    SAFETY RULES

WARNING: Always disconnectspark plug wire and place wire where it can-not contact spark plug to prevent accidentalstarting when setting up, transporting, ad-

justing or making repairs except carburetoradjustments.Because a chain saw is a high-speed wood-cutting tool, special safety precautions mustbe observed to reduce the risk of accidents.

Careless or improper use of this tool cancause serious injury.

PLAN AHEADS Read this manual carefully until you com-

pletely understand and can follow all safetyrules, precautions, and operating instruc-tions before attempting to use the unit.

S Restrict theuse of your saw to adult userswho understand and can follow safetyrules, precautions, and operating instruc-tions found in this manual.

S Wear protective gear. Always usesteel-toedsafety footwear with non-slip soles; snug-fit-ting clothing; heavy-duty, non-slip gloves;eye protection such as non-fogging, ventedgoggles or face screen; an approved safetyhard hat; and sound barriers (ear plugs or

mufflers) to protect your hearing. Regularusers should have hearing checked regular-ly as chain saw noise can damage hearing.Secure hair above shoulder length.

S Keep all parts of your body away from thechain when the engine is running.

S Keep children, bystanders, and animals aminimum of 30 feet (10meters) away fromthe work area. Do not allow other peopleor animals to be near the chain saw whenstarting or operating the chain saw.

S Do not handle or operate a chain sawwhen youarefatigued, ill, or upset, or ifyouhave taken alcohol, drugs, or medication.

You must be in good physical conditionand mentally alert. Chain saw work isstrenuous. If you have any condition thatmight be aggravated by strenuous work, check with your doctor before operating achain saw.

S Carefully planyour sawing operation in ad-vance. Donot startcuttinguntilyou haveaclear work area, securefooting, and, if youare felling trees, a planned retreat path.

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELYS Do not operate a chain sawwith one hand.

Serious injury to the operator, helpers, by-standers or any combination of these per-sons may result from one-handed opera-tion. A chain saw is intended for

two-handed use.S Operate the chain saw only in a well-venti-lated outdoor area.

S Do not operate saw from a ladder or in atree.

S Make sure the chain will not make contactwith any object while starting the engine.Never try to start the saw when the guidebar is in a cut.

S Do not put pressure on the saw at the endof the cut. Applying pressure can causeyou to lose control when the cut is com-pleted.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown.

S Do not operate a chain saw that is dam-aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-pletely and securely assembled. Alwaysreplace bar, chain, hand guard, or chainbrake immediately if it becomes damaged, broken or is otherwise removed.

S With the engine stopped, hand carry thechain saw with the muffler away from yourbody, and the guide bar and chain to therear, preferably covered with a scabbard.

MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDERS Have all chain sawservice performed by a

qualified service dealer with the exceptionof the items listed in the maintenance sec-tionof this manual. For example,if improp-er tools are used to remove or hold thefly-wheel whenservicingthe clutch, structuraldamage to the flywheel can occur andcause the flywheel to burst.

S Make certain the saw chain stops movingwhen the throttle trigger is released. Forcorrection, refer to CARBURETOR AD-JUSTMENTS.

S Never modify your saw in any way.S Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of oil

or fuel mixture.S Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-

teners securely tightened.S Use only HusqvarnaR accessories and

    replacement parts as recommended.

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTIONS Do not smoke while handling fuel or while

operating the saw.S Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in

the areas where fuel is mixed or poured. There should be no smoking, open flames,or work that couldcausesparks. Allowen-gine to cool before refueling.

S Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area onbare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, wellventilated place; and use an approved, marked container for all fuel purposes.Wipe up all fuel spills before starting saw.

S Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) from fuel-ing site before starting engine.

S Turn the engine off and let saw cool in anon-combustible area, not on dry leaves, straw, paper, etc. Slowly remove fuel capand refuel unit.

S Storethe unitand fuel in anareawhere fuelvapors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electric motors

    or switches, furnaces, etc.KICKBACK

WARNING: Avoid kickback whichcan result in serious injury. Kickback is thebackward, upward or sudden forwardmotionof the guide bar occurring when the sawchain near the upper tip of theguide bar con-tacts any object such as a log or branch, orwhen the wood closes in and pinches thesawchainin thecut. Contactinga foreignob-

ject in the wood can also result in loss ofchain saw control.S Rotational Kickback can occur when the

moving chain contacts an objectat theup-per tip of the guide bar. This contact cancause the chain to dig into the object,

which stops the chain for an instant. Theresult is a lightning fast, reverse reactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and back to-ward the operator.

S Pinch-Kickback can occur when the thewood closes in and pinches the movingsaw chain in the cut along the top of theguide bar and the saw chain is suddenlystopped. This sudden stopping of thechain results in a reversal of the chainforce used to cut wood and causes thesawto movein theoppositedirection ofthechain rotation. The saw is driven straightback toward the operator.

