2017 HUSKERS HUNGRY FOR NCAA TEAM FINALSAfter a top-seven national finish in 2016 and the program’s best finish since 1999, the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team is eager to build off that momentum in 2017. Nebraska hopes to set another milestone this season by advancing to the NCAA Team Finals for the first time since 1999 and finishing in the top six overall after missing the opportunity by .400 last season.

Senior LeadershipNU will depend on its two seniors to help lead the team both in the gym and in the classroom. All-American Austin Epperson played a significant role in the Husker lineup during the 2016 season. The Allen, Texas, native competed in every meet last season on floor, still rings and parallel bars. Epperson also appeared occasionally on high bar. Epperson competed in the postseason as well, advancing to the NCAA finals on floor for the first time. Epperson tied for fifth on the event and claimed his first All-America honor.

Fellow senior Coleman Tokar posted a personal-best score on floor last season of 14.80, and he’ll look to impact the team on that event in 2017. Both Epperson and Tokar have excelled outside of the gym. Epperson is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a seven-time pick to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. Tokar is a four-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. In the community, the duo was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2015 and 2016 for their service and leadership. Additionally, Tokar was awarded the Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in 2015 and participated in Nebraska Life Skills’ annual service trip in May 2016 to the Dominican Republic. The pair looks to close out their Husker careers at the 2017 NCAA Championships.

Junior ExperienceWith only two seniors, the juniors will be expected to make big contributions to the 2017 team. Totaling nine, they make up the largest class on the 2017 roster and add experience and skill to the team. Each junior has significant experience competing at the collegiate level and all but two have competed at the NCAA Championships in at least one year as a Husker.

Connor Adamsick had a breakthrough season in 2016, competing in every meet for Nebraska on floor and appearing occasionally on vault and pommel horse. The Mundelein, Ill., native competed in the postseason for the Huskers as well and advanced to the NCAA Championships Individual Event Finals on floor. Originally a walk-on, Adamsick’s hard work and effort earned him a scholarship following the 2016 season. Outside of competition, Adamsick was a star in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year and being named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall. Adamsick provided a huge presence in the community and was recognized for his volunteer efforts, earning the Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award and a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2016. Additionally, he was a member of Nebraska’s Life Skills service trip to the Dominican Republic in May 2016.

Antonio Castro played a key role in the pommel horse lineup last season, one of Nebraska’s best team events that broke the school record twice in 2016. The Pinecrest, Fla., native advanced to the Big Ten Championships Individual Event Finals last season and finished fourth overall on pommel horse. Castro is also expected to compete on high bar and vault for the Huskers after seeing plenty of action on those events last season. In the classroom, Castro earned Academic All-Big Ten Honors and a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for his service and leadership in the community. Kyle King became one of Nebraska’s top competitors on floor after breaking the school record against Air Force with a score of 15.85 on Jan. 23, 2016. He will be a key member on that event and will also contribute on pommel horse, vault and parallel bars in 2017. King also earned a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2016 for his work in the community.

Daniel Leal helped the Huskers on high bar and parallel bars as a sophomore. The Cali, Colombia, native competed in every meet for NU. He advanced to the Big Ten Championships Individual Event Finals, where he earned the silver medal on parallel bars with a career-high score of 15.425. Leal will be a leader in the classroom for the team as well. He earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades in 2016 and is a three-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.

Alex Magsam will play a vital role for Nebraska on rings and vault, after competing in every competition for the Huskers on both events last season. He earned a career-best score on vault (14.90) at Minnesota. In the final meet of the regular season, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native posted a career best on still rings (14.95). Magsam also competed at the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships on both events. Magsam has been a star in the classroom and in the community as well. He is a two-time CGA All-America Scholar Athlete, an Academic All-Big Ten pick and a four-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. Additionally, he earned a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2016.

Sanjaya Roy competed occasionally for the Huskers on parallel bars last season and posted a career-high score of 13.45 at Penn State. He will look for more action on that event and will also compete for a spot in the still rings and parallel bars lineups in 2017. Roy has been a leader in the classroom for the Huskers and is expected to continue the trend this season. The Douglassville, Pa., native is a two-time CGA All-American, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten pick and a four-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. Additionally, he was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for the second consecutive year for his volunteer work in the community.

Chris Stephenson, Travis Gollott and Brenon Sommers saw limited action last season due to injuries, but have been working hard during the offseason to contribute to the team in 2017 and pick up where they left off before getting hurt. Despite being out of competition for some of the season, the trio still made significant strides in the classroom and in the community. Stephenson earned Academic All-Big Ten and first-team CGA All-America Scholar Athlete honors in 2016 and has been named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll each semester he’s been at the university. Sommers also was named to the Academic All-Big Ten list as a sophomore and is a three-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. Gollott earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the Spring of 2014 and 2015. The three were also named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2016.

