ForewordSchool memories form a large part of most people’s lives. Our upcoming exhibition School days will take you back to the classroom and the playground, through the memories of local residents, from the 1940s through to the 2000s. Explore the history of classroom evolution, uniforms, canteens and school punishments, and see how education has changed over the years. There’s also an opportunity to play a classic schoolyard game, and find out more about the local schools in the Georges River area.

The Georges River Art Prize returns this year, with an array of prize categories across painting, sculpture and youth. In 2017, our signature art event had a great response from entrants and visitors alike, showcasing high calibre works from local and national artists at Hurstville Museum & Gallery, and supporting emerging young artists from the area at Kogarah Library and Service Centre. Join us in October to find out who our finalists are, and who takes home the Georges River Art Prize, worth $10,000.

We are also excited to bring together several of the artists who have taken part in the Georges River Artist in Residence program this year, for a show in our Dragon’s Lair Gallery. This exhibition will explore the artists’ creative processes and highlight some of the diverse works they have produced whilst undertaking their residencies.

Hurstville Museum & Gallery is continually developing its public programs for people of all ages. Our regular art and craft programs for children aged 4 - 12 are a great way for creative kids to further their skills and have fun on the weekends. For adults, our Art in the Courtyard series returns with a focus on watercolour painting, and our Baby Explorers program lets new parents and carers explore the museum in a relaxed and supportive environment.

I hope to see you at one of our future events.

Hurstville Museum & Gallery collectionHurstville Museum & Gallery tells the stories of individuals, groups and communities in the St George area from its earliest peoples to the present day, and highlights how life has changed over the years. To tell these stories, Hurstville Museum & Gallery aims to collect and preserve items related to the history and community of St George.

Over the past six months, the Museum & Gallery has changed some of the objects on show as part of our exhibition St George Stories: people - places - community, in order to tell new stories and ensure the preservation of our more delicate items. We have also been growing our collection through community donations.

Shell-stringing is one of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community’s most culturally significant and closely-guarded traditions. kanalaritja: An Unbroken String features a variety of beautiful, delicate and rare shell necklaces, created by Tasmanian Aboriginal ancestors in the 1800s, and acclaimed makers of today, as well as a new wave of stringers who had the opportunity to learn the tradition through the luna tunapri (women’s knowledge) cultural revitalisation project. This exhibition is a culmination of the journey of cultural renewal, whilst also celebrating the generations of makers who have sustained this uniquely Tasmanian Aboriginal cultural practice.

Whether achieved through pencil, paint, sculpture or photography, the portrait has been an enduring presence throughout human history. The traditional definition of a portrait is an image that ‘only shows the face and shoulders’, however it is often so much more, capturing the personality and uniqueness of its subject. In the picture presents a series of portrait photographs selected from the Georges River Libraries Local Studies collection.
