"Barbaro is doing very well,@ Dr. Richard son said. AHe's actually better today than he was even [Monday], and he was pretty good yesterday. He's pretty agile. I was telling [owners] Roy and Gretchen [Jackson] that he's done a couple of things that manifest his level of comfort. One of which is he was actually scratching his left ear with his left hind leg, which is his good leg. When I was in working with him this morning, he kind of waved at me with his left hind leg. He's feeling very good and he's walking very well in the limb and has absolutely nor- mal vital signs today--his temperature, pulse, respira- tion, attitude, appetite." Correcting a statment from an early press conference, Richardson said that there are actually 27 screws--and not 23--in Barbaro's in- jured leg. Despite Barbaro's progress, Richardson reiterated that the Kentucky Derby winning colt has a long way to go before his recovery can be considered complete. "I've tried to emphasize before that bad things can happen at any time with horses who have had these kind of injuries," he said. "Good things take a long time to happen. It will be a few months before we know if we have this thing anywhere close to being healed. The single most important thing is that we are maintain his level of comfort on the fractured limb. If we can keep him comfortable on his right hind limb, that is the most important thing in a horse in terms of healing a catastrophic fracture. We obviously look at indications of infection, in terms of blood work, and any local heat pain or swelling." The Jacksons Meet the Press... The Jacksons also appeared at the press conference, making their first public statement since the Preakness. Roy Jackson began by thanking several individuals, including jockey Edgar Prado, trainer Michael Matz, the Pimlico outiders and the on-track veteri- narians who first reached the injured horse. Jackson said Barbaro was insured for mortal- ity and breeding purposes, but declined to reveal how much the policy was worth. "We've run through the gamut of emotions from the Kentucky Derby of eu- phoria to the devastation of the Preakness in our family," he said. "I think we've gone through our own personal feelings. I think the sad part is in Barbaro's case that the American public won't get a chance to see him continue his racing career." It was also announced at the press conference that the Barbaro Fund has been launched. The proceeds from that fund will benefit the New Bolton Center. Prado Speaks Out... Speaking publicly for the first time since last Satur-day=s Preakness, jockey Edgar Prado appeared on theMSNBC television program ALive and Direct@ Mondayevening. AI=m very devastated by this whole situation,@the soft-spoken Panamanian said. AAll weekend I waspraying for Barbaro and hope that he=ll make a speedyrecovery.@ Prado indicated that he was Aexcited@ to beaboard Barbaro and had every indication in the pre-racewarm up that the colt was going to perform well. AHewas feeling so great in the post paradeBhe was ready torun his race,@ he explained. AAs soon as he heard a littlenoise before the start, he broke through the gate. Be-cause he was feeling so good, he was ready to do hisbusiness.@ He added that he, like many other equineprofessionals, sees no correlation between the gateincident and the subsequent injury. AHe was feeling sogood in the post parade, he was jumping out of his skinand I was very comfortable with that,@ Prado explained.AHe was ready to lunge the gate. When the last horsewent into the gate, he heard a noise and thought it wastime to go. I thought it was nothing major. I took mytime and checked everything and saw that he was fine.I don=t think this contributed to this horse=s injury in thisparticular case.@ As for the injury itself, he stated, AItwas like a bad dream. Unfortunately, that=s part ofracing and a bad part of racing. When the gates opened[for the start of the race], I guess he took a bad step. Iheard something and I didn=t take any chances. I pulledhim up and tried to make sure he was OK.@ Prado=sthoughts turned immediately to the horse. ADefinitely Iwas thinking about the horse more than anything else.He wasn=t really at full speed at the time. I tried to pullhim up pretty straight and tried to relieve the pressureof my body on top of him. I jumped off the horse rightaway and tried to comfort him, but I think the damagewas already done. Barbaro is a very athletic horse, avery smart horse. He realized that something waswrong and he didn=t put up any resistance or any fight. He was in shock and so was I.@ Prado said that he isscheduled to travel to Chester County AThursday orFriday@ to pay a visit to the Kentucky Derby winner.

