After a couple of weeks of rest and relaxation Hunter Sports High students are straight back into their school work and have a busy but exciting final term ahead. The school calendar is packed with excursions, exams and many end of year events where we will recognise and celebrate this year’s outstanding achievers. The final term is always a busy one but it is very exciting too as our Year 12 students sit their HSC exams and embark on their life after school. The exams started last Thursday so we’re a week in already and have two more weeks to go with the final exam for our students being Chemistry on November 3. I wish our Year 12 students all the very best with the remainder of their exams. I would like to congratulate Mr Mark Curry who has been appointed permanently to the position of Deputy Principal following the merit selection process at the end of last term. This position was vacant following my move to the Principal’s position and Mark’s appointment is testament to his experience at HSHS and the excellent work he has been doing with our Year 8 & 10 students in the relieving role. Mrs Sainsbury continues in her relieving DP role (Years 7, 9 & 11) and Mr Colley (DP Quality Teaching) continues to provide consultative and supportive leadership to staff and students with a focus on quality teaching, professional learning and innovative learning environments. As we get closer to the end of the year, Hunter Sports High staff are busy evaluating key programs, analysing results and planning for 2017. Next year will see a focus on assessment processes and procedures and innovative teaching practices and will see the introduction of STEM classes in Years 7 & 8 where students will be involved in innovative projects incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Much of our planning also focuses on getting ready for the commencement of construction of the new school, which is due to start in Term 2 next year. Work commenced during the school holidays to relocate the electrical substation, with new cables currently being laid and work continuing until January. The tender process for the construction of the new school buildings is due to be finalised in coming weeks. Finally, in school fashion news, I am very happy to advise that Hunter Sports High School uniforms can now be purchased at Lowes at Charlestown Square (as opposed to our own uniform shop). Lowes now exclusively stock all our everyday uniform items and PE shirts, making the purchase of uniforms much more accessible and convenient for our families as the store is open seven days a week. Online orders will also be available in the near future. Please note that additional TSP training uniforms can still be purchased online (link on our ‘School Uniform’ website page in the Parents & Students section). Last Days of Parent Survey

Our parent survey on student engagement can be completed online until Friday 21st October. Thank you to all who have taken the time to provide feedback already. If not, you've still got time. Just follow the link below to provide an insight into your child's experience at school and help us make practical improvements that will benefit the students of Hunter Sports High. https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/survey/splash/hshs1

Students Learn Skills in Critical and Creative Thinking

In collaboration with the Waiyarang Community of Schools, Hunter Sports High School is preparing our students to be learners for the future by promoting learning through critical and creative thinking skills. These include a series of strategies that enable students to think independently and connect to the world around them. These strategies equip our students to function highly beyond the classroom setting. Ask your child about these strategies and how they are helping them to learn about and question new ideas. Some of the strategies include cause and effect maps, bingo, Dictogloss, flow charts, Venn diagrams and Y-charts. Students will soon complete a survey to show how well they feel this learning style is helping them to learn.

The athletic genes in the MacPherson family run strong, with siblings Teah and Jai both qualifying for the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships after outstanding performances at the NSW All Schools Championships last week in Sydney.

Teah (Year 10) won gold in the 15 Years 200m Hurdles (28.75 seconds) and silver in the 100m sprint (12.25 seconds), while younger brother Jai (Year 8) claimed two silver medals in the 13 Years long jump (6.05m) and 100m (11.8 seconds).

Year 9 students Shanae McIntyre and Madeleine Brooks both collected bronze medals at the meet, placing third in the U14 and U15 Years hammer-throw.

Hunter Sports High was well-represented at the event with nine athletes competing in our school colours. Congratulations to the above athletes along with Chelsea Egginton, Aston Deans, Zac Hamilton, Ben Martin and Jay McIntyre on their terrific performances and representation of our school.

Good luck to Teah and Jai as they train for the Australian All Schools Championships. The dynamic duo will compete in Canberra from 2-4 December.

In other athletics news, our U15 Boys and U17 Girls teams took out the Schools Knockout Competition at the end of last term. Congratulations to the following team members:

Music Term Four will be another busy term, in class and out. Year 11 students have started their Year 12 HSC work and Mrs Ward is very excited with the talent of the students in her class. The class is self-motivated and constantly trying to improve their performance skills. It certainly will be an exciting year filled with brilliant performances. Year 7 and 8 are becoming proficient with their musical skills and are completing a great animation task on computers. Ukuleles have also become a big focus for some of our classes. Our school band will compete tomorrow in Bandfest, our local band competition. Band members are extremely excited and motivated this year thanks to the generosity of our school P & C who made a huge donation to enable the purchase of new uniforms for our band members. A big thank you to the P & C for supporting the music program and our band students. Good luck HSHS!

Japanese In a fun start to our final term, Hunter Sports High was fortunate to host a cohort of Japanese students from Saitama Misono Junior High School during Week 1. Twenty students and four teachers travelled from Saitama, a prefecture of Tokyo, and stayed with our welcoming families for four nights. During their time at HSHS, students participated in English lessons where they wrote postcards to their families, learned a traditional Aussie song, and even tried some iconic Australian foods. While Vegemite was not a popular choice, all students agreed that ANZAC biscuits and lamingtons were “yummy”! On Wednesday 12th October our Japanese visitors and their Australian hosts explored Blackbutt Reserve, feeding emus,

Banding Together for a Clash of Cultures meeting wombats and participating in one of the most

energetic soccer games we have had the honour of seeing – perhaps due to the Japan v Australia soccer match that aired the night before! Students were later treated to the picturesque views of the ANZAC memorial walk and a quick visit to Bar Beach to fill their shoes with sand and get a taste of Australian sunburn. Mrs Ingram and Ms O’Brien would like to thank the students, teachers, families and greater HSHS community for making this visit a success. We hope this marks the beginning of a strong relationship with Saitama Misono High School, as well as forging strong friendships between students from both our schools.

