We l ive in a d ig ita l ly-saturated world. I t ’s always a work in progress to educate our chi ldren about the challenges and opportunit ies of d ig ita l devices. Here at HIS we discuss and learn about d ig ita l c it izenship. We use Circle Time and other learn ing act iv it ies to help to empower young people to make good dec is ions and be accountable. You can continue to support from home by talking with your chi ldren about the ‘r ipple effect ’ of their onl ine act ions and decis ions, whether it be post ing about their peers on soc ia l media, remain ing focussed on school-appropr iate sites, or leaving personal detai ls onl ine. We recommend
checking out the Netsafe website to get some pract ical adv ice and ideas.

2016 National Standards
We are pleased to be able to share our National Standards results for 2016 with you. The initial gathering of interim teacher judgements was done in Term 2 with the final overall teacher judgement being made in Term 4. In 2016 there was a particular focus on teachers analysing what they do to meet the needs of various students in the class. This focus has shown significant improvement in the achievement levels of all students in reading and also in writing. We will continue to have this focus in 2017. We would like to thank all parents and caregivers for the support, help and encouragement they give to their children each and every day.
As reading was the focus of our teacher inquiries in 2016, it is pleasing to note the following: Of the 123 students from across the school who were ‘below’ the National Standard at the beginning of the year, only 31 of those students remain ‘below’ Of the 61 students from across the school who were well below the National Standard at the beginning of the year, only 14 of those students remain ‘well below’

YEAR 7 FOOD TECHNOLOGY REMINDER
A quick reminder that on Friday, Year 7 students doing Food Technology will be making a savoury Mexican beef or vegetarian sauce which they will be bringing home. This will need to be kept in the fridge until time to use, then re-heated to a high temperature all the way through. Students should have planned with their families what they will be making from it once they get it home e.g. Nachos, Burritos, Enchiladas or Tacos - but you can let your imaginations go! Any questions please feel free to contact me on [email protected]. Thank you, Mrs Gates
