Introduction to Hydel power
Energy in the form of electricity is now one of the basic necessities of life.
Though deficiency in oil and gas, Pakistan has abundant water and other energy sources like Hydel power, coal and solar power.
Hydel power provides about 34 percent of the renewable energy in Pakistan.
![Page 3: Hydel power](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062405/5566800ed8b42a0f168b4c2d/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Why To Use Hydel Power As a Form Of Energy
Hydroelectric power plants do not use up resources to create electricity nor do
they pollute the air Land water as other power plants may.
![Page 4: Hydel power](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062405/5566800ed8b42a0f168b4c2d/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
No Fuel is required to run the plant No air-pollution is created Has a longer life No change in efficiency with the age Hydraulic turbines can be started
speedily Cost of power per unit is very less

How Hydel power plants work?
![Page 9: Hydel power](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062405/5566800ed8b42a0f168b4c2d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Water, when it is falling by the force of gravity, can be used to turn turbines and generators that produce electricity.
When the electricity is generated from the power plant it is transmitted by power lines or cables to the homes.

Elements of a Hydropower Plant
Reservoir-this is where water is stored for use as needed.
Water Turbine-used to convert hydraulic energy of flowing water into rotational mechanical energy.
Penstock-is a conduit which carries water into the turbines.
Generator-it is used to convert rotational mechanical energy into electrical energy

Tarbela Dam/Quick Facts and Figures
It’s build on Indus at Bara near village Tarbela.
It’s the world largest earth filled dam. The dam was completed in 1976 at a
cost of Rs.18.5 billion. It’s 143 km high and a reservoir area of
243 square km. With a storage capacity of 119 billion
cubic meters of water.

Mangla Dam/Quick Facts and Figures
It’s located on the River Jhelum. It’s one of the longest earth filled dam
in the world. The main structures of the dam include
4 embankment, 2 spillways, 5 power irrigation tunnels and a 1,000 MW power station.
It’s a multipurpose project to control flood water and generate HEP.
