DEGREE STRUCTURES

THERE ARE FIVE UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES availablethrough the Management Programme. This gives you the option to choose the right qualification for your academic and career objectives.

The following pages explain the subject areas that are included ineach degree pathway, which will make it easy to choose the rightpath for you. All of the degrees include a number of mandatory modules which must be studied, and some degrees give you theopportunity to choose from a range of elective modules.

Most subject areas contain two synoptically-linked modules whichtogether are worth 30 credits. Students study both of these linkedmodules and sit one final exam (which covers both modules). For example, the Stage 1 ‘Accounting’ subject area includes two

modules called ‘Introduction to Accounting 1’ and ‘Introduction toAccounting 2’.

A few of the subject areas contain only one module worth 15 credits. These stand-alone modules are indicated by the * symbol. Examplesof these modules are ‘Consumer Behaviour’, ‘Employment Law’ and‘Taxation’. Students sit one final exam at the end of each stand-alonemodule.

To graduate with a degree students need to achieve 360 credits. For full details of the modules, degree progression routes and award requirements please see our website at www.sml.hw.ac.uk/external .

It should be noted that the availability of electives will vary betweenlearning partners.

I chose to study the Management Programme because...I appreciated the flexible study mode the Management Programmeoffered.

Why did you choose the BBA degree?I wanted to obtain a high quality academic qualification as a supplement to my professional qualification.

What did you enjoy most about studying on the Heriot-WattManagement Programme?Asking and discussing questions with the tutors. Through the interactive class, I was always able to work out things that puzzledme before then!

The one piece of advice you would give to others thinkingabout the Management Programme is…You need to equip yourself with good academic and professionalqualifications which are related to your career and career prospects, and the Management Programme allows you the flexibility to do this.It gives you real knowledge that is useful to your career life.

How has the Management Programme helped your career? It has helped me achieve the continuous professional development I wanted to be able to progress in my career.

Name Kiranjeet Kaur

Institution ITD, MalaysiaDegree BA in Accountancy and FinanceType of study Part timeYear of graduation 2008Current job Corporate Auditor

I chose to study the Management Programme because…The Management Programme was recommended to me by a friendand I chose it because it is a well recognised University and theexam-based assessments suited me.

Why did you choose the BA in Accountancy and Financedegree?I recently moved from a different profession to Accountancy so theBA in Accountancy and Finance degree has provided me with thebackground knowledge and qualification that I required.

What did you enjoy most about studying on theManagement Programme?I liked the modular structure and the fact that it is not necessary to study other materials. I also prefer the 100% exam structure as I studied whilst working, and did not have much time for assignments.

How has the Management Programme helped your career? It has given me the qualification I need for my current job, as well asthe option to further my studies into a professional course now that Ihave gained my degree.

The one piece of advice you’d give to others thinking aboutthe Management Programme is…It is really helpful to mind-map / make notes of the module materials especially for the important chapters earlier in the semester. Thisway, its easier to understand the flow and important concepts of thesubjects. Studying the entire module when nearing the exam isnever a good idea!

Name Agatha Temba

Institution West London College, UKDegree BA in Business and FinanceType of study Full-timeYear of graduation 2009Current job Full Time Mother

I chose to study the Management Programme because...I liked the curriculum, the flexibility, the reputation of Heriot-WattUniversity, as well as the affordable fees.

Why did you choose the BA in Business and Finance degree?I am very business oriented and believe this degree will help boostmy entrepreneurial skills and pave the way for self employment.

What did you enjoy most about studying on theManagement Programme? All of it! I had a wonderful time and I would do it all over again if Ihad to. The programme is challenging but rewarding if one is hungryfor success and really goes for it. I made lots of friends and will keepin touch with them all for years to come.

How has the Management Programme helped your career?I worked as a banker before and struggled a lot to understand thebenefit/results of a number of business decisions that were made. Ifelt very inadequate and was constantly low in confidence andmorale. Completing the BA in Business and Finance degree has notonly addressed my earlier inadequacies but has also put me in amore competitive position for the job market.