HURRICANE RIVALS ON THE RUN Michael Ta-bor=s Hurricane Run (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) was yesterdaysupplemented to Sunday=s G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup atThe Curragh, where he looks likely to meet a diminishedfield. Last year=s G1 Irish Derby and G1 Prix de l=Arc deTriomphe scorer will face a maximum of five rivals inthe 1 5/16-mile contest, with Roldvale Ltd=s DavidJunior (Pleasant Tap) only a possible at this stage.Trainer Brian Meehan has yet to commit the G1 DubaiSheema Classic hero and ground conditions will deter-mine his participation. AThe best they=re hoping for isyielding and that would put us off,@ he said yesterday.AHe=s a good, fast-ground horse, so we=ll play it prettycool with him, but this is one of the best opportunitiesto take on Hurricane Run.@ Jockey Jamie Spencer isbooked to maintain his partnership with the four-year-old David Junior and he is also hoping for a dryingweek. AIt will be interesting to see what Brian doesbetween now and the weekend, but he wouldn=t wantextremes of ground,@ he added. AVery soft groundwould blunt his speed.@ Trainer Jim Bolger has left inthe multiple Group 1 winner Alexander Goldrun (Ire)(Gold Away {Ire}), but has stated a preference for Satur-day=s G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. at the track, while AidanO=Brien might not be represented in the race, despiteleaving in last year=s GI Breeders= Cup Turf runner-upAce (Ire) (Danehill).

While the enduring memory of the 2006 Preakness S.will be of the cruel injury which struck Barbaro, theremarkable winning effort of Bernardini should not beoverlooked. On only his fourth lifetime start, Bernardiniproduced a dominant display to score by 53 lengthsfrom Kentucky Derby favorite Sweetnorthernsaint whilerecording a Beyer Speed figure which was higher thanthat achieved by Barbaro in the Derby. Bernardini=s victory corrected something of an anom-aly in the stud career of his sire, A.P. Indy. The leadingsire of classic-distance U.S. dirt runners over the lastdecade or so, A.P. Indy had never previously beenrepresented by a winner of one of the Triple Crownevents, his nearest efforts being seconds by Aptitude inthe Kentucky Derby and Belmont S., and seconds by AP Valentine in the Preakness and Belmont S. A.P. Indydaughters have had a little more success in the classics, with Secret Status capturing the GI Kentucky Oaks andGI Mother Goose S., and Jilbab the GI CCA Oaks. Ofcourse, the narrow focus of Triple Crown races aside,A.P. Indy=s record is quite exceptional, a fact which isreflected in his $300,000 stud fee.

To date he has 88 stakes winners from his first 10crops, including Horse of the Year Mineshaft and cham-pion two-year-old filly Tempera, and in addition toBernardini and the two fillies mentioned above, hisGrade I winners also include the aforementioned Apti-tude and A P Valentine, Golden Missile, Symboli Indy,Tomisue=s Delight, Stephen Got Even, Friends Lake,Passing Shot, Sweet Symphony, Runup the Colors, A.P. Adventure and Royal Indy. This year he is repre-sented by graded stakes winners, A. P. Warrior andTeammate, both three, and Master Commander, whotook the GIII William Donald Schaefer H. on thePreakness S. undercard. One factor which comes to mind with regard to A.P.Indy and the classics is that, even though he was him-self a juvenile Grade I winner, several of his best off-spring have reached their peak either later in theirthree-year-old career or as older horses. In the case ofBernardini, however, a dose of early maturity is sup-plied by his dam, Cara Rafaela. A member of the first crop of Quiet American, Cara Rafaela was a juvenilestandout, winning the GII Alcibiades S. and GI Holly-wood Starlet S., and taking second in the GI Matron S.and GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Pedigree Perspectives cont.

