“Anywhere ... Anytime”. That motto hasseen Hutchies travel far afield to satisfytheir customers’ needs.

This willingness to go where clients wantwork done has resulted in Hutchies some-times taking on work far from its tradition-al base in Queensland.

These projects have included a truckfactory in Canada, a winery in NewZealand, as well as an historic bicentennialrestoration in Tenterfield, and a new com-munity at Casuarina Beach (both in NewSouth Wales).

HUTCHIES’

HUTCHIES had a won-derful year in 2002 andwe’re geared for another big one in2003.

One of the things that has occurredover the past couple of years, aboutwhich I am really pleased, is thenumber of quality people seeking tojoin Hutchies.

I believe it is because now we havesuch a great capacity to handle jobsof all sizes, whether they are $50,000minor works projects or major high-rise developments.

We have concentrated on retainingour “bread and butter”, up to $10million market share, while ex-panding into the big end of town –through a combination of a verystrong balance sheet and the inte-gration of numerous high qualitypeople, including estimators, costplanners, contract administratorsand construction people into ourexisting team.

We have been able to bring seniorpeople from the larger corporate sec-tor into the Hutchies’ family businessculture and the results are great.

I am sure our clients are seeing thisin the field.

Hutchies’ focus for this year is todo what we have on our books – anddo it well.

To achieve this, we are totallyreliant upon our 250 companymembers together with our loyalsubbies and consultants.

WHEN the last ‘Truth’was distributed, we re-ceived a complaint that itwas “unprofessional”.

The person asked thathis organisation be re-moved from the mailinglist.

I felt I should apologise to anyone whowas offended, and explain the culturebehind the ‘Truth’.

It was originally an internal newsletter, toinform Hutchinson’s people what was hap-pening on projects and socially. To make itreadable, we leaned towards the morehumorous happenings.

We felt that we also should have anewsletter to inform our clients of what isgoing on.

However, we noted that newsletters we

received from other companies were sel-dom, if ever, read.

We thought that by sending our internalnewsletter externally, it would give aninsight into Hutchies’ culture and possiblybe interesting enough not to head straightfor the many waste paper baskets.

We wanted it to be fun and a littleraunchy, similar to the old ‘Brisbane Truth’.

It was no good giving staff or others aprofessional newsletter and not have itread.

We assure you, we do all we can to beprofessional in the workplace and alwayslook for ways to improve.

Your feedback, good or bad, on the‘Truth’ would be welcomed, as we havetaken this complaint seriously.

“WE’VE just built the best winery theworld’s ever seen!”

That’s a big claim – but Hutchies canmake it, with the successful opening ofCraggy Range Winery, at Hawkes Bay,New Zealand.

Craggy Range has a dedication to styleand excellence and when Hutchies waschosen as Project Manager, after anexhaustive selection process, they wereprepared to take the most detailed anddefinitive brief they had ever received.

Hutchies’ instruction was that no effortwas to be spared to produce the highestquality outcome obtainable within thebudget.

Hutchies studied wine making installa-tions around the world and sought thefinest materials, technology and designsolutions.

The client’s brief demanded that CraggyRange had to include the most advancedtechnology, best worldwide winery prac-tice, highest level process engineeringand incorporate the best new millenniumthinking.

It also had to be beautiful, environmen-tally responsible, steeped in history, atmosphere and image. It had to be ahappy and productive place that wouldhonour the ancient art of wine making.

The Master Plan included a winemak-ing complex to house all stages of thewine making process and a businessvillage, which would cleverly combinemodern business practices with a homely“country village” feel.

The complex includes an administra-tion centre, barrel halls, underground cel-lar, viewing hall, assembly area, retail sec-tion, accommodation, restaurant andspectacular surrounds, with a man-madelake.

Working with multi-skilled specialistteams of consultants from Australia andNew Zealand, Hutchies brought togetherall components of this master planned

two-site project for a successful comple-tion on time, on budget and to the expec-tations of the client.

Terry Peabody, vigneron and proprietorof Craggy Range Winery and Vineyards, said his family had a dream to create greatwine and in the process build one of theworld’s most inspirational wineries.

He said the quest was for Craggy Rangeto become one of New Zealand’s mostoutstanding wine and food landmarks.

“Over the past four years my family, together with our partner Steve SmithMW and the winery team, have workedwith designers and technical advisors tocreate a new winery of which I amimmensely proud,” Mr Peabody said.

To sing Craggy Range’s praises, the offi-cial opening included Dame Kiri TeKanawa, Tim Finn, international tenorPatrick Power, Auckland Philharmoniaand Sir Edmund Hilliary in a spectacularnight of wine, food and song.

ROWING recently returned to its trad-itional home on the Milton Reach of theBrisbane River, with the introduction ofRegattaFest 2002, and Hutchies wasthere to help it happen as one of theevent’s major sponsors.

The first RegattaFest established itselfas Brisbane’s biggest annual rowingfestival with 300 competitors and 8000spectators.

South East Queensland’s leading GPSrowing schools and clubs were joined for the event by Brisbane’s corporatecommunity, as well as leading radio andtelevision personalities, to raise money for The Royal Children’s Hospital Found-ation.

