
Too often I will walk into a store, pick up a top and buy it without trying it on, just because I can’t be bothered to hit the fitting rooms.
More often than not, I take it home only to discover that it isn’t the right size or that it doesn’t suit my body shape and it will sit in my wardrobe for years.
Now I know you are all thinking; “Why don’t you just wear it, who cares if it doesn’t fit? What a waste.”
Wearing something that doesn’t fit you correctly is the worst thing that you could possibly do (in fashion terms!).
Too many times I have seen girls
walking around in pants that are two sizes too small, tops that are hanging off them and jackets that they can barely move in.
Even men rock around in jeans that are... erm... constricting.
It doesn’t matter if they are your favourite pair of jeans; if your skin bulges over the top (some call it love-handles or a muffin-top) they are too small and shouldn’t be worn.
There’s a popular belief that smaller, tighter clothing makes you look thinner... Wrong! It simply accentuates any lumps or bumps that you think you might be hiding.
The same goes for clothing that is too big. It is just unflattering.
Clothes come in different sizes so that we can pick and choose something to suit our body shape and size correctly.
Remember that no-one but yourself will know what size you are wearing, so rather than going for something too tight just because you will feel smaller, choose something that is comfortable and the right fit – you will notice the change instantly!

regular bedtimes could help boost their brain power.
Researchers have found that inconsistent bedtimes are linked to children’s cognitive development and warned that there could be ‘knock-on’ health effects throughout life.
The authors wanted to assess whether the time a child went to bed, and the consistency of bed times, had any impact on their intellectual performance, measured by testing their reading, maths and spatial awareness.
The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, examined more than 10,000 children who are taking part in the Millennium Cohort Study – a long-term study of children born in the UK between September 2000 and January 2002.
The research was drawn from regular surveys and home visits made when the children were three, five and seven, to find out about family routines, including bedtimes.
When children were three, almost one in five had irregular bedtimes, but the figure reduced to less than one in 10 when the children were older.
By the age of seven, more than half the children went to bed regularly between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
Children without regular bedtimes and who were put to bed after 9pm tended to come from more socially disadvantaged backgrounds, the researchers said.
They found that seven-year-old girls who had irregular bedtimes had lower scores on all three aspects of intellect assessed, compared to children who went to bed at a regular time, but the effect was not found in boys.
Irregular bedtimes at age three were associated with lower reading, maths and spatial awareness scores in both boys and girls.
Girls who had never had regular bedtimes at ages three, five and seven had significantly lower reading, maths and spatial awareness scores than girls who had had consistent bedtimes.
For boys, this was the case for those having non-regular bedtimes at any two ages.

W hat do you get when you put Frankie J Holden and Denise Drysdale, two of Australia’s most-loved entertainers, on the same stage? You get a big
arvo out that is sure to be chock-a-block full of singing, dancing, and unabashed hilarity.
Holden and Drysdale will be bringing their ‘Big Arvo Out’ show to Wests next month and Holden, who first came to national attention in the 70s with rock and roll revivalists Ol 55, told TE that punters could expect some refreshingly unpretentious entertainment.
“I would describe it as controlled chaos,” he laughed.
“For anyone that has followed Denise or myself throughout our careers will know that there will be a lot of laughs. In terms of the music, I’ll be doing some of the old Ol 55 stuff and some rock and roll and Denise, who is such a fantastic singer and very underrated in my opinion, will also be pulling out a few surprises. There’ll be costume changes, skits and a few stories – some of which might even be true.”
Holden, who made the leap from chartered accountancy to treading the boards in Ol 55, has carved out quite an eclectic niche for himself as a performer, actor and television presenter – not that he ever planned it that way.
“It’s just ridiculous – I’ve been doing this for 38 years, which is amazing, but I’ve always said that longevity is the best revenge,” he said.
“Mine is a classic case of letting life unfold – I never had any long-term plans and I kind of fell into the whole rock and roll thing. Actually, the good people at Price Waterhouse kind of made the decision for me when they let me go.”
Holden said the show would also be a bit of a reunion with his good mate Drysdale.
“Denise and I have worked together, on and off, for many years – we started on ‘In Melbourne Tonight’. We haven’t done anything together for a while so we’re both really excited about this show.”
After the ‘Big Arvo Out’ show, Holden said he would be deep in preparation for the second series of the Channel 7 hit drama ‘A Place to Call Home’, in which he plays the laconically rugged Roy Briggs.
“I’d say that I bring a kind of strange sexiness to the role,” Holden joked.
“That character is an absolute joy to play and he is based on all of my uncles. My mum grew up in Bendemeer in the New England Ranges and my uncles were all men of the land – they’d all ride like the devil and be out skinning rabbits and things like that. But I just love getting into the dialogue, rhythm and cadence of the way my uncles spoke. It’s an absolute pleasure.”

