A forty year administrative veteran and a business and an organization leader has been chosen to lead the Huron City Schools on an inter- im basis until the Board of Education is able to filter through their find- ings and come up with a permanent solution. Mr. John Fernbaugh has joined the Huron team and is “committed to the profession of Excellence in Education and meeting the needs of the students and stake- holders”. “Huron City Schools is made up of excel- lent professionals. We will continue to focus on the ‘Educational Excellence’ mark and meeting the needs to the best of our abilities,” stated Deputy Superintendent Fernbaugh. Huron is an excellent District with outstand- ing programs. Our goal will be to focus on this and to expand on these programs to make them better, he continued. Deputy Superintendent Fernbaugh brings to Huron City Schools 34 years of adminis- trative experience. He has held Superinten- dent positions in both Elgin Local Schools in Marion, Ohio and McComb Local Schools in McComb, Ohio. Following retirement in 1998 after 33 years of service Fernbaugh took the position of Executive Director with the Ohio Association of School Business Officials for eight years. More recently Fernbaugh has been using his experiences and professionalism to assist Districts in need of a provisional leadership. He has held an Interim Superintendent posi- tion with the Rossford School District and a Middle School Principal position with Ma- son Consolidated Schools in Michigan and most recently another Interim Superinten- dent position in the Woodmore District for two years. Fernbaugh contributes his success in all of the Districts he has worked to the great teams of people that have been in place. “Absolute transparency” is a personal phi- losophy of the Deputy Superintendent’s. Fernbaugh views the District as the stake- holder’s property. Since arriving in Huron on August 1, 2012 his goal has been to be vis- ible and accessible at all times; he is very peo- ple oriented and approachable. Huron City Schools Hires Provisional Leadership BY LISA YAKO For Marilyn Forster, singing is more than just something to do in the shower. Saying that Marilyn is passionate about music is an understatement. She has 30 years of experi- ence in teaching, performance, and direct- ing. Marilyn’s professional experiences have ranged from teaching in public schools to giving private voice and piano lessons in her home to working with local community the- atres to her current position as artistic/musi- cal director at Perkins High School. Though Marilyn has a broad range of knowledge, her latest endeavor, Sing Out! Music Studio, will focus primarily on the choir experience. Marilyn believes that singing provides op- portunity and fosters a sense of accomplish- ment. Further, singing in a choir is a unique experience in which an individual is part of something that they cannot accomplish on their own. After many parents expressed interest in having their children sing beyond what was offered in the local public schools, Mari- lyn decided that the time was right to open her own business and offer singers, ages five through adult, the opportunity to train with a choir and perform. The goal of Sing Out!, which is located at 519 Cleveland Road, West in the Huron Plaza, is to teach students self- discipline, vocal skills, proper posture, prop- er breathing, and much more. In speaking of her opportunities to train young singers, Marilyn stated “I absolutely love taking the raw materials and molding them into some- thing beyond beautiful.” The studio will feature five age-group choirs. These are: “Melodies”- girls grades K-3; “Mez- zos”- girls grades 4-6; “Maestros”- boys grades K-6; “Motets”- mixed youth grades 7-8; and “Madrigals”- mixed teen grades 9-12 and col- lege. Each choir, which will contain no more than 25 students, will train together for 45 minutes per week for 14 weeks. Within that 14-week period, each choir will perform for the public at least three times. Students will perform music from all genres ranging from rock to classical to film and beyond. At least 25% of the music will be sung a cappella, thus “allowing students to recognize their voice as their instrument and learn to explore its beauty and possibilities.” explained Marilyn. Classes will begin on September 11, and space is still available in all of the choirs. For more information, visit www.singoutchoirs.com or call Marilyn at 419-656-8092. BY LISA YAKO At their regular meeting on August 14, the Huron City Council voted to hold a public hearing on August 28 in an effort to seek public opinion regarding proposed changes to the traffic patterns on Cleveland Road, East. The proposed changes include reduc- ing both the eastbound and westbound lanes from two lanes to one lane from Berlin Road to Main Street. A bike lane will then be add- ed in each direction, as well as a turning lane into the state boat launch. The city engineers have researched the traffic patterns along this stretch of Cleveland Road, East and have pre- sented their findings and recommendations to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Based on the volume of traffic on Cleveland Road, East, ODOT has concurred with the City that lane reductions are justi- fied. City Council invites the public to attend their next scheduled meeting on Tues- day, August 28 at 6:30 PM at which time they will hear comments on the changes outlined above. Should there be no opposition to the lane changes, the new traffic pattern will go into effect when the construction on the Cleveland Road Bridge is completed this fall. Public Hearing to be Held Regarding Lane Changes for Cleveland Road, East Huron’s Newest Business: Sing Out! Music Studio Council set the date/time for the Public Hearing relating to the new striping plan/ lane reduction of Route 6/Huron River Bridge to be held at the next Council meeting August 28th at 6:30pm. City Engineers will provide information and layout designs of these changes at this meeting. The public is encouraged to attend the Public Hearing to express any/all com- ments on the matter. DON BILLMAN The Huron Chamber of Commerce is planning its 16 th annual Don Billman Memorial Golf Outing on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Saw- mill Creek Golf Club. There will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start, lots of exciting golf challeng- es, a putting contest, all fol- lowed by an awesome dinner at Mulligan’s Pub. Participation by Huron residents is invaluable to the success of this event, which is one of the Chamber’s ma- jor fundraisers. These out- ings enable the Chamber to continue its work of helping area businesses grow and prosper, even in these tough economic times. The outing is dedicated to Billman, who founded the golf outing in the early 1980’s. He served as treasurer of the Chamber for two decades, until his death in 1996. The greens fee is $85 per golfer, which includes a cart, a picnic lunch, refreshments during play, the full-course dinner and lots of prizes. Anyone lucky enough to sink a hole-in-one on the sev- enth hole will win the title to a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, provided by Foster Chev- rolet-Cadillac in Sandusky. The dealer is also providing other top-of-the-line prizes for golfers lucky enough to sink the ball in one swing on holes 5, 13 and 17. Any area resident who en- joys a challenging game of golf at the award-winning Sawmill Creek course is in- vited to tee off with their friends and neighbors. With events such as this, the cham- ber has been able to: Provide scholarships to 2 HHS graduates each year Provide Chamber mem- bers with opportunities for discounts on health insur- ance, credit card processing and worker’s compensation premiums. Parks & Rec

