UM Sets GSR School Record

The University of Miami recorded a department-wide school-record Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 93 percent, according to the rates released Thursday by the NCAA. As a department, Miami’s 93 percent GSR ranks fourth among ACC schools and is eighth overall among FBS schools. Overall, the University of Miami athletic department has improved from 77 to 93 percent from 2005 to 2012, a year after UM student-athletes posted a then-record 89 percent GSR in 2011. UM has exceeded the NCAA average GSR in each of the last eight years. “Congratulations to our Hurricane Family,” Associate AD for Academic Services David Wyman said. “I am so proud of the performance and development of our student-athletes as they have be-come national leaders in collegiate academic success with these remarkable results. “Their excellence is due to the tremendous support they receive from our President, Provost, the administration, our outstanding faculty, academic services and coaching staff,” Wyman said. Six UM teams compiled GSR marks of 100 percent; men’s diving and golf posted its eighth con-secutive perfect GSR mark, while women’s tennis recorded its fifth straight GSR score of 100 per-cent. Also adding perfect GSR scorers were women’s rowing, women’s swimming and volleyball. Volleyball posted a perfect score for the second consecutive year, while both rowing and women’s swimming set program-record highs for GSR. “To set a school-best GSR in each of the last two years is a major accomplishment for our program,” Interim Director of Athletics Blake James said. Football jumped six points from 88 to 94 in 2012, tying for the highest GSR score among ACC schools and third-highest GSR score among FBS schools and improving by 27 points (67 to 94) from 2010. Baseball had the largest jump of any UM program, improving by 20 points (60 to 80). “It shows the dedication of our student-athletes academically and the commitment to academic excellence from our coaches and our academic support staff,” James said. “To be among the nation’s best in GSR is a crowning achievement and we look forward to maintaining our position as one of the truly special academic and athletic intercollegiate programs.” The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. Both rates improve on the federally mandated graduation rate by including students who were omitted from the federal calculation. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academi-cally eligible to compete had they remained. The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2002-2003 through 2005-06. More than 110,000 student-athletes are included in the most recent four classes using the GSR methodology, as compared to about 79,500 in the federal rate. The NCAA began compiling these figures with the entering freshmen class of 1995.

Sebastian the Ibis, the University of Miami’s famous mascot, is one of 16 spirited heroes vying to become the 2012 Capital One Mascot of the Year, announced Monday by Capital One. Sebastian is one of three ACC mascots in the competition, joining Testudo (Maryland) and Ms. Wuf (NC State).

Fans will be able to vote for their favorite mascots via Twitter. Regular season vote officially opens at 12 p.m. EDT on Mon., Sept. 3, and continues weekly through Mon., Nov. 26. The top eight mascots with the best head-to-head records will then compete in a bracket-style, single-elimination competition to determine the overall winner. Fans can vote at www.CapitalOneBowl.com, on Facebook and on Twitter. All voting information appears at www.CapitalOneBowl.com.

For the first time in its 11-year history, the competition will include two female mascots – Ms. Wuf and Wilma T. Wildcat from Arizona. The duo will be joined by four oth-er competition newbies – Colorado State’s Cam the Ram, Missouri’s Truman the Tiger, Rutgers’ Scarlet Knight and Texas Tech’s Red Raider.

The rest of the 16-member 2012 Capital One All-Amer-ica Mascot Team includes Cosmo (BYU), Sparty (Michi-

gan State), Mike the Tiger (LSU), Wolfie Jr. (Nevada), YoUDee (Delaware), Bucky Badger (Wisconsin), The Duck (Oregon) and Cocky (South Carolina).

In addition to the 2012 team, Western Kentucky’s Big Red became the first inductee into the Capital One Mas-cot Challenge Hall of Fame. Big Red competed eight times in the Capital One Mascot Challenge.

This year, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look inside the Capital One Mascot Training Camp. The quirky video vignettes will be released at www.CapitalOneBowl.com and www.Facebook.com/MascotChallenge.

The Capital One National Mascot of the Year will be announced Jan. 1, 2013, at the Capital One Bowl and will be awarded a $20,000 scholarship to help fund its school’s mascot program. Each of the 2012 Capital One All-America team members will also receive $5,000 for their university mascot program.