Urban foraging may be the latest eco-trend sweeping Sydney’s inner city suburbs, but two Hunter seniors were doing it before those
city-based hipster foragers were even born.Janice Bellamy and Virginia Pisani both
have fond memories of picking wild berries for their families and maintain that living frugally is just as important today.
“What I notice nowadays is all the advertising that’s coming at us from every direction – buy this, buy that – why buy it? Do we actually need it? Can we do with the model of whatever it is we’ve got? Instead
of rushing out saying you’ve got to have the newest, you don’t,” Mrs Bellamy said.
“Whatever you can do for yourself, if you can do your own sewing, and certainly cook for yourself.”
Both ladies say they have passed on the behaviour they learnt from their parents to their children.
“My daughter, who is in her early 50s now and has a big family of her own, told me recently that stuff that she learned in our hard times was stood her in good stead ever since,” Mrs Pisani said.
Mrs Bellamy and Mrs Pisani will give a free talk on frugal living at Rutherford Library on Wednesday, July 31 at 6pm.

What a massive week for ECBC and the Hunter in our wonderful game of Lawn Bowls.
ECBC has just successfully hosted the P.B.A Trans Tasman Test Series at our great facilities. Crowds were treated to 4 days of International Bowls with the likes of World Champions Steve Glasson, Karen Murphy, Brett Wilkie and Ben Twist representing Australia.
On Day 1 we had the Australians taking on the ECBC Australian Indoor Singles Qualifiers in a challenge series. Five matches were played and ECBC prevailed 3-2 over the Australian side. [Michael Cronin d. Ben Twist; Marion Crump d. Karen Murphy; Marc Bender d. Steve Halmai; Simon Mitchell lost to Brett Wilkie; Jon Dimopoulos lost to Steve Glasson]
The Trans Tasman Challenge started on Monday at 12pm and a highlight was the performance of Amanda Lanesbury, who sang both country’s National Anthems.
After 5 hard-fought rounds over the next 2 days, Australia was dominant over the Kiwis, winning 4 matches
to 1. These preliminary rounds saw the top 3 ranked players from each country progress through to the 3 Finals on the Wednesday.
Australia finished with Brett Wilkie as number 1, Karen Murphy as number 2 and Steve Glasson as number 3.
The New Zealanders had Murray Glassey at 1, Mark Watt at 2 and Duane White in at number 3.
In a complete turnaround from the 5 preliminary rounds, the Kiwis blitzed the Australians 3-0 in the Final Series to take home the Trophy. [Duane White d. Steve Glasson 2 sets to 0; Mark Watt d. Karen Murphy 2 sets to 0; Murray Glassey d. Brett Wilkie 2 sets to 0.]
Congratulations to team New Zealand on a stunning victory and the great news was the announcement at the presentation ceremony that East Cessnock Bowling Club will once again host this brilliant event in 2014.
A very proud day for ECBC and a word of congratulations to all concerned who worked as a team to stage such a successful event.

Rock-star treatment Under 13 team to have their match called live on radio
N ineteen East Maitland Rugby League players will receive the rock-star treatment this weekend when ABC Radio broadcasts
their game live.The Under 13 Division 5 East Maitland
Griffins were recently announced as the winners of the 1233 Challenge Cup, a competition which saw Under 13 teams from Newcastle, Maitland, Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley, beating out finalists from Dudley, Cessnock and Dungog.
As the winners, their fixture against the Woodberry Warriors will be broadcast with commentary from ABC Grandstand’s Craig Hamilton. They also receive game day coaching from Newcastle Knights players.
Coach Jason Vile said that the win has not sunk in yet for the boys.
“At the moment we’re just focusing on training, but I’m sure they’ll be pretty excited come game day,” he said.
He also believes that this will be the icing on the cake for the team, who took a trip together to the first State of Origin match in Sydney and are also currently running second in their competition.
“We have a huge range of skill levels and size differences in the team, but they’ve really excelled and adjusted well. I think
