Puako Community Fuelbreak

HWMO sponsored this 3 mile long fuelbreak that protects the entire shoreline community of Puako that is adjacent to densely vegetated, mesquite (kiawe) forestland.

La’i ‘Opua Community Fuelbreak

HWMO collaborated with Hawaii Forest Industry Association and communities alongside La’i ‘Opua Preserve in Kona to create a fuelbreak that acts as a buffer zone

between those communities and the preserve. Completion of the fuelbreak was made possible thanks to substantial youth and volunteer involvement and workdays.

Waikoloa Dry Forest Fuelbreak

HWMO used WUI funds (which were matched by Forest Stewardship funds) to complete a perimeter fuelbreak around the highest density area of endangered plants on the Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative preserve.

Volcano Community Fire Fuels Reduction Day

HWMO met with the Volcano Community to organize an HWMO-sponsored fire-fuels reduction effort. In Hawaii, fire fuels and green waste are often disposed of incorrectly, so through a series of public education and action days, HWMO was able to not only raise awareness, but also spur community action. Community members came out in full force to reduce fire fuels around their homes. HWMO coordinated with a local chipper to drive down the street and mulch snags and treefall free of charge to the residents in exchange for volunteer in-kind match.