UM Partners with Tagboard

As part of an ongoing effort to better connect Hurricanes fans nationwide, the University of Miami Department of Athletics has partnered with Tagboard to integrate social media sites into one dynamic display. The innovative company will help Miami feature passionate Canes fans who use the #IStandWithTheU hashtag in their Twitter, Facebook or Instagram posts.

Tagboard strives to “give people a better experience for discovery and interaction of social content.” This mission will serve all fans of @HurricaneSports, including both social media power users as well as newcomers to online communities.

UM is one of only three NCAA athletic departments to offer Tagboard’s platform. The technology will be imple-mented immediately into HurricaneSports.com and will be used in future game promotions, features and contests held by the department of athletics.

If Al Golden was hoping to convey his excitement to the 2012 Hurricanes just prior to the opening of the season, he certainly picked the right man to deliver his message. “Let me tell you something, guys,” he said, pacing around the meeting room. “This is going to be the greatest time of your lives! I used to sit in this same room years ago, and say ‘We’re playing this big game! This is why you came to Miami! That’s why you wanted to be a Hurricane!’” The passion so deeply fermented in that charming voice, the same Southern twang that induces smiles from millions of football fans every Sunday afternoon in the fall, sounded just as real in an August team meeting as it did back in 1984. Indeed, if any of the hundreds of players and coaches that have suited up in Orange and Green can attest to the Hurricane tradition, it’s 69-year-old James William “Jimmy” Johnson from Port Arthur, Texas. Fans and media members alike were skeptical of the initial hire, when Johnson was brought on to replace a coaching legend in Howard Schnellenberger after the 1983 season. But six years later, teary-eyed fans sat back and watched as one of the all-time coaching greats moved from the collegiate to the professional ranks. After leading the Hurricanes all the way to the national championship game as head coach in 1986, Johnson guided Miami to its first undefeated season in the modern era and its second national championship trophy in 1987. He would fin-ish his time at Miami with an outrageous 52-9 mark (.852 winning percentage), including 44-4 (.916) in his final four seasons. His success wouldn’t end there. Six years after capturing a trophy as head coach of the Hurricanes, Johnson guided the Dallas Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl trophies. With the championships came the sealing of a legend - Johnson had accomplished the un-thinkable: national championships as both a collegiate player and coach, and two Super Bowl trophies as leader of the most iconic franchise in professional sports. Twenty-five years later, back in the same meeting rooms where he would gath-er his Hurricanes teams as a wide-eyed, upstart head coach, Johnson can’t help but reminisce. “Enjoy this thing. I’m an old man, but you don’t know what I would give to be sitting in your seat. This is the greatest time of your life. Enjoy the journey.”

Baseball’s incoming recruiting class is ranked No. 9 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 10 by Baseball America. It was the first time the Hurricanes had a group

ranked in the top 10 by Baseball America since 2006, as Miami was recognized with the second-highest rated recruiting class in the ACC (North Carolina, No. 5). 9/10

Women’s basketball is ranked 24th in the Associated Press and 23rd in the USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 preseason polls.

Head coach Jim Larranaga is in his 29th season as a head coach and second at Miami. He has a 490-347 overall record and was 20-13 in his first season with the Canes.

Volleyball currently owns a 16-game home winning streak that dates back to the 2011 season. The Canes are 11-0 at home this season.

Soccer set a program single-season record with 11 shutouts, including a pro-gram ACC-record six shutouts. The 2012 team is on pace to break the school’s

single-season record for fewest goals allowed and goals against average.

Publix $9 before 9 a.m. Tickets

The Miami Hurricanes have announced a special ticket deal – the “Publix Nine before 9” for the team’s 2012 home football schedule at Sun Life Stadium.

