LOCATION Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states. It hit the eastern seaboard from Florida to Maine. Particularly severe damage in New Jersey and

New York. Hurricane Sandy made landfalls in Jamaica,

Cuba, and the Bahamas and had significant effects in Haiti.

DAMAGE Reported estimated damage caused by Sandy was

$50 billion. More than 650,000 U.S. homes were damaged or

destroyed by the storm. 8,100,000 homes lost power. The dollar value of the lost business activity was

25,000,000,000. While passing over Jamaica, it dumped up to 28

WEATHER CONDITIONS Began as a tropical wave in the Caribbean on October 19. It became a tropical depression in just six hours. It upgraded to a hurricane on Oct. 24 when its maximum

sustained winds reached 74 mph. A full moon made high tides 20 percent higher than

normal Category 3 Hurricane. 89 mph winds were recorded when Hurricane Sandy

moved through New Jersey.

RED CROSS They spent an estimated $110 million by the end of

December on Super storm Sandy emergency relief. As of December 17, the American Red Cross has

received $202 million in donations and pledges for its Sandy response.

They are serving more than 9 million meals and snacks. Handing out more than 6.7 million relief items such as

cold weather items and clean-up supplies. Providing more than 103,000 health services and

emotional support contacts for people living in very tough conditions.

Supported more than 81,000 shelter stays, more than half of the total number of Sandy shelters.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSE The President of the United States came to New Jersey

on Wednesday October 31. President Obama was with Gov. Chris Christie on the

ground in Jersey and then in the air. The evening of Nov. 1, president Obama approved a 100

percent cost share in for ten days, starting October 31, for emergency work for power and transportation systems in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut counties.

other forms of Category B (emergency work) public assistance would remain at a 75 percent cost share.