With all the warm weather lately and recent storms a lot of homeowners are spending more time outside. They’re mowing lawns, pulling weeds, surveying damage, pick-ing up debris. However, if another necessary chore isn’t tackled too, all that hard work may be ruined. This is the chore that NOBODY wants to do. It’s filthy, frustrating, and extremely dangerous... it’s GUTTER CLEANING!!! There is a way to end gutter cleaning forever and it’s not by hiring some handyman to make a mess up there for you. It’s also not a screen from one of the big box stores or some cheap product from a roofing company. The solution is to call the professionals and that’s where the Gutter Cover Company can help you.

The Gutter Cover Co. has been specializing in gutter protection for the past 15 years. Their team will clean, tighten, re-seal, and properly align your gutters and then install the best gutter cover on the market, Gutter Top-per. Manufactured right here in Ohio, Gutter Topper is a solid aluminum cover that has earned numerous excellent reviews from the top consumer research companies in the country. Rigorous product testing showed that Gutter Topper can handle heavy downpours up to 22” of rain per hour, 110mph winds, and 300lbs/ft. without failing. When

installed a lifetime transferable warranty ensures that the gutters will be free-flowing forever. Not even spinners, pine needles, shingle grit, or seed pods can clog it.

Gutter Topper can be installed over the existing gutters if they’re in good condition. If they’re not, new gutters are also available.

The Gutter Cover Company also offers a safe and effective way to stop big icicles and ice damming. A product called Heater Cap can be installed with or without Gutter Topper which gently heats the gutter area with a self-regulated heat cable. An aluminum plate then covers the cable which protects it and helps spread the heat to a larger area. Heater Cap can also be installed on most existing gutter covers.

“This is a product that’s designed for people who are tired of dealing with gutters. Some of our customers have tried other products from screens and filters to one-piece sys-tems that require replacing all the gutters and downspouts. Some are better than others but they all have to be cleaned at some point. Gutter Topper is the permanent solution to free flowing gutters, hands down.”

Jim C. -- General Mgr at Gutter Cover Co.

Schedule a free estimate by Sept. 1, 2012, and receive a $300.00 discount on the purchase of either Gutter Topper or Heater Cap by mention-ing this offer. Additional discounts are available for Seniors and Veterans. Call 440-366-0688 or 1-800-335-4367 today. View short videos of Gutter Topper and Heater Cap at guttercover-company.com.

You may have heard that there will be new requirements for student’s school meals starting with the 2012-2013 year. Knowing what changes were likely to take place, the Huron City Schools Nutrition Department has already been gradually making many of these changes so it wouldn’t be a shock to our students.

BiggestNewChanges:• All lunches will now be required to have ½ cup of fruit OR vegetable on their tray for it to count as a full meal. Anything less than a full meal will be charged as an al carte item. We plan to offer a variety of fruits and vegetables daily to give the stu-dents more to select from.• There will be three different age groups; K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Before, we only had two age groups, which left some of the younger students with way too much food. Our menu might still look the same but the portion sizes and recipes will be designed to meet the specific age group.• There is now a limit as to how much meat/meat alternate (cheese, yogurt, etc.) and grains we can offer, Previously, we only had a minimum to meet, but could offer more. Now we have to stay within the specified ranges for each age group. This means main entrees may not be as large as they were in the past. Remember though, that there will be more fruits and vegeta-bles available than in the past. We’ll have to be a little creative to make this work, but have no doubt we can make each meal

something our customers will enjoy.

WhatWe’reAlreadyDoing:• Half of all grains offered must be whole grain rich. Our grains offered already meet this requirement.• Vegetables must be from the following groups each week: dark green and orange/red. Beans and/or legumes must also be of-fered once a week. There is an additional option to include starchy and other veg-etables as well. We have been following this requirement for over 2 years now by serving more fresh and steamed vegetables, serving romaine and spinach salad, sweet potato tots and beans at least once a week.• Schools have until 2014-2015 to meet the first level of lower sodium limits. While this might seem to be a challenge, we have come very close by using only fresh or fro-zen vegetables, since canned usually have more sodium. We expect manufacturers will reformulate many of their products to help us even more in meeting this require-ment. HowYouCanHelp:• Encourage your children to try new things at home and at school• Check out all the new additions to our lunch web site. Games, nutritional facts, resources, information and more! Visit www.huron-city.k12.oh.us• If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Sue Whitaker at 419-433-1234 ext. 5007.

A sure sign of the ap-proaching Fall is the sound of cracking shoulder pads during Tiger three-a-day practices. Last week, Hu-ron’s JV and Varsity teams welcomed Lake High School in to provide a tune up for the players, coaches, and even the officials. It was evident for both teams that there is still more work to be done before the season opener. This Friday, the Tigers have another scrim-mage scheduled against Bucyrus.