The “Publix Nine before 9” deal begins on the Monday before each home football game, and will allow fans the opportunity to purchase tickets to that week’s game for only $9 each. To receive the special price, tickets must be purchased in person at the BankUnited Center between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The special kicks off this Monday, Sept. 10, with $9 tickets available for Saturday’s game vs. Bethune-Cook-man. Seats at the special price will be available through Friday, and must be purchased between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the BankUnited Center. How did you become a Hurricanes fan?“I became a Hurricane fan when I was about seven or eight years old. My family had sea-son tickets to Tech games and I went to a ton of them growing up. I remember seeing the Canes play for the first time and falling in love with everything about them: their colors, cock-iness, and the fact everyone hated them. It was all very appealing to me, heck even Sebastian had an edge to him. Now 20 years later, I still bleed orange and green!

Do you find it difficult supporting Miami all the way from Salem?“The most difficult thing is seeing the GREAT deals on tickets and being so far away I can’t take advantage of them. Other than that, I’ve gotten used to the bravado of the Tech fans, they are very proud of their ACC champion-ships, but still have ZERO of what The U has FIVE of!”

Is there a place you visit to watch Hurricanes games in the city?“I usually just watch the games from my house.”

Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Salem?“Yes, there is actually a decent-sized fan base here in the Roanoke Valley.”

How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? Travel for games?“I go to the games every year within driving distance. I will be at the Virginia and Duke games this year supporting The U.”

Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes fan? “My favorite Canes memories are getting Ed Reed’s arm sleeve at the 2001 Tech game, and of course the 2002 Rose Bowl! I hope to watch the Canes win number six real soon!”

THUNDER + LIGHTNINGSenior RB Mike James and freshman RB Duke Johnson have combined for 1,032 of Miami’s 1,171 rushing yards on 204 carries. The lightning-quick Johnson, who has already collected two ACC Rookie of the Week honors this season, has amassed 555 yards and 6 rushing TDs on 94 carries, while the bruising James has 477 yards and 5 touchdowns on 110 carries.

A HEALTHY GREENAfter his first three injury-plagued seasons in Coral Gables, redshirt junior DE Shayon Green is finally healthy and making huge contributions along the defensive line.

In 9 starts at defense end, Green leads all Hurricanes defenders with 57 total tackles, including 33 solo stops.

Prior to this season, the Tifton, Ga., native and 2011 Training Room Comeback Player of the Year had seven total tackles in six career games.

DID U KNOW?A ‘U’ of firsts: In September 1955, the first college football game to be televised in color was Miami vs. Georgia Tech, a 14-6 Hurricanes loss. In November 1968, the first college football game to be televised on primetime television was Miami at Alabama, also a 14-6 UM loss.

Thursday night football. An ESPN national TV audience...and all orange uniforms? You betcha. For the first time in a very long time, the Miami Hurricanes wore their home orange jerseys with orange pants. And it was a good look as the Hurricanes dominated Virginia Tech 30-12 and moved into sole possession of first place atop the ACC Coastal Division standings.

While the uniforms looked good on television, it was freshman RB Duke Johnson and Miami’s defense and special teams that made big play after big play. Johnson rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown en route to 217 all-purpose yards (including an 81-yard kickoff return). Miami’s defense forced three Virginia Tech turnovers, including a critical fumble inside the Hurricanes’ 5-yard line.

One of the biggest plays of the game came in the first quarter. Freshman LB Gabe Terry blocked a Virginia Tech punt that led to the Hurricanes’ first score of the night. On the Virginia Tech 41-yard line, Terry blocked the Hokies’ punt attempt and it was recovered by Rayshawn Jenkins at the VT 16-yard line. Two plays later, Miami scored. It was Miami’s first blocked punt since 2008 against UCF and its first in ACC play since 2004 also against Virginia Tech.

Drive after drive when the Hurricanes needed it the most, their defense made big stops. Despite allowing more than 400 yards of total offense, the Canes’ defense held Virginia Tech to just 12 points – their second-lowest point total allowed this season and lowest in ACC play.

With three games left to play, the Miami Hurricanes are one win away from becoming bowl eligible and own a full one-game lead in the ACC Coastal Division. A win in Charlottesville would be the Hurricanes’ fifth in ACC play – the second-most conference wins since joining the ACC in 2004.

This weekend’s game in Charlottesville will serve as a homecoming of sorts for head coach Al Golden. Miami’s second-year coach spent five seasons as the Virginia defensive coordinator. Prior to that, Golden was a graduate assistant from 1994-96 before graduating with his master’s degree in sports psychology in 1996.

