all the one hundred horses on the ranch why was it Ki?”,“Why did this happen to me?” Ki was the anchor of ourprogram. And there is so much more to do. Perhaps thegreater question to ask is, “What can I learn from thisgreat horse and his life?”I am a livestock producer and I am involved with a

large number of animals. Birth and death are regular ex-periences. Somehow this loss is different. We will mournthe loss of Ki in a much more profound way. He was spe-cial to my family and me. You could say he was a part ofthe family. Ki was never paraded through a sale ring. Ipicked him when he was a young colt still on his motherin the green meadows of the sand hills of Ericson, NE. Hewas in the keeper group of colts because he was so good.

From weanling to death, Ki had some kind of power inhis presence that made you stop and take another look.He was the kind of horse that inspired my dreams for thefuture. There will be many pages in my ‘book of life’ thatwill involve Ki Two Eyed. He was the very essence ofHutchings Performance Horses. Not only did he look likea champion, he became one. My only regret is that I did-n’t know how or have the means to make him even morefamous. What I did know was how great he really was.In the end that is all that really matters.

Many friends of mine along the way have shared myexperiences with Ki Two Eyed. May I mention two in thiswriting? Ken Andrus of Lava Hot Springs, ID was re-sponsible for introducing me to the folks at Pitzer Ranchin Nebraska. Jim Brinkman, of Pitzer Ranch, was thebreeder and trainer of Ki. Were it not for these two peo-ple, my vision of producing quality quarter horses mightnot have happened.

Ki was a strong breeder. He had one hundred seventy-five foals in thirteen crops. There is one crop left to countthis coming spring. His offspring are loved and appreci-ated by many.

Never did I feel like Ki had completed his purpose inour program. I thought that there would be many morebreeding seasons and offspring. But death has its owntime line. It’s my belief that God knows the day and hourof that appointment. I will accept it as His will. My greatfriend Ki Two Eyed and I will meet again in a betterplace.

The bitterness of the decision to euthanize Ki actuallybecame a spiritual experience. I’m not sure I have theright words to explain, but after administering the anes-thetic, he gracefully collapsed to the ground. Dr. Faughtlistened for his heart to stop and then he left this mortalexistence of pain. I was warmed by a feeling that life goeson after death and that his departure from this life wascomfortable and swift. Death is nothing but a door that isopened to the next life. What can I learn from this greathorse and his life here? Life is sweet and life is eternal.

The day after Ki’s passing, my sadness graduallyturned to thankfulness. I’m thankful for a fifteen-yearjourney that was filled with wonderful experiences and awide-reaching group of new friends. I’m thankful for thesatisfaction of owning a stallion that could stamp his ba-bies, head out of the box, and be gentle enough for a goodfriend to ride when we gathered cows. I’m thankful thatKi Two Eyed was a big part of my dream come true.

Ki Two EyedMay 28, 1998-Nov. 20, 2013

On November 20, 2013, tragedy came unannouncedand unexpected. Late in the afternoon in some freakway, Ki Two Eyed must have gotten his leg stuck in thepipe fence of his corral, tried standing up without free-ing his leg and somehow broke his femur bone up highin his hip. Because of this impossible situation, Ki hadto be put down. Life ended that day but his legacy willlive on forever. He has graduated to a greater realm.

Tragedy has its purpose and leaves many questionsin its wake. My first thoughts were, “Why Ki?”, “Of
