Challenges

PovertyMillions live in extreme poverty. One of the main challenges is to lift more people out of poverty are secure energy access
Urbanization Earthquake hazard and risk. We live closer to each other, and we build more floors. However, the changing climate will be a challenge in the future cities.
Conflicts mountingWe live in a world in which we are divided into alliances. In addition, many countries have nuclear weapons. Monitoring these weapons, and intercept with countries trying to make these weapons are important.
Climate changeThis may be the greatest challenge of our time. We can see more extreme weather and the temperature is rising. Monitoring these changes is important today, and will be even more important in the future.
Safe society• Nuclear monitoring• Rock slopes• Hazard and risk models
Business areas
NORSAR is responsible for operating some of the world’s most advanced monitoring installations for observing earthquakes and nuclear explosions. We take our business further …

Conflicts mounting
NORSAR provides advice to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
• Monitor and verify events ofconcern.
• Advice on technical issuesrelated to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
• Operate the Norwegian stations
• Cooperate with other States Signatories
Part of an International Monitoring SystemTechnologies in use by NORSAR
• Seismological monitoring• Listening to the Earth’s movements,
natural as well as man-made, to detect both surface and underground explosions
• Infrasound monitoring• Detects explosions in the atmosphere
• Radionuclide monitoring• Detects airborne radioactivity (particles
and gases)
Climate change
Our aim is to contribute to improved long term weather forecasts and understanding of atmospheric phenomena
Infrasound may help!

NORSAR is an innovatorInfrasound for weather and climate• Aim:
– be leading R&D unit to use infrasound to better understand and model middle atmosphere
– Input to climate models– Constrain predictions of medium- to long
term weather forecasts• How:
– investment in people, re-use of modelling competencies and an international advisory board

Wilder – wetter – warmer at home too
• Increased risk of unstable rock slopes
• Important monitoring– Tsunami or earthquake risk
• Cooperation with NVE

Survey Planning
• Simulate full 3D seismic surveys(Marine streamer / Coil / Land / OBS / VSP)
• Map all offset azimuth combinations
Illumination Studies
• Advanced illumination maps
• Simulated Migration Amplitude functionality
PSDM travel times
• Calculate multi-arrival travel times and amplitudes
NORSAR-3D applications
Microseismic research – basis for monitoring
Generic technology to analyze and interpret microseismic movements in the Earth; induced by humans and natural
– Mining– Rock slides– Subsurface storage– Fracking for oil and gas– Environmental impact– Deep geothermal energy