Cara Rafaela failed to captured a black-type event atthree, but continued to display excellent form, captur-ing seconds in the GI Ashland S., GI Santa Anita Oaks,GI Las Virgenes S. and GII Black-Eyed Susan S. (overthe track where her son would earn classic glory 10years later), and thirds in the GI Kentucky Oaks and GIMothern Goose S. Sidelined after that race, CaraRafaela was much less effective when she returned atfour, although she did add a win the restricted Pico PicoS. at Fairplex Park. She had produced four foals prior toBernardini, the best of which was her first offspring, the GI Santa Anita Oaks third Ile de France (Storm Cat). Cara Rafaela was half-sister to another very talentedperformer in Abaginone. A son of Devil=s Bag,Abaginone combined brilliant speed with glass-like legs.Indeed, such was his fragility that he faced the starter just 10 times in three years of racing. He won seven ofthose 10 starts, and put up some memorable displays, including in the GIII Los Angeles H., where he setbreathtaking fractions, only to be caught late by thatyear=s GI Breeders= Cup Sprint runner-up Paying Dues, who forced a dead-heat; and the GIII Portero Grande H.,where recorded a 116 Beyer as he crossed the line sixlengths clear of the runner-up, Grade I winner DramaticGold, with that year=s champion sprinter Lit de Justiceoff the board. Abaginone retired to stand at stud inex-pensively in New York and after a slow start had a bigyear in 2005 when he was represented by Grade Iwinner Acey Deucey and graded-stakes winner UncleCammie. However, this run came too late to rescueAbaginone=s U.S. career, as he was sold to Mexico in2003. Oil Fable, the dam of Cara Rafaela and Abaginone, was only a minor winner, but owned an excellent pedi-gree, as she was by Spectacular Bid out of NorthernDancer=s graded-stakes winning daughter NorthernFable. The next dam, Fairway Fable, a stakes-winningdaughter of Never Bend, is granddam of English Groupwinner Majmu, and third dam of Muhtathir, a Group 1winning miler in France, and Hook and Ladder, a dualgraded-stakes winning sprinter by Dixieland Band, whois now at stud in New York. It=s an oft-stated fact that A.P. Indy=s sire SeattleSlew and Mr. Prospector came from the same immedi-ate female line (Seattle Slew=s granddam being inbredto that family), and that the pair have frequently worked well together. This is particularly so for A.P.Indy, who has sired at least 28 stakes winners on thecross, including Bernardini, and other Grade I winnersSweet Symphony, A. P. Adventure, Jilbab, Tomisue=sDelight and Mineshaft. What is interesting here, how-ever, is that other than Capote, until the arrival of A.P.Indy, Seattle Slew and his sons had not flourished with mares descending from Mr. Prospector throughFappiano.

Other than those by Capote, or by an A.P. Indy linehorse, there is only graded-stakes winner by a SeattleSlew line stallion out of Fappiano line mare). A.P. Indy, however has recently been flourishing with theFappiano line. He has Grade I winner A. P. Adventureand Japanese stakes winner Aratama Indy out of Fappiano mares; and in his current three-year-old crop,Bernardini and GII San Felipe S. victor A. P. Warrior outof mares by Quiet American, and the GII Bonnie Miss S.victress, Teammate out of a mare by another Fappianoson, Rubiano. Quiet American might particularly be playing into theLa Troienne background in A.P. Indy=s pedigree. SeattleSlew=s dam has the sisters Striking and Busher 3x3,and A.P. Indy=s second dam is by Buckpasser, who isout of Busanda, a three-parts sister to Striking andBusher (all three being by War Admiral out of daughtersof La Troienne). Quiet American is inbred 3x2 to Dr. Fager, whose broodmare sire, Better Self, is by LaTroienne=s son, Bimelech, out of a War Admiral mare.Alan Porter may be contacted [email protected]. FROM THE DESK OF...

Bill Oppenheim

DARLEY DAY Tom Albertrani, former Bill Mott and Saeed Bin Suroorassistant, was having a big day even before thePreakness: Songster, a three-year-old colt from the first

crop by Songandaprayer whocost $200,000 at the 2004Fasig July yearling sale, hadalready won the six-furlongGIII Hirsch Jacobs S. forthree-year-old sprinters by 10lengths, running a Beyerspeed figure of 107. Interest-ingly, like Bernardini, Song-ster debuted at GulfstreamPark in January and, likeBernardini, was also making

his fourth lifetime start. Could be a trend here, an anglefor trainer Albertrani, who was scoring at a 22-percentclip for the year before Saturday--bet anything he sendsout that is making its fourth start, having made its firststart at Gulfstream in January. We'll never know whether Bernardini, who ran asparkling Beyer 113 when easily disposing of surpriseGI Kentucky Derby favorite Sweetnorthernsaint, wouldhave derailed Barbaro's Triple Crown bid had the Derbyhero not broken down. In reality, the larger tragedyrenders it a somewhat meaningless question. Fair enough: Edgar Prado probably deserves theEclipse Award this year for managing to pull Barbaro upin time to at least give him a chance to survive, and thefact that the focus this week has been more on Barbarothan Bernardini is actually great news for racing, be-cause it shows how many people actually do careabout the horses, that they are not just numbers, notjust 'the six horse.' The Blood-Horse reported that theiron-line site's record number for 'hits' was shatteredSaturday night, and then again Sunday morning.