S Pull-In can occur when the moving chaincontacts a foreign object in the wood in thecut along the bottom of the guide bar and the

saw chain is suddenly stopped. This suddenstopping pulls the saw forward and awayfrom theoperatorand could easily cause theoperator to lose control of the saw.

Avoid Pinch --Kickback:S Be extremely aware of situations or ob-

structions thatcan cause material to pinchthe top of or otherwise stop the chain.

S Do not cut more than one log at a time.S Do not twist the saw as the bar is with-

drawn from an undercut when bucking.

Avoid Pull--In:S Always begin cutting with theengine at full

speed and the saw housing against wood.S Use wedges made of plastic or wood.

Never use metal to hold the cut open.

    Kickback Path

    Avoid Obstructions

    Clear The Working Area

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACKS Recognize that kickback can happen.

With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce the element of surprisewhich contributes to accidents.

S Never letthe moving chaincontactany ob-ject at the tip of the guide bar.

S Keep the working area free from obstruc-tions suchas other trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoidany obstruction that your saw chain couldhit while you are cutting. When cutting a

branch, do not let the guide bar contactbranch or other objects around it.S Keep your saw chain sharp and properly

tensioned. A loose or dull chain can in-crease the chance of kickback occurring.Follow manufacturers chain sharpeningand maintenanceinstructions. Check ten-sion at regular intervals with the enginestopped, never with the engine running.Make sure the chain brake nuts are se-curely tightened after tensioning thechain.

S Begin and continue cutting at full speed. Ifthe chain is moving at a slower speed, there is greater chance of kickback occur-ring.

S Cut one log at a time.S Use extreme caution when re-entering a

previous cut.S Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of

the bar (plunge cuts).S Watch for shifting logs or other forces that

could close a cut and pinch or fall intochain.

S Use the Reduced--Kickback Guide Barand Low--Kickback Chain specified foryour saw.

    Elbow locked

S Keep a good, firm grip on thesaw with bothhands when the engine is running anddontlet go. A firm grip will help youreducekickback and maintain control of the saw.Keep the fingers of your left hand encir-cling and your left thumb under the fronthandlebar. Keep your right hand com-pletely around the rear handle whetheryour areright handed or left handed. Keepyour left arm straight with the elbowlocked.

S Position your left hand on the front handle-bar so it is in a straight line with your righthand on the rear handle when makingbucking cuts. Never reverse right and lefthand positions for any type of cutting.

S Stand withyour weight evenly balancedon

both feet.S Stand slightly to the left side of the saw to

keep your body from being in a direct linewith the cutting chain.

S Do not overreach. You could be drawn orthrown off balance and lose control of thesaw.

S Do not cutabove shoulderheight. It isdiffi-cult to maintain control of saw aboveshoulder height.

    KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

WARNING: The following featuresare included on your saw to help reduce thehazard of kickback; however, such featureswill not totally eliminate this danger. As achain sawuser, do not rely only on safety de-vices. You must follow all safety precau-tions, instructions, and maintenance in thismanual to help avoid kickback and otherforces which can result in serious injury.S Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar, designed

with a small radius tip which reduces thesize of the kickback danger zone on thebar tip. A Reduced--Kickback Guide Barhas been demonstrated to significantly re-duce the number andseriousness of kick-backs.

S Front Hand Guard, designed to reduce thechanceof your left hand contacting the chainif your hand slips off the front handlebar.

S Position of front and rear handlebars, de-signed with distancebetween handlesandin-line with each other. The spread andin-line position of the hands provided bythis design work together to give balanceand resistance in controlling the pivot ofthe saw back toward the operator if kick-back occurs.

WARNING: DO NOT RELY UPONANY OF THE DEVICES BUILT INTO YOURSAW. YOU SHOULD USETHE SAW PROP-ERLY AND CAREFULLY TO AVOID KICK-BACK. Reduced--kickback guide bars andlow--kickback saw chains reduce the chanceand magnitude of kickback and are recom-mended. Your saw has a low kickback chainand bar as original equipment. Repairs on achain brake should be made by an authorizedservicing dealer. Take your unit to the place ofpurchase if purchased from a servicing dealer,or to the nearest authorized master servicedealer.

S Tip contact insome cases may cause a light-ning fast reverse REACTION, kicking theguide bar up and back toward the operator.

    S

Pinchingthe sawchainalong thetop oftheguide bar may push the guide bar rapidlyback toward the operator.

S Either of thesereactions may cause youtolose control of the saw which could resultin serious injury.Do not rely exclusivelyuponthe safety devices built intoyour saw.

CHAIN BRAKES Chain Brake, designedto stop the chain in

    the event of kickback.

