Term 3 - Week 8 P & C meet THIRD Monday of every MONTH, 7.00pm Fri 9 September, 2011
FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
This week: Fete and other P & C happenings Health Matters -whooping cough/pediculosis
NAPLAN Rule of the Week Fete and other P & C happenings
We’re excited that a fete is coming up and want our school
community to enjoy the fun and games. Ideally, a lot of
people doing a little bit of work to make it happen, is our goal.
Please read the information your P & C is distributing and put
your hand up to help; just a little bit.
Next week the P & C is having a cake stall at the Kincumber
Festival. The stall isn’t only about fund-raising, it is also about awareness-raising. We want the wider community to know about the great work that happens here at our school and the close relationship that exists between its members – students, parents, staff and other school supporters. We have received 30 tickets for one free ride at the Kincumber Festival and these will go to the first 30 cakes brought into
school on Friday 16 September.
Health Matters/Whooping cough
A person who attends Kincumber Public School has been diagnosed with Whooping Cough (pertussis). The illness is usually characterised by a feeling of being generally unwell with an accompanying deep harsh cough that tends to occur in bouts. The cough may be severe enough to cause the affected person to vomit after a bout of coughing.
Whooping Cough can cause a severe illness in young children particularly in children under the age of 1 year. Whooping Cough is usually spread by direct contact with the droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person produced whilst coughing. People at greatest risk of getting the illness are those who have had a considerable amount of face-to-face contact with a person with the disease. Whooping Cough can occur in people previously vaccinated.
We suggest that should any person develop some or all of the above symptoms that they consult their local doctor and
mention that there has been a case of Whooping Cough in the school. Health Matters/Pediculosis (head lice)
While head lice are often associated with schools they are not
necessarily spread in schools. The next couple of weeks, and
during the holidays, is a good time to really have a go at
eradicating as many of the little critters as you can. Families
should check for lice using the combing and conditioner
method on a weekly basis (check for information on our
website), or more often during an outbreak. Parents and
carers should report any active head lice following home
screening so that we can advise our community.
NAPLAN What is it? NAPLAN is the national assessment program in literacy and numeracy that is conducted across Australia in all education sectors in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9. Student results are reported on a common scale meaning that, for example, Band
6 in Year 3 describes the same level of performance as Band 6 in Year 7. Our school results will be released today and letters to parents advising their child’s NAPLAN results will be distributed on Monday. I will be able to report in more detail about our achievements next term after school staff have undertaken a detailed analysis.
Rule of the Week This week’s rules are about toilets. Teachers and students practised and talked about the following expectations that relate to our school’s four values of Care, Courtesy, Cooperation and Commonsense.
These expectations are important as we need good hygiene
practices to keep us healthy, for safety (wet floors are slip
hazards) and to ensure student safety.
Hope you had a great week at our great school!
