Commissioner’s Message

Continuing from the excitement of the 100th

Anniversary of Guiding in 2010,we launched into 2011 looking forward to a year of exciting adventures.Halfway through the year, I moved from being a District Commissioner toyour new Area Commissioner. With the support of all the members of AreaCouncil and our Guiders, I survived! Shortly before writing this message, Iasked my Area Council to submit some highlights from this year. I wasamazed by how much we accomplished and found it very challenging to fit itall onto this page.

A major highlight of this year was SOAR (Spirit of Adventure Rendez-vous),our Provincial Camp of epic proportions. This week-long camp was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for girls and Guiders alike. This year, SOAR washeld in Agassiz. We had 23 patrols attend from West Coast Area along withdozens of adult members volunteering as core staff. Our camping committeeoffered great support for our SOAR patrols, organizing two practice camps, coordinating transportation for all the girls and their gear, and answeringnumerous questions from participants.

In August, Guiders and girls plunged into a week of marine-themed activitiesat our second annual Area camp, Holidaze Deep Sea Adventures, hosted atCamp Olave. Throughout the year, our Districts held a number of camps withthemes like Abra-camp-dabra, West Point Grey goes to Hogwarts, SparksGo Wild at the Palace, Space Adventure, Western, and Festivals of theWorld. Our members thoroughly enjoyed our Area’s camping facilities, fromDistrict Camps at Camp Olave to advancement ceremonies at WoodwardsLanding, and a Guider Getaway at Hollyburn Chalet.

Besides all this camping, we have been bringing Guiding all over thecommunity. This summer, we attended the Vancouver Pride Festival, one ofthe largest community festivals in the Lower Mainland. Our Districtsparticipated in community events such as Everett Crowley Days, ChamplainCommunity Fair, Marpole Days, YMCA Healthy Kids Day, Hats off Day,Earth Day Parade, Chinese New Year Parade, Vancouver Sun Run, andRemembrance Day ceremonies.

Service is also a very important part of Guiding, and our Districtsenthusiastically participated in numerous service projects including treeplanting in Queens Park, making Christmas stockings for children, supporting soup kitchens, running a penny drive for the Canadian WorldFriendship Fund, environmental clean-ups at Foreshore Park and RenfrewRavine, filling Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, and collectingdonations for womens’ shelters.

Our Guiders and girls were recognized for their accomplishments at the AreaAwards Dinner, Celebration of Achievement, and numerous District events. In addition, 11 bursaries were awarded to members from Brownies to adultmembers.

With the multiple transitions of Commissioners and Advisers, this year hascertainly been a year of change. Thank you to Donna and Angela for theirdedicated service to West Coast Area. They have been instrumental inkeeping this Area running through transitions and amalgamations. I lookforward to the journey ahead as Area Commissioner.

Thanks for a fabulous year!

Richmond Guide HouseGail Rawle, Richmond Guide House ChairThe House in the 16th year of operation and stillcontinues to be booked on most weekendssometime by two user groups and a unit on aSunday night. We have Districts and unit meetingsregularly scheduled as well. The House waspainted throughout the inside this past year. Wealso replaced the couch in the Living Room thanksto the Legends Trefoil and the old blue chairs usedfor "everything" were moved out and updated withgrey ones. The old shop area has allowed us moresleeping space and that has been popular, particularly for the Leaders. We have found withour expanded Area that more leaders and girlshave become aware of this great location.

Woodwards Landing CampsiteGaile Rawle, Woodwards Landing ChairOver the past year we have been working on thesite. We have, compliments of the City ofRichmond, new and much needed picnic tablesthat can be moved around. We had anothersuccessful year with bookings. This site is used byGuiding primarily, but Scouting and other outsidegroups, including City of Richmond locations havebeen making good use of the camp site. It is agreat place to head out to with minimal expense, close to all amenities and great hiking on the dike.We feel quite lucky to have such a great greenspace within Richmond that our whole Area andoutside Areas can access.