His breakdown was one of those horrible moments inAmerican racing when a champion goes down: AndyBeyer likened it to Ruffian in the 1975 match race withFoolish Pleasure; I thought immediately of Go forWand's awful breakdown in the 1990 Breeders' Cup.No matter where you watched the race, there waspalpable distress in the air on Saturday, and Bernardini'swin was almost a footnote. Connections weren't ex-actly hopping around high-fiving each other on thewinner's stand; in fact, I thought John Ferguson did agreat job in conveying the enthusiasm of the winner'scamp as well as the anguish and concern of everybodywho loves horse racing during the presentation. Racingwas delivered another pulverizing body blow Saturday,so the concern for Barbaro at least provides us hard-ened professionals some welcome reassurance that theoutside world actually does care a little bit. Whatever might or might not have happened hadBarbaro stood up, Bernardini was always travelling likea winner Saturday, and he did register a Beyer numberof 113, two points higher than Barbaro's Derby-winning'fig.' You want to say 'it would take an act of God' forBernardini not to win the Belmont, considering his sire,A.P. Indy, won it on the way to becoming one of thetop sires for North American racing, but after last week-end you wouldn't care to tempt fate like that. Let's justhope Bernardini gets the days in the sun the Preaknesssuggests he should, and that Barbaro survives. Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation may be inthe doldrums over here in EuropeB-just about everybodyis, considering the weather, except for Sir MichaelStoute. (Stoute has won with 36 percent of his startersthis season, 43 percent this month, including four Oakspreps in the last two weeks.) But Tom Albertrani'sPimlico double was supplemented by a third Darleystakes win Saturday. This was registered by ChangingWeather, a Storm Boot colt who had cost $260,000 atOBS last March, and won Churchill Downs' six-furlongMatt Winn S. for trainer Eoin Harty. Considering theyscored three stakes wins, including their first AmericanClassic, the Darley team at least has reason to becheerful about how their American operation is doing.

Pedigree Notes... He's a bit of a forgotten man these days, but oldCadeaux Genereux, maybe better known now as thesire of Bahamian Bounty, got a timely boost last week-end, with three individual two-year-old winners in Brit-ain last Friday and Saturday...Here are a couple ofinteresting inbred horses: first, High Cotton, winner ofthe $100,000 Sir Barton S. on the Preaknessundercard. He is by Dixie Union, who is by DixielandBand out of a Capote mare, and he's himself out of anA.P. Indy mare--so inbred 4x3 to Seattle Slew. Thenthere's Magic American, very impressive winner of afive-furlong contest for unraced two-year-old fillies atLongchamp last Friday in :57.6 seconds. This rocket isinbred 3x3 to Storm Bird, being by Storm Cat's sonHigh Yield out of a mare by Bluebird, son of Storm Bird.Bred by the Castleton Group and trained by CriquetteHead for T.A. Ryan, you can chalk up a stakes win forthis filly in her next start. Second to her was Beta, ahalf-sister to Bago by Selkirk, who is about as hot a sirethis year as Michael Stoute is a trainer. That's prettyhot.

LADY HEADS 1000 CAST Cheveley Park Stud=s Confidential Lady (GB) (Sing-spiel {Ire}) yesterday headed the 22 remaining fillies forSunday=s G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh. Con-nections have yet to confirm the G1 1000 Guineasrunner-up for the Irish equivalent, with the ground beinga determining factor. AShe went nicely in a spin thismorning,@ Cheveley Park Stud=s Managing Director ChrisRichardson told PA Sport yesterday. AWe haven't madea decision yet whether she goes to Ireland on Sunday,or wait until later the week and go to Epsom. Theground will be a consideration and it will depend onhow the filly is and how [trainer] Sir Mark [Prescott]feels the filly has come on since the Guineas. She mayneed the extra four or five days, in which case we willwait and the owners will see the list of entries for Ire-land and we will start to make a plan.@ Malih L. alBasti=s Nasheej (Swain {Ire}), who was third atNewmarket May 7, also featured among the entry, while Aidan O'Brien has left in five fillies, includingSusan Magnier=s G3 Leopardstown 1000 Guineas TrialS. winner Queen Cleopatra (Ire) (Kingmambo) and 1000Guineas also-ran Race for the Stars (Fusaichi Pega-sus).Other notables include Khalid Abdullah=s impressiveListed Michael Seely Memorial S. winner Short Dance(Hennessy) and Jaber Abdullah=s G2 Lowther S. heroineFlashy Wings (GB) (Zafonic), who was also down thefield in the Newmarket version. Her trainer, MickChannon, was another who expressed concern over thestate of the ground at The Curragh yesterday. AI wantto run her, but I don't think the ground is going to beany good,@ he told PA Sport. AThey tell me it was barelyraceable at the Curragh yesterday. At this stage I wouldhave thought that it is very unlikely that she will run.But saying that, we are in there, we're prepared andwe're ready to go, but she won't run if the ground issoft.@ As expected, the name of the 1000 Guineaswinner Speciosa (Ire) did not appear in the declarations.