Sophomore StrengthDespite being underclassmen, Nebraska’s five sophomores bring a tremendous amount of talent and success to the team both in and out of the gym. Returning All-American Anton Stephenson competed on every event in each meet as a true freshman last season. He broke the school all-around record (88.90) and set three career-highs over 15.00 on floor (15.70), vault (15.25) and parallel bars (15.30). The Fishers, Ind., native advanced to the finals at both the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships and finished seventh on parallel bars at NCAAs to claim his first All-America honor. He was a three-time pick for Big Ten Freshman of the Week, becoming the first Husker male gymnast to win the honor.

Jordan King competed in all but two meets as a freshman, including the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships. The Houston, Texas, native was an important part of the pommel horse lineup that broke the school record for total event score. He advanced to the Big Ten Championship Individual Event Finals with a career-high score of 14.85 on the event. At the finals, King finished 10th overall. King also saw a lot of action on high bar and could help the Huskers on still rings and parallel bars as a sophomore. Both King and Stephenson were invited to represent the Huskers at the prestigious Winter Cup in Las Vegas last season.

Andrew Zymball performed in every meet last season as a redshirt freshman, including the conference championships and the NCAA Championships, usually on floor. The La Vista, Neb., native notched a career-best of 15.05 on the event and was a major part of one of the team’s best events last season. Zymball helped the Huskers break the school floor record twice in 2016. As a sophomore, Zymball is expected to regularly compete on floor for the Huskers, and he could also see some action on still rings, vault and parallel bars.

Joshua Everitt became a consistent member of the still rings lineup last season, especially during the second half of the season. Everitt appeared five times during the regular season and also competed in the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships. The Tucson, Ariz., native earned a career-best score of 14.45 against Iowa and Penn State and looks to build upon that in 2017.

Heath Anderson appeared once on still rings, but spent most of the season adjusting to collegiate competition and preparing for 2017. As a still rings specialist, he will look to help the Huskers on that event as a sophomore. Each member of the sophomore class was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for their efforts in the community in 2016.

Additionally, Stephenson, King, Zymball and Everitt have each earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll every semester they’ve been enrolled at Nebraska.

Freshman TalentThe freshman class includes Jacob Bonnay (Ontario, Canada), Evan Hymanson (Marlboro, N.J.) and Josh Martin (Buffalo Grove, Ill.). The trio had impressive junior careers before coming to Nebraska and look to start making an immediate impact on the team this season. The class also includes Austin Lober, a transfer from Illinois who joined the team in the middle of the 2017 season and is eligible to compete this season.

“LET IT BE BY THE CODE”History of men’s gymnastics scoring:Prior to 2005, both men’s and women’s gymnastics used the well-known scoring system with a top score of a “perfect 10.“ However, in 2005, gymnastics officials created a new scoring system for men’s gymnastics. In this new system, there is no limit to the score a gymnast can achieve for his routine. There have been several scoring changes since 2005, including one following the 2016 season. There are now only four element groups, instead of five, which means the maximium points a gymnast can receive in that category is 2.0, instead of 2.5. In 2017, fans can expect to see lower scores by about 0.5. There are three components used in judging a men’s gymnastics routine: difficulty, element groups and execution.

The Difficulty Score:There are nine countable skills, plus a dismount. Skill values range from A to H, with A being the easiest and H being the hardest. (A: 0.1, B: 0.2, C: 0.3, D: 0.4, E: 0.5, F: 0.6, G: 0.7, H: 0.8). Judges will add the values of the 10 skills together to get the gymnasts’ difficulty score.

Element Groups:There are four different element groups on each event and each group is worth 0.5. For each of the element groups that a gymnast fulfills, he receives 0.5. If all four element groups are fulfilled, a gymnast will receive 2.0.

Execution score:Each gymnast automatically starts with an execution score of 10.00. Judges can take the following deductions from that 10.00 score: small error (0.1), medium error (0.3), large error (0.5) or fall (1.0).

The totals of these three components are added together to reach a start value. A gymnasts’ final score is determined by taking his start value and subtracting for errors/deductions.

What to look for:Though the scoring system is complicated, fans can still identify great routines without knowing everything about the scoring system. When watching a routine, be sure to look for:

Good Form and Execution: A gymnast should always look as though he is in complete control, even when performing the most difficult of skills. Good form in gymnastics includes pointed toes, straight arms and legs and a tightness throughout the body. Every movement should look planned. Strength Moves Held Long Enough: On the still rings and on floor, the gymnast must stay in position for two seconds on each strength move (e.g. an iron cross). Height and Distance: In tumbling passes, vaults and release moves, the gymnast should look as if he is exploding off the apparatus. On vault, the distance a gymnast travels from the horse is also a factor in his final score. A Stuck Landing: On vaulting, dismounts, and tumbling passes on floor, the gymnast should end with a “stuck landing” -- he should not move his feet once they hit the ground. The gymnast is not allowed to lunge backward out of tumbling passes. (The women used to be able to do this without deduction, but it is now considered an error in women’s artistic as well). Uniqueness of the Routine: A great gymnast will perform a routine that looks different from the rest. It will have something special about it -- risky tricks, an artistic flair or skills that are simply unique from others performed in the competition.

