This device is designed as a driver for AC-electroluminescent displays. It can also be used in any application requiring multiple-output high-voltage current sinking capabilities, such as driving inkjet and electrostatic print heads, plasma panels, vacuum fluorescent or large matrix LCD displays. This device consists of a 32-bit Shift register, 32 latches and control logic to perform the polarity selection and blanking of the outputs. Data is shifted through the Shift register on the high-to-low transition of the clock. The HV5623 shifts clockwise when viewed from the top of the package. A data output buffer is provided for cascading devices. This output reflects the current status of the last bit of the Shift register. Operation of the Shift register is not affected by the LE (latch enable), BL (blanking) and the POL (polarity) inputs. Transfer of data from the Shift register to the latch occurs when the LE (latch enable) input is high. The data in the latch is stored when LE is low. Applications

General DescriptionThe HV5623 is a low-voltage serial to high-voltageparallel converter with open-drain outputs. This deviceis designed as a driver for AC-electroluminescentdisplays. It can also be used in any applicationrequiring multiple-output high-voltage current sinkingcapabilities, such as driving inkjet and electrostaticprint heads, plasma panels, vacuum fluorescent orlarge matrix LCD displays.

This device consists of a 32-bit Shift register, 32 latchesand control logic to perform the polarity selection andblanking of the outputs. Data is shifted through the Shiftregister on the high-to-low transition of the clock. TheHV5623 shifts clockwise when viewed from the top ofthe package. A data output buffer is provided forcascading devices. This output reflects the currentstatus of the last bit of the Shift register. Operation ofthe Shift register is not affected by the LE (latchenable), BL (blanking) and the POL (polarity) inputs.Transfer of data from the Shift register to the latchoccurs when the LE (latch enable) input is high. Thedata in the latch is stored when LE is low.

Note the following details of the code protection feature on Microchip devices:• Microchip products meet the specification contained in their particular Microchip Data Sheet.

• Microchip believes that its family of products is one of the most secure families of its kind on the market today, when used in the intended manner and under normal conditions.

• There are dishonest and possibly illegal methods used to breach the code protection feature. All of these methods, to our knowledge, require using the Microchip products in a manner outside the operating specifications contained in Microchip’s Data Sheets. Most likely, the person doing so is engaged in theft of intellectual property.

• Microchip is willing to work with the customer who is concerned about the integrity of their code.

• Neither Microchip nor any other semiconductor manufacturer can guarantee the security of their code. Code protection does not mean that we are guaranteeing the product as “unbreakable.”

Code protection is constantly evolving. We at Microchip are committed to continuously improving the code protection features of ourproducts. Attempts to break Microchip’s code protection feature may be a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If such actsallow unauthorized access to your software or other copyrighted work, you may have a right to sue for relief under that Act.
