ABOUT THEMANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

FOUNDED IN 1998, the Management Programme aims to help youfulfil your potential and reach your career goals. We currently haveover 2,000 students studying on the Management Programme, withexams held in over 35 countries worldwide. In June 2009, we celebrated our 1000th degree graduate at the award ceremony inEdinburgh.

Flexible Study OptionsOur courses are designed so that you can study, sit exams andachieve a UK degree in your own country. The degrees offer a highlyflexible method of supported student learning covering core management subjects. They are there to meet your needs and deliveron academic quality and the demands of modern global business.

MATERIALS AND ASSESSMENTSThe study materials which you will use have been written by academic staff from the School of Management and Languages(Heriot-Watt University) and contain everything you need to preparefor and pass your exams. The exam questions are also set andmarked by the University so the quality of your degree is guaranteed.

RECOGNITION OF PREVIOUS STUDIESManagement Programme students come from diverse backgroundsand we understand that many of you may already have a businessqualification. We review all applications on a case by case basis andif you do have a relevant qualification we may be able to offer youexemptions from certain subject areas – this means that you couldachieve your degree even faster!

DEGREE STRUCTURES

THERE ARE FIVE UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES availablethrough the Management Programme. This gives you the option to choose the right qualification for your academic and career objectives.

The following pages explain the subject areas that are included ineach degree pathway, which will make it easy to choose the rightpath for you. All of the degrees include a number of mandatory modules which must be studied, and some degrees give you theopportunity to choose from a range of elective modules.

Most subject areas contain two synoptically-linked modules whichtogether are worth 30 credits. Students study both of these linkedmodules and sit one final exam (which covers both modules). For example, the Stage 1 ‘Accounting’ subject area includes two

modules called ‘Introduction to Accounting 1’ and ‘Introduction toAccounting 2’.

A few of the subject areas contain only one module worth 15 credits.These stand-alone modules are indicated by the * symbol. Examplesof these modules are ‘Consumer Behaviour’, ‘Employment Law’ and‘Taxation’. Students sit one final exam at the end of each stand-alonemodule.

To graduate with a degree students need to achieve 360 credits. For full details of the modules, degree progression routes and award requirements please see our website at www.sml.hw.ac.uk/external .

It should be noted that the availability of electives will vary betweenlearning partners.

The one piece of advice you’d give to others thinking aboutthe Management Programme is…It is really helpful to mind-map / make notes of the module materials especially for the important chapters earlier in the semester. Thisway, its easier to understand the flow and important concepts of thesubjects. Studying the entire module when nearing the exam isnever a good idea!

How has the Management Programme helped your career?I worked as a banker before and struggled a lot to understand thebenefit/results of a number of business decisions that were made. Ifelt very inadequate and was constantly low in confidence andmorale. Completing the BA in Business and Finance degree has notonly addressed my earlier inadequacies but has also put me in amore competitive position for the job market.

The one piece of advice you’d give to others thinking aboutthe Management Programme is…Do it. Remain focused and work hard towards your goal. Attend lectures regularly and participate in class discussions, ask questions,respond to questions and don’t be afraid to get it wrong. Do not waituntil the last minute to read, because although you may pass the examination, you’ll be low on the knowledge necessary for practicalapplication.

FOCUS ON THE CARIBBEAN

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE CARIBBEAN what comes tomind? For many people it might be tropical beaches, BobMarley, Calypso and Carnival. But the Caribbean, comprisingmore than 7,000 islands and 73.5 million people has a diverseand vibrant heritage with much more to offer than the ‘beach holiday’ stereotype might suggest.

The School of Management and Languages has been working withLearning Partners in the Caribbean since 2002 and it is a key strategic region for the Heriot-Watt Management Programme. Wecurrently deliver courses in Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica wherethere is a huge demand from busy professionals already working indynamic business environments for a flexible and relevant qualification to help them progress their career.

DANIEL SURNAME, a final year BA Business and Finance studentfeels that the course has already improved his career prospects andsays that

“the course has increased my knowledge and improved my marketability. During my second year I managed to gain a position in one of the leading telecommunication companies in the Caribbean”

B&B University College tutor Judith Haldane teaches HumanResource Management modules and also feels that the courses aredirectly relevant to business , she says that:

“it involves students in a deeper, richer, more meaningful activity of researching, analysing and applying it to the ‘real world’.

Mr Peter Barrett (Programme Manager at B&B University College)credits the success of the programme in Jamaica to the fact that itmeets the three key demands from students: flexibility; access tohigh quality study materials and the exemption options availablewhich allow students with previous qualifications to achieve theirdegree even quicker. The School of Higher Education offers a high quality learningexperience by delivering a smooth progression route for students through their diploma courses and directly onto the Management Programme.
