Word ConfusionFigurative Or FigureFigurative art also called figurativism describes any art work regardless of medium (particularly paintings and sculptures) which is representational taken from real object sources In other words the artwork reflects strong references to the real world

Figurative art should not be confused with figure painting which represents the human figure although human and animal figures are common subjects of figure paintings Again figure paintings in any medium focuses on the human figure Some artists prefer to work with live models when painting or sculpting but it can take long hours of work for both the painter and the model Therefore it is not uncommon for artists to work with photos as a reference

Often artists choose to work in a particular medium or focus on certain subjects One artist might be highly skilled in a particular subject such as wood- carver Larry Szabelski who is known for his bird carvings Larry spends endless hours studying the anatomy of the bird species he sculpts in order to create a true likeness of the bird ldquofigurerdquo and it can take months from start to finish Other artists at Hunter-Wolff Gallery who are considered figure sculptors choosing to work in bronze are Fred Lunger and Tom Dickson Both are fine figure sculptors of wildlife or the human figure For some artists the figure is very challenging Colorado artist Julie Kirkland confessed painting figures was intimating before she visited South Africa and explored various cultures She said she had to paint the people who moved her Her desire to capture not only their physical beauty but also their very essence overshadowed any previous fear of tackling the human figure

Itrsquos true that the bigger named artists typically get the spotlight but this month we wanted to call your attention to a charming talented lady named Annette Williams who capitvated me the minute she greeted me with her German accent and gentle manner Even though her presence as a photographer is very small at HWG and may even be missed on a first visit we believe her talent is big You will find dozens and dozens of images only on note cards at Hunter-Wolff Gallery but Annette will happily commission larger formats for the serious collector

Born in an era when World War II ravaged may families and lives Annette Williams was one of the lucky ones to survive and grow to live her childhood dream As a very young child she was uprooted and expelled from her home like many refugees of German ancestry from various Eastern European countries and sent to northern Germany In spite of many hardships Annette says that it was this time in her life that set the stage for her passion in photography At an early age she learned to appreciate the beauty of nature on an idyllic farm in northern Germany where she lived until ten years of age

It would be many many years later after coming to the United States that Annette would have the opportunity to pursue her passion Today Annette lives on a ridge top at 9200 feet in Coloradorsquos wilderness opting for beauty and living without many city services In spite of overwhelming challenges throughout her life she created her own garden of serenity focusing on her photography and finding her artistic voice filled with tranquility She is now surrounded by the beauty she dreamed of for so long and captures that special moment in time on her film to share with others

We hope you appreciate these beautiful images which are pure gifts without any manipulation Ask about commissioning Annette Williamsrsquo photos