FACULTY NEWS: Science cont.

Term Four is off to a busy start in the Support Unit, with students deciding on their new personal interest topic and commencing work on creating mind maps, designing Google slideshows, developing learning plans and planning art projects. Staff are looking forward to student exhibitions at the end of term and are expecting the usual high standard of work. Parents and carers are always welcome to attend the exhibitions.

Our ‘Leaving To Learn’ excursions will continue every second Monday during Term 4 commencing in Week 3. Ms Streatfeild’s group will be swimming at Valentine Pool and the other two groups will be visiting a variety of community venues including Belmont Neighbourhood Centre, Caves Beach, Police and Ambulance Stations and The Wetlands.

Several students will be participating in work experience opportunities in our local community. Luke Dorman will be learning on the job at Fitness First, Byron McKenzie at Poppies and Brock Salter at Gerry Wubbels and Holden. We are very thankful to our local businesses for providing these valuable real life experiences for our students.

Ms Streatfeild’s Ruby Class have been planning some fishing trips for Term 4. They have been researching about good fishing spots, different bait to use and equipment needed. The trips will reinforce positive social skills including working as part of a team, following instructions and demonstrating respect and responsibility. Hopefully some of the students will be able to bring home dinner for the night!

The Ruby class are also in the process of organising a Halloween-themed cake stall which will be held on Monday 31st October. They are hoping to raise some funds towards a class excursion to the Car Museum at Gosford.

The Opal Cafe continues to be a big hit for lunch on a Friday for staff and parents. Thanks to the students from the Opal Class, Ms Stewart and Mr Rossetti for serving up delicious main meals and desserts. We look forward to seeing some new faces at the Café this term.

Finally our camp in Term 3 to Ton O’ Fun at Forster was action packed and enjoyed by all staff and students who attended.

Hunter Sports Attacks Central Coast Seven’s Tournament:

Hunter Sports High School heads to the Central Coast 7's youth tournament tomorrow with plenty of momentum and enthusiasm prior to the start of the serious 7's season. Going into November, there are places in the NSW Women’s, Girls’, Men’s and Boys’ teams that are up for grabs, and our students are right in the thick of things. On the Youth Boys side of things, our school will take an inexperienced yet skilful side to the tournament. As previous winners and runners-up in 2013 and 2014, the boys’ team returns with a team including Wildfire and Squad Captain, Jack McDermott and the back-up of some of the school's best Rugby League and Union players. The team takes on the ACT Brumbies and National Indigenous representative team in the pools. With the Youth Girls, our team is brimming with NSW hopefuls including NSW 7's development players Trudi Peterson and Emma Bradford. The team is one of the final hopefuls, and takes on the ACT Brumbies and Liverpool in the pool phases. The sides will be mentored by teachers Mr Scully, who is one of the NSW Youth coaches, and Ms Gilbert, who is one of the Senior NSW women's captains. Other NSW coaches will be on hand to select potential talent on the day. To compliment this, former students Synetta Manns, Hannah Southwell, Britney Duff and Tahliah Goldsmith (NSW Sevens players) will be playing during the weekend and our Principal Ms Byrne will be on-hand coaching as well. Ms Gilbert also makes the coach-player double up for the weekend. Get to http://centralcoastsevens.com.au/ for pre-ticket purchases, and to see the draws for all the youth and senior teams over the weekend. See the NBN story about the tournament at the following link: http://www.nbnnews.com.au/2016/10/18/countdown-to-

STUDENT WELFARE at HSHS: Keeping Our Students Safe This student welfare his page lets students, parents and carers know about some of the great programs and support services that are available to students and their families at Hunter Sports High School and in the local community. We hope you find it helpful and informative.

Quote of the Week:

Mental Health Day We celebrated World Mental Health Day on October 10. This important day brings attention to mental illness and its major effect on people’s lives. Just a reminder to all that there is plenty of support and information at Hunter Sports High if needed, including the Youth Room, Counsellors, Year Advisors, and Minimbah staff.

A Wealth of Programs This term we are offering many programs to help and target particular skills and benefit our youth at HSHS.

SHINE: a program that educates and empowers young women.

YOUTH FRONTIERS: aimed at young people who have the capacity to benefit from youth mentoring, focusing on leadership and civic engagement.

CENTRE FOR HOPE: empowering young people to respect, connect and create.

HUNTER HEALTH PROGRAM: a program dealing with respect and positive relationships.

ROCK AND WATER: providing young people with a pathway to self-awareness and increased self-confidence.

Lunchtime Activities These will continue this term and include cricket, skipping, board games and Uno, crocheting, and dress-making skills thanks to our Girls Advisor, Mrs Lewis. Anyone interested in making bows or skirts please see her ASAP. Days that these activities will run vary so please see the wall outside the Youth Room for more information.

Youth Frontiers The Youth Frontiers Showcase will be held at Belmont 16 Footers on Tuesday 25th October for those parents who are interested in viewing the community projects their students have created. This should be an exciting day for all involved. We wish the students involved the best of luck!

The Love Me Mission The last instalment of the Love Me Mission for the year will be presented to Year 8 and 11 girls this Friday. This presentation touches on topics including Self-Love & Self-Acceptance, Resilience & Emotional Intelligence, and Healthy Relationships. The final Love Me Mission affirmation is:
