Overview and ObjectivesThe objective of this course is to introduce the practicing surgeon to office-based ultrasound examination of the thyroid, parathyroid, and neck for commonly encountered diseases. The distinction of normal from malignant lymphadenopathy is emphasized with a demonstration of the comprehensive examination of lymph node basins in cervical levels I-VI. The technique of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) of thyroid nodules and lymph nodes are addressed in didactic lecture format.

In addition, hands-on skill sessions allow the surgeon to develop techniques to perform diagnostic neck ultrasound. The use of standardized patients allows supervised hands-on experience with transverse and longitudinal ultrasound methods. The techniques of FNA of lesions will be performed using phantom models. Attendees will be instructed in the practical detail and hurdles in developing office-based ultrasound.

OBJECTIVES After completion of this course, the surgeon should be able to: • Summarize general physics and principles of head/neck ultrasound; • Describe the indications and goals for diagnostic head/neck ultrasound; • Demonstrate the technique for performance of a diagnostic head/neck ultrasound; • Recognize the normal sonographic anatomy of the head/neck;

Educational ObjectivesIncrease surgical competence to be able to expand surgical skills; specifically to evaluate when open and closed rhinoplasty can be used. Assess, identify and perform the latest techniques in the management of laryngeal diseases and disorders of speech. Increase competence with respect to managing complex sinonasal disorders and expand and develop surgical techniques for performing paranasal sinus surgery. Increase surgical competence to be able to expand surgical skills, specifically to determine when open and closed rhinoplasty techniques are appropriate.
