placing a greater focus on the Fiji market with the appointment of Leon Thomson to the newly created role of exec assistant manager - sales amp marketing Fiji Complex for the grouprsquos biggest properties in the South Pacific

Thomson is relocating from the Sheraton Grand Mirage on the Gold Coast to take on the position

has moved to cut red tape and speed the redevelopment of Hayman and Daydream islands in the wake of Cyclone Debbie

The statersquos Tourism Minister Kate Jones announced yesterday the government had given special status to the islandsrsquo redevelopment projects worth $165 million combined

ldquoThis means the Coordinator-General will have the power to cut red tape quickly progress development approvals and get these projects happening as soon as possiblerdquo Jones said

ldquoThese projects will create hundreds of local jobs and support tourism recovery in the Whitsundaysrdquo she said

ldquoOur priority is to revive the region by fast-tracking jobs and

business opportunities in the Whitsundaysrdquo

TSA to extend 911 security fee

THE Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is seeking to extend the collection of the ldquoSeptember 11 Security Feerdquo

The fee helps air carriers cover the costs of providing Federal services including civil aviation security services

Information collected requires them to submit to TSA the amount of fees an air carrier has imposed collected refunded to passengers and remitted to TSA

TSA wants carriers to continue submitting the reports quarterly and for airlines to be required to retain the information for three fiscal years after that in which it was collected

It explained retention of the data allowed the TSA to ensure correct regulation the security fee and that the carrier had to retain the info for the report as well as calculations performed

Travel spend downAUSTRALIAN businesses

have been travelling more but spending less per trip according to figures released this week by Tourism Research Australia

The National Visitor Survey covering travel by Australians shows overnight business trips grew 8 to 199 million last financial year

However spending grew by only 2 over the previous year to $156 billion

Tourism Research Australia said this was due to an increase in shorter trips of one to three nights (up 13 to 144 million) and fewer longer trips (down 4 to 55 million)

CAAC lifts PED banPASSENGERS travelling on

Chinese aircraft will be able to use personal electronic devices (PED) from 01 Oct

Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) confirmed the decision earlier this week