The one piece of advice you’d give to others thinking aboutthe Management Programme is…Do it. Remain focused and work hard towards your goal. Attend lectures regularly and participate in class discussions, ask questions, respond to questions and don’t be afraid to get it wrong. Do not waituntil the last minute to read, because although you may pass the examination, you’ll be low on the knowledge necessary for practicalapplication.

HWMP FOCUS ON THE CARIBBEAN

FOCUS ON THE CARIBBEAN

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE CARIBBEAN what comes tomind? For many people it might be tropical beaches, BobMarley, Calypso and Carnival. But the Caribbean, comprisingmore than 7,000 islands and 73.5 million people has a diverseand vibrant heritage with much more to offer than the ‘beach holiday’ stereotype might suggest.

The School of Management and Languages has been working withLearning Partners in the Caribbean since 2002 and it is a key strategic region for the Heriot-Watt Management Programme. Wecurrently deliver courses in Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica wherethere is a huge demand from busy professionals already working indynamic business environments for a flexible and relevant qualification to help them progress their career.

Page 15: HWMP Magazine

DANIEL SURNAME, a final year BA Business and Finance studentfeels that the course has already improved his career prospects andsays that

“the course has increased my knowledge and improved my marketability. During my second year I managed to gain a position in one of the leading telecommunication companies in the Caribbean”

B&B University College tutor Judith Haldane teaches HumanResource Management modules and also feels that the courses aredirectly relevant to business , she says that:

“it involves students in a deeper, richer, more meaningful activity of researching, analysing and applying it to the ‘real world’.

Mr Peter Barrett (Programme Manager at B&B University College)credits the success of the programme in Jamaica to the fact that itmeets the three key demands from students: flexibility; access tohigh quality study materials and the exemption options availablewhich allow students with previous qualifications to achieve theirdegree even quicker. Whilst the Management Programme hasalready had an impact, B&B have ambitious plans to expand theirdegree course delivery and have set their sights on dominating thebusiness professional market in Jamaica.

NEKIESHA HARVEYHeriot-Watt Student Ambassador, current student

I chose the Heriot-Watt BA in Business and Finance Programmethrough BBUC for its convenience, both in location and timing. I am easily able to fit the classes into a very busy work schedule.

The programme is not only ‘top notch’ academically, but also highly relevant to today’s business world chal-lenges-

it helps prepare young professionals like myself for the business environment through a relevant curriculum, materials, experienced teaching staff and uncompromising learning environment.

The School of Higher Education has been a learning partner ofHeriot-Watt University since 2002. 162 students have graduated with degrees and, with their students consistentlyachieving excellent exam performances, they are a recognisedname in business education.

Jamili Richards

The School of Higher Education offers a high quality learningexperience by delivering a smooth progression route for students through their diploma courses and directly onto the Management Programme. A key benefit for students is thattheir diploma courses may make them eligible for exemptions, this enables them to achieve their UK degree in a shorter period than is possible elsewhere.

Jamili Richards studied in San Juan and graduated in June2009 with a BA in Management with Distinction. This is a significant achievement as Distinctions are only awarded tothose few students who perform with academic excellencethroughout their studies.

Jamili chose the course because it was directly releated to hercareer in administration:

“When I compared it to other programmes it covered relevant topics and gave an insight into different areas of the company as I aim to work at management level I knewthat this broad scope would assist me.”

Ivan Thomas

BA Accountancy and Finance, San Fernando, 2008 graduate

“I recommend the Management Programme because the information is relevant to today’s business world. All of the subjects were useful for my job and I’ve had the opportunity to put everything I learned into practice.Of all my accomplishments so far this is the one that tops them all. I’ve always dreamed of obtaining a tertiary education and I’m happy I did it when I did. It has made a positive change in my life and I’m excited to take my career to the next level.”