Apart from helping sick children,RegattaFest has ensured the MiltonReach will continue its traditional linkwith the sport of rowing, with plans for the rowing festival to be held everyyear to bring the excitement and glamourof a major rowing festival back to theheart of the city.

• In a separate event, known as theHead of the Brisbane Regatta, there werenine major sponsors for the 2002 Head of the Brisbane Regatta, and Hutchies

were the sponsors of the Schoolgirls’Open Quad race.

The regatta was a great success withexcellent weather, good venue, generoussponsors, great rowing, and quality cater-ing, all running like clockwork. The dayalso enabled the Toowong Rowing Clubto raise funds to support its program.OARNOTE: From 1918 to 1973, the boys’Head of the River and, from 1990 to 1993the girls’ Head of the River, was battledout on the Milton Reach.

THE Far North Coast Branch of Surf LifesavingNew South Wales was the real winner in therecent 2002 Casuarina Surf Classic – as the recip-ient of a $30,000 cheque raised by the event.

The crowd enjoyed spectacular surfing displays, music and food at the inaugural event.

It was so successful, that organisers are planningthe next show, which will be expanded to includethe Surfing Classic, a Fishing Classic and a Music,Food and Market Festival in the Central Parklandsat Casuarina Beach. This will be one not to bemissed and Hutchies will keep you posted!

New internal trade force tobe industry troubleshootersHUTCHIES has expandedits internal “trade force” tobetter handle some of itsmore complex subcontractpackages.

Managing Director, GregQuinn, said the diversity ofwork and number of pro-jects on the company’sbooks at any given time providedHutchies with great scope to allocatework to its own internal subbiegroups.

“Hutchies traditionally has had alarge directly employed workforceand our greater expansion into thisarea is simply an extension of theway we have always done business,”Greg said.

“With a turnover of around $300macross approximately 200 jobs peryear, it is the intention of our varioussubbie groups to take on about fiveper cent of our total book,” he said.

“We intend to allocate the remain-

ing 95 per cent of our workin the traditional way, tospecialist external subbies, and we don’t intend to haveour own subbie groupsdoing anything other thenHutchies’ work.

“In fact, most of the sub-contractors in the market

place are happy with our subbieoperations, because we are taking onthe most difficult jobs ourselves, managing the risks and leaving themore straight forward and largerprojects to traditional subbies,” Gregexplained.

Hutchies now has seven subbiegroups and is extremely pleased withthe positive results.

Hutchies’ trade force includesConan Beale overseeing operations,a 100-strong team in our InternalLinings operation and Ray Bal-ladone and Ivan and the boys in theTiling Division.

VALE ~ Geoff Box IT is with great regretthat we report the pass-ing of one of Queens-land’s most respectedbuilders, Geoffery JosephBox, FAIB, FAIQS.

Geoff passed awaypeacefully in his sleepearly Sunday morning,January 10, 2003.

He was in Tamworth with Jack Hutchinson, attending the Country Music Festival. Geoffand Jack were close friends.

Geoff, as well as being an excellent builder, was highly respected by his employees, professionals, subcontractors and peers.

He made a great contribution to the build-ing industry, having been President of theAustralian Institute of Building QueenslandChapter, and a long time councillor andmember of the Executive of the QueenslandMaster Builders Association.

Our sympathy is expressed to his wife,Margaret, and his family.

Scott hands over the “Punk at Sixteen”bracelet and Livid Festival ticket.

IT has been a happy ending for the saga, that saw Scott Hutchinson wearing abracelet into Brisbane boardrooms, declaring him to be a “Punk at Sixteen”.

Scott wore the bracelet as part of a pact

with a young offender, who was arrestedfor vandalising a Hutchies’ building site.

The juvenile offender was ordered to acommunity conference, where Scottrequested the offender complete commu-nity service for SANDS (Stillbirth andNeonatal Death Support) and surrenderthe bracelet, which had been made forthe youth by his girlfriend.

Under the agreement, Scott wouldreturn the bracelet with a ticket to theLivid Festival, provided the youth did notre-offend.

The youth stayed on the straight andnarrow and has decided to go back toschool and complete his education.

The Justice Department is delightedwith the result.

Scott forfeited the bracelet as part ofthe deal, but the youth promised to makeScott another one to replace it.

Happy end to Punk at Sixteen saga

HUTCHIES has taken beach culture on board, following its involvementwith the Casuarina Beach project in New South Wales. Hutchies

recently set up a beach shack as part of a sponsorship with Ripcurl and Consolidated Properties to support the Cabarita Boardriders

Club Annual Junior Surfing Challenge. The two-day Challengeattracted 130 competitors, aged nine to 18, from Cronulla

to Noosa. Weather was superb and surfing was avery high standard – and, to add moreexcitement to the day, a pod of whalesjoined in just behind the competition area.

Support for marathon canoe effortERIN O’Keeffe and her family have thanked Hutchies forsupport, which enabled her to represent Australia during2002 as a member of the national Marathon Canoe Team.

Erin competed in the Australian Marathon CanoeChampionships (1st place); the World Cup MarathonCanoe Championships (5th place); and the QueenslandMarathon Canoe Championships (1st place).