PRESEASON COACHES POLL1. Oklahoma2. Stanford3. Ohio State4. Minnesota5. Illinois6. Penn State7. Iowa8. California9. Nebraska10. Michigan

HUSKERS RANKED NO. 9 IN PRESEASON POLL The Nebraska men’s gymnastics team ranks No. 9 in the 2017 Preseason Coaches Poll. In 2016, NU finished seventh nationally – the program’s best finish since 1999. Individually, four NU gymnasts earned All-America honors, including Austin Epperson and Anton Stephenson who both return for the Huskers in 2017. Epperson is joined by Coleman Tokar as the only two seniors on the Husker squad this season. They will be looked to for leadership, as the pair hopes to take Nebraska back to the NCAA Championships in 2017.

NU PICKED FIFTH IN BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL The Nebraska men’s gymnastics team is ranked fifth in the 2017 Big Ten Preseason Poll. Last season, the Huskers finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships and seventh at the NCAA Championships. The program’s seventh-place overall finish was its best since 1999. Ohio State tops the poll after claiming the 2016 Big Ten title. Minnesota holds the No. 2 spot. Illinois ranks third, while Penn State is No. 4. Iowa and Michigan are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively. Individually, Austin Epperson and Anton Stephenson were named

to the 2017 Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch List. Both Epperson and Stephenson are returning All-Americans this season. At the 2016 NCAA Championships, Epperson placed fifth on floor, while Stephenson earned seventh place on parallel bars. The list also includes Illinois’ Brandon Ngai and Alex Diab. Ngai took home the pommel horse title last season at the NCAA Championships, while Diab was the 2016 Big Ten still rings champion. Penn State’s Leroy Clarke Jr. is also on the list. The senior placed fifth on parallel bars at the 2016 Big Ten Championships.

CHALKBOARD NOTESBig Grips to FillThe Huskers lost three gymnasts to graduation after the 2016 season, including a pair of All-Americans in Ethan Lottman and Sam Chamberlain. Both Lottman and Chamberlain were two-time All-Americans on pommel horse and parallel bars, respectively. Additionally, both held the school record on their respective event. NU also lost Ryan Irick, who was a consistent member of the pommel horse and still rings lineups.

Element GroupsThe 2017 roster includes only two seniors in Austin Epperson and Coleman Tokar. The team will depend on its largest class - the nine juniors, to help the seniors lead the team both inside and outside of the gym. The upperclassmen make up more than half of the team. Of the remaining underclassmen, all but five have seen significant action in the gym, and only the three freshmen have yet to see any action in the gym at all.

Unroutine Season DebutFor the first time since 2003, the Huskers did not open their season at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. Nebraska kicked off the season in a new way at the West Point Open, as the team had not even competed at the competition since 2005.

Back in the Swing of ThingsThis season, Nebraska looks forward to the return of several gymnasts who were injured in 2016. Juniors Travis Gollott, Chris Stephenson and Brenon Sommers are expected to return to the lineups on many events for the Huskers. In 2015, Gollott was the Huskers’ only true all-arounder as sophomore. Stephenson was a key member on floor, high bar and parallel bars for the Huskers before he got injured. Sommers, a still rings specialist, was a big contributor on that event and hopes to be ready for action in 2017.

2RETURNING ALL-AMERICANSNebraska returns senior Austin Epperson and sophomore Anton Stephenson, who both earned their first All-America award at the 2016 NCAA Championships.

72016 TEAM FINISHNU finished seventh overall at the 2016 NCAA Championships. It was the program’s best finish since 1999.

11SCHOOL RECORDSIn 2016, the Huskers broke 11 school records, including total score, individual floor score and individual pommel horse record.

16RETURNING LETTERWINNERSThe Big Red returns 16 letterwinners from last season, including two seniors and nine juniors.

18LAST NCAA TEAM FINALThe 2017 Huskers look to make the team finals at the NCAA Championships for the first time in 18 years.

4CASTRO SHOOTS FOR FOURAntonio Castro is looking for his fourth consecutive meet with an event title this weekend. Castro claimed two on pommel horse and one on vault so far this season.

Strong Floor & Iron HorseLast season, floor and pommel horse were consistently two of the Huskers’ best events. The team broke the school record on both events last season, while Kyle King and Ethan Lottman broke the individual records on floor and pommel horse, respectively. This season, the Huskers return all members of the floor lineup and all but two on the pommel horse lineup, so the Huskers look to have strong performances on those events for a second consecutive year.
