This has nothing to do with dogs lying around in the heat or the “Dog Day” sales at baseball parks and certainly not the Dog Days used to describe the lethargic summer stock market. The dog days are astronomical and occur when Sirius, the Dog Star (which forms the nose of the constellation Canis Major - the greater dog) rises just before the sun in the morning. During this period, you can see the star for the first time in months. (Prior to this, the star rises too close to the sun and is blotted out). Sirius is the brightest star found just to the left of Orion’s Belt and Greek and Roman astrology connected this summer rising with heat, drought, lethargy fever, bad luck, war and disaster. Were the ancient Greeks and Romans correct in connecting the rise of Sirius with hot summer periods? Well here’s the twist. The original Dog Days noted by the ancient Greeks and Romans which began on July 3, have been affected by the slow wobble of the Earth’s axis, and the rising of Sirius is now later in the summer. Latitude also affects when the dog days oc- cur. Further to this, the stars in the night sky shift independently of our calendar seasons. This means that the dog days of ancient Greece aren’t the dog days of today. And in several millennia from now this astrological event will occur in the winter. Ah…. The Dog Days of Winter. We are just barely into summer and already the heat and humidity have driven us indoors into air conditioning or if lucky enough into the many Muskoka lakes and rivers. We have gotten off to a nasty start with heat waves, advisories for high humidity and the odd thunderstorm but in our area, very little rain. The “Dog Days of Summer” are here - that hot sultry period of summer traditionally running from July 3rd to August 11th according to the Farmer’s Almanac but actually originating with the writings of the ancient Romans and Greeks.

They assumed because of its brightness that it also supplied the earth with heat.

But in ancient Egypt, seeing Sirius was a signal that the Nile floods were about to begin. And this was a good thing, because the fields would be fertilized again and then the growing season would start. And in North America, it became time honoured that a dry growing season through the dog days was preferable to the trouble of a wet one.

Latitude also affects when the dog days oc-cur. Further to this, the stars in the night sky shift independently of our calendar seasons. Our July Guest Speakers

Staff and Members of Community Living Huntsville

Have you ever wondered what Community Living actually does? Join us on July 26th to hear

from the staff and the people they help.

Community Living Huntsville supports, serves and advocates for approximately 200 children

and adults who live with the label of intellectual disability in North Muskoka. This also includes

their families.

Their mandate includes: making empowerment accessible, embracing diversity, and

cultivating community.

Their work has led to their children attending regular daycare, camps and schools, and

joining activities such as Cubs and Brownies.

The adults they support work in real jobs, volunteer throughout our community, join clubs and

organizations and access services and recreational activities the same as everybody else.

Through this work, well over 100 local businesses and organizations are connecting with

people who are labeled as developmentally disabled, and who live, work and play within our

community.

Cathy Stroud, Executive Director, and Carla O’Neill , Passport Co-ordinator, will be bringing

some of their people to our meeting who will share their experiences including their work, their

volunteerism and their advocacy.

Their achievements are truly impressive!

Looking Ahead to our August General Meeting:

Barry ‘BAZZA’ Hayward has been a musician and performer for over forty–five years. His passion for hand-

drumming and percussion is both infectious and inspirational! Through his company, RHYTHMICITY

HUMAN DYNAMICS, he designs and delivers group drumming experiences and rhythm-based programs

and events for fun, creative expression, health and wellness, personal growth, and professional

development.

MEMBERSHIP

Our number of members remains at its limit of 175, and there are twenty-four names on

the Waiting List. Applications for membership will still be received and names placed on

our Waiting List. In the course of the year, it is likely that space for new members will

become available due to members’ changing circumstances such as a move away

from the area. When this happens, the ‘next in line’ on the Waiting list will be contacted.

For further details, click on the Membership tab at the top of the Home Page.

A reminder to all members to wear your name badge at Probus events, especially at the

monthly meetings. This makes greeting other members easy. New members have a

green dot on their badge and Management Team members have a coloured star so

they are easy to identify.

Moving? Changing your email address? Be sure to advise me of any changes to your

contact information by sending the changes directly to: [email protected]
