1. Welcome

Dear students of The University of Sydney,

We hereby officially welcome you to the HUWISU “Experience Germany” course at

Humboldt‐Universität zu Berlin. We look forward to spending an interesting and

engaging time with you throughout your course.

All relevant information on the program and your course will be provided via Moodle.

You will have access to readings, general information on your courses, the HUWISU

cultural program etc.

How to use Moodle?

First you must successfully complete the online registration via the HUWISU website

https://huwisu.de/. From there you will receive detailed information via email on how

to create a Moodle account and how to sign up for the Moodle course “Experience

Germany 2019”.

If you have any questions before your departure or during your time in Berlin, the

HUWISU Team will gladly answer your questions.

examples of the perfect tense and past tense of "sein" and "haben". the complete system of conjugated forms in the present tense usage/consolidation of modal particles, common in spoken language, such as "denn", "ja", "aber"

Review on basic topics as required. outlook on the usage of grammatical tenses in German. work in plenary session (discussion lead by the teacher). exercises for fluent speaking. work in small groups, presentation.

6. Culture Class

In addition to your German language class you will have to sign up for two culture

classes. (Language of instruction: English).

How to sign up for your culture classes?

You will have to sign up for your culture classes via Moodle. The instructions on how

to create a Moodle account and sign up for the course will be sent to you in a

separate email.

You will be asked to choose and rank three culture classes. From there you will be

placed according to your selection and the course capacity. We will let you know

which culture class you are in via email shortly before the start of the course.

Topics

GERMAN SOCIAL MARKET ECONOMY (4.12 and 6.12)

Germany is a powerful exporter in various economic sectors and a large industrial

power with global significance. However, Germany would not be a global leader

without its social welfare system called the “Social Market Economy.” In this class,

students learn how Germany gained power after World War II and the relationship

between capitalism and social welfare.

OVERVIEW: GERMAN HISTORY (5.12 and 7.12)

A lecture, with an overview of the socio-historic, religious struggles and political

history that shaped Germany as a nation and an introduction of represented idealism

that contributed to the making of the "German Nation".

OVERVIEW: POLITICAL AND PARTY SYSTEM OF GERMANY (10.12 and 12.12)

A study of the structure of the party system in Germany and current political debates

in Germany, as well as a comparison to the political system of the USA.

EXPERIENCE CULTURE THROUGH MUSEUMS (11.12 and 13.12)

Get to know relevant key aspects of Berlin’s museological landscape and understand

how memories are kept alive.

7. Social Program Preview

The HUWISU “Experience Germany” program aims to give all participants an

unforgettable stay here in Berlin. Therefore, we invite you to take part in our diverse

social program which includes excursions, sports activities and social gatherings.

An overview of all planned activities including the dates and times will be provided

shortly before the program starts. In the meantime, here is a sneak peak of some of

the many events offered during HUWISU’s cultural program in December…

Christmas Market

Nothing is better to get in the mood for

Christmas than spending a nice evening on

one of Berlin’s Christmas markets enjoying

mulled wine and typical Christmas candies.

Potsdam Day Trip

Potsdam, the capital of the Federal State

Brandenburg, is well-known for its

charming cultural landscape dotted with

places and historic gardens, which have

been on the *UNESCO’s World Heritage*

list since 1990. We will see famous sights

like ‘Nikolaikirche’, the old town hall and

the ‘Holländisches Viertel’. Potsdam is

definitely worth a visit!