WARNING: Your chain saw isequipped with a chain brakethat is designedto stop the chain immediately if you get akickback. The chain brake reduces the riskof accidents, but only you can prevent them.DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE CHAIN

BRAKE WILL PROTECT YOU IN THEEVENT OF A KICKBACK.

    CHAIN BRAKE

WARNING: If the brake band isworn too thin it may break when the chainbrake is triggered. Witha broken brake band, the chain brake will not stop the chain. Thechain brake should be replacedby an autho-rized service dealer if any part is worn tolessthan 0,5 mmthick. Repairs ona chain brakeshould be made by an authorized servicedealer. Take your unit to the place of pur-chase if purchased from a servicing dealer,or to the nearest authorized master servicedealer.

S This saw is equipped with a chain brake. The brake is designed to stop the chain ifkickback occurs.

S The inertia--activated chain brake isactivated if the front hand guard is pushedforward, either manually (by hand) orautomatically (by sudden movement).

S If the brake is already activated, it isdisengaged by pulling thefront hand guardback toward the front handle as far aspossible.

S When cutting with the saw, the chainbrakemust be disengaged.

This is the only instancewhen the sawshould be placed on the ground with the en-gine running.Place the saw on firm ground. Grip the rearhandlewith your righthandand thefront han-dle with your left hand. Apply full throttle byfully depressing the throttle trigger. Activatethe chain brake by turning your left wristagainst the hand guard without releasingyour grip around the front handle. The chainshould stop immediately.

    Inertia activating function control

WARNING: When performing thefollowing procedure, the engine must beturned off.Grip therear handle with your right hand andthe front handle with your left hand. Hold thechain saw approximately 14 (35 cm) abovea stump or other wooden surface. Releaseyour grip on the front handle and use theweight of the saw to let the top of the guidebar fall forward and contact the stump. When the tip of the bar hits the stump, thebrake should activate.

    CUTTING METHODS

IMPORTANT POINTSS Check chain tension before first use and af-

ter 1 minute of operation. See CHAIN TEN-SION in the ASSEMBLY section.

S Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics, masonry, non-wood building materials, etc.

S Stopthe saw if the chain strikes a foreign ob-ject. Inspect the saw and repair or replace

parts as necessary.S Keep the chain out of dirt and sand. Even asmall amount of dirt will quickly dull a chainand thus increase the possibility of kickback.

S Practice cutting a few small logs using thefollowing techniques to get thefeel of usingyour saw before you begin a major sawingoperation.S Squeeze the throttle trigger and allow the

engine to reach full speed before cutting.S Begin cutting with the saw frame against

the log.S Keep the engine at full speed the entire

time you are cutting.S Allow the chain to cut for you. Exert only

light downward pressure. If you force thecut, damage to the bar, chain, or enginecan result.

S Release thethrottle trigger as soon as thecut is completed, allowing the engine toidle. If you run the saw at full throttle with-outa cutting load, unnecessary wear can

occur to the chain, bar, and engine.S To avoid losing controlwhen cut is com-

plete, donotput pressureon sawat endof cut.

S Stop the enginebefore setting the sawdownafter cutting.

    TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES

WARNING: Check for broken ordead branches which can fall while cuttingcausing serious injury. Do not cut near build-ings or electrical wires if you do not know thedirection of tree fall, nor cut at night since youwill not be ale to see well, nor during badweather such as rain, snow, or strong winds, etc. If the tree makes contact with any utilityline, the utility company should be notified im-mediately.S Carefully planyour sawing operation in ad-

vance.S Clear the work area. You need a clear area

all around the tree so you can have securefooting.

S The chain saw operator should keep onthe uphill side of the terrain as the tree islikely torollor slidedownhill afterit is felled.

S Study the natural conditions that can causethe tree to fall in a particular direction.

  • 8/6/2019 Husq 142 manual HOEN2005_5301661-32

    10/16

    10

Natural conditions that can cause a tree tofall in a particular direction include:S The wind direction and speed.S The lean of the tree. The lean of a tree

might not be apparent due to uneven orsloping terrain. Use a plumb or level to de-termine the direction of tree lean.

S Weight and branches on one side.S Surrounding trees and obstacles.Look for decay and rot. If the trunk is rotted,it can snap and fall toward the operator.Check for broken or dead branches whichcan fall on you while cutting.Make sure there is enough room for the treeto

fall. Maintain a distance of 2-1/2 tree lengthsfrom the nearest person or other objects. En-gine noise can drown out a warning call.Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, sta-ples, and wire from the tree wherecuts aretobe made.Plan a clear retreat path to therear and diag-onal to the line of fall.

    Direction of Fall

    45_

    Plan a clear retreat path

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger)The notch method is used to fell large trees.

A notch is cut ontheside ofthetree inthede-sired direction of fall. After a felling cut ismade on the opposite side of tree, the treewill tend to fall into the notch.