Miami will be looking to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season.

A Hurricane has won ACC Player of the Week five times this season, most in the league. Four different players have been honored.

Miami volleyball is in the home stretch of its schedule with five regular season matches remaining. The team has won 11 of its last 12 and is tied for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with Florida State. FSU and UM will meet on Nov. 23 in Tallahassee, Fla.

Most recently, the Canes bounced back after a defeat at North Carolina to take down NC State on the road. Three players picked up double-digit kills in the match. UM swept the season home-and-home with the Wolfpack and now leads the all-time series, 16-1.

“We were hungry to get out on the court against NC State,” head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “We came out strong in the first set and responded after they made a rally to win a hard-fought match. That’s what it takes to win on the road.”

Previously, the Canes swept through both Virginia Tech and Virginia at home to extend their home winning streak to 16 matches. The

win over the Hokies avenged an earlier loss, as UM is the only team in the ACC to defeat all 11 opponents.

Junior Taylor Hollins (above) won ACC Player of the Week following that weekend, hitting at a .548 clip with 25 kills. She became the fourth different Cane to win the league honor, most in the conference.

Nationally, Miami has appeared in the AVCA Coaches Poll the last three weeks and sits No. 16 in the NCAA RPI. The Canes are one of three ACC teams in the top 25 in the RPI.

The Hurricanes will return to the state of North Carolina next weekend to take on Wake Forest and Duke, having defeated both in Coral Gables earlier in the season. The following weekend will be the final homestand against Boston College and Maryland, with a ceremony for senior setter Nrithya Sundararaman scheduled on Nov. 18

DID U KNOW?The Miami Hurricanes took down the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time in program history with a 1-0 win over in-state rival Florida State on the last day of the regular season. Sophomore Ashley Flinn, who pushed Miami into the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament with a double-overtime goal against Alabama, clinched the Canes’ berth in the ACC Championship with her dramatic 89th-minute goal.

After earning their first trip to the ACC Championship since 2008, the Miami Hurricanes await their postseason fate Monday, when the field of 64 will be announced live on NCAA.com at 4:30 p.m. The Hurricanes, sporting a 9-7-3 overall record and 4-4-2 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play, are looking to qualify for their second straight postseason.

Miami finished its year in seventh place in the competitive ACC, earning its first conference tournament berth since 2008 on the last day of the regular season. The team enjoyed a number of signature wins along the way, including a defeat of the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time in program history (Florida State), a victory over SEC champions Florida, and an overtime win over ACC runners-up and No. 7 Maryland.

The Hurricanes’ strong surge at the end of the regular season propelled them into the eight-team conference tournament. Facing the most difficult portion of its 2012 schedule, Miami reeled off eight of a possible 12 points to finish the season hot. The Hurricanes held four Top 25 opponents, all of whom ranked in the top seven in the conference in offense, scoreless

across 408 combined minutes to clinch its berth on the last day of the regular season. Miami’s fiery finish included a 3-1-2 record in its final six regular season games, a stretch that included five shutouts.

Last season, all eight ACC Championship teams qualified for the postseason, while Miami was selected as the ninth representative from the conference. Miami won its first-ever postseason game in its 2011 tournament run, besting Alabama at Cobb Stadium before dropping its second-round match on the road to Long Beach State.

Rookie sensation Jasmine Paterson was recognized with well-deserved ACC All-Freshman honors before the semifinal rounds of the ACC Championship. The Key Largo, Fla. native, one of the many bright spots in a year riddled by injuries to key veterans, did not seem out of place in starting 15 of the season’s 19 matches.

THE BAND OF THE HOURThe University of Miami “Band of the Hour” is well-known for its pre-game and halftime performances at Hurricane football games. The “Band of the Hour” received its name in 1948 as it was playing Fillmore’s march, the “Man of the Hour” during a halftime perfor-mance in the Orange Bowl. The announcer spoke over the stadium public address, “The Man of the Hour played by the Band of the Hour!” The name caught on among students and the local press, and the band adopted it as its official title.

The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation whose sole purpose is to recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have excelled at their sports and brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments and championships.