NOTE: If the tree has large buttress roots, removethembefore making thenotch. If us-ing saw to remove buttress roots, keep sawchain fromcontacting ground to preventdull-ing of the chain.

    NOTCH CUT AND FELLING THETREES

Make notch cut by cutting the top of thenotch first. Cut through 1/3 of the diameterofthe tree. Next complete the notch bycut-ting the bottom of the notch. See illustra-tion. Once the notch is cut, remove thenotch of wood from the tree.

    5 cm

    5 cm

S After removing the wood from the notch, make the felling cut on the opposite side ofthenotch. This is doneby making a cutabouttwo inches higher than the center of thenotch. This will leave enough uncut woodbetween the felling cut and the notch to forma hinge. This hinge will help prevent the treefrom falling in the wrong direction.

    Openingof fellingcut

    Closing ofnotch

Hinge holds tree on stump and helpscontrol fall

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete, usewedges to open the cut when necessary tocontrol thedirection of fall. To avoid kickbackand chain damage, use wood or plasticwedges, but never steel or iron wedges.S Be alert to signs that the tree is ready to fall:

cracking sounds, widening of the felling cut,or movement in the upper branches.

S As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it down, and get away quickly on your planned re-treat path.

S DO NOT cut down a partially fallen treewith your saw. Be extremely cautious withpartially fallen trees that may be poorlysupported. When a tree doesnt fall com-pletely, setthesaw asideandpull downthetree with a cable winch, block and tackle,or tractor.

    CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)

Bucking is the term used for cutting a fallentree to the desired log size.

WARNING: Donot stand on the logbeing cut. Any portion can roll causing lossof footing and control. Do not stand downhillof the log being cut.

IMPORTANT POINTSS Cut only one log at a time.S Cut shattered wood very carefully; sharp

pieces of wood could be flung toward opera-tor.

S Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Neverallow another person to hold the log whilecutting and neverholdthe logwith your legor foot.

S Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, and roots are tangled such as in a blowndown area. Drag the logs intoa clear areabefore cutting by pulling out exposed andcleared logs first.

    TYPES OF CUTTING USED FORBUCKING

WARNING: If saw becomes pinchedorhung ina log, dont try to force it out. Youcanlose control of the saw resultingin injury and/ordamage to the saw. Stop the saw, drive awedge of plastic or wood into the cut until thesaw can be removed easily. Restart the sawandcarefullyreenterthe cut. To avoid kickbackand chain damage, do not use a metal wedge.Do not attempt to restart your saw when it ispinched or hung in a log.

Use a wedge to remove pinched saw

Turn saw OFF and use a plastic orwooden wedge to force cut open.

Overcutting begins on the topsideof thelogwith the bottom of the saw against the log. When overcutting use light downward pres-sure.

    Overcutting Undercutting

Undercutting involves cutting on the under-sideof the log withtopof saw against the log. When undercutting use light upward pres-sure. Hold saw firmly and maintain control. The saw will tend to push back toward you.

WARNING: Never turn saw upsidedown to undercut. The saw cannot be con-trolled in this position.

Always make your first cut on the compres-sion side of the log. The compressionsideofthe log is where the pressure of the logsweight is concentrated.

    Second cut

First cut on compression side of log

First cut on compression side of log

    Second cut

BUCKING WITHOUT A SUPPORTS Overcut through 1/3 of the diameter of the

    log.

S Roll the log over and finish with a secondovercut.

S Watch for logs with a compression side toprevent the saw from pinching. See il-

S Watch out for springpoles. Use extremecaution when cutting small size limbs.Slender material may catch the saw chainand be whipped toward you or pull you offbalance.

S Be alert for springback. Watch out forbranches that are bent or under pressure.

Avoid being struck by the branch or thesaw when the tension in the wood fibers isreleased.

S Keep a clear work area. Frequently clearbranches out of the way to avoid trippingover them.

LIMBINGS Alwayslimba tree after itis cutdown. Only

then can limbing be done safely and prop-erly.

S Leave the larger limbs underneath thefelled tree to support the tree as you work.

S Start at thebaseof thefelled tree andworktoward the top, cutting branches andlimbs. Remove small limbs with one cut.

S Keep the tree between you and the c hain.Cut from the side of the tree opposite thebranch you are cutting.

S Remove larger, supporting branches withthecuttingtechniques describedin BUCK-ING WITHOUT A SUPPORT.

S Always use an overcut to cut small and

freely hanging limbs. Undercutting couldcause limbs to fall and pinch the saw.

    PRUNING

WARNING: Limit pruning to limbsshoulder height or below. Do not cut ifbranches are higher than your shoulder.Geta professional to do the job.S Make your fist cut 1/3 of the way

through the bottom of the limb.S Next make a 2nd cut all the way
